Way, way too early to give up a 25yo athlete like Rosario who can do it all but needs time to develop. He will always be a bit of a bad ball hitter, but some guys just are. He will never be a great OB guy, but will probably normalize above .300 somewhere. He plays great defense, has power, has speed, seems to have solid instincts and is still learning. To me he has the whole season. Granite is a nice looking player but isn't ready yet, IMO. I think Wade could be very good and I'm liking various comparisons to Matt Lawton as a player. He also is not ready. Rosario should get the whole season to show what he can do and what he may become. Inconsistencies from such a talented young player are something you are patient with.

Will Hunter Greene Haunt The Twins?
DocBauer replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Said it before but I think it bears repeating: IMO, when there isn't that ONE GUY that is a no-brainer,I believe you pick the guy with the highest ceiling that ALSO seems the safest choice. There is just no way to know who is going to wash out, who is going to make it or who is going to be a star 4 or 5 years from now. But please, please, when that time comes, can we refrain from the "we should have drafted" talk?- 89 replies

Big fan and believer in Max. Not disregarding Sano or any other player on the roster, but I think he may end up being the Twins most complete player when you factor in every category. I know that's saying a lot, but it appears he will hit, make contact, get OB, hit for power, steal some bases, play great defense, etc. And I too believe he will figure out lefties in time.

Trust The Process And The Stats
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fantastic write up! The contract is what it is and has never bothered me. Nor has Mauer himself, always been a fan. I think the issue has just been disappoinment in his decline. Exoected due to age and injury and the such, but still disappointing. I don't think anyone expects him to hit for the remainder if the season the way he has in May. But with his defense, solid IN, some doubles power and a solid BA, he's still a very useful player. Just one who shouldn't probably play every day any longer, and I think everyone agrees with this. He has been an all time great Twin, and she should be remembered that way, absolutely!- 75 replies

Wait and see. This is fun, interesting, and this is a nice looking young team, regardless of ultimate finish. The lineup, again, mostly young, is playing fine defense and growing offensively. There is a real chance the rotation will include Santana, Santiago, Berrios and Mejia for the bulk of the season: one older vet, one younger vet and a pair of talented youngsters. The 5th spot is a question mark, but no need to panic just yet. See if Gibson can get it together and just be solid. Maybe Hughes is solid after rest. Maybe by then someone is ready for a shot. We can't forget this is STILL a rebuilding, budding team with bullpen help coming soon and some solid prospects coming soon. Unless you can steal someone, or make a prospect trade that isn't steep and can bring you someone you can hold on to and count for at least a few years (doubtful) roll with what you have and fill in the 5th spot the best you can.
-
Reports coming out say biceps tendonitis. Meaning what? Who knows. But could mean some rest and rehab and he will look like his first few games and not the past few. That would help. Depth is looking scary. But today, right now, there isn't a panic and there shouldn't be. Now, if injuries hit, we could be looking at Duffey, maybe Haley and others. But it's not panic time just yet.
-
Romero and Gonsalvez may not be ready, but it sure seems the potential is there. Slegers has looked good, for the most part, but inconsistency for a young pitcher seeing AAA for the first time is not unexpected. Berrios and Mejia could be fixtures for the remainder of the season. The team also has the finances to make a FA signing in the off-season. Despite such a fun and good start to the season, this remains a mostly young and rebuilding team. I wouldn't make a trade at this time.
-
Adrianza has the glove, had a nice ST, had a nice milb rehab, and has looked good so far. But we still don't know if he can hit ML pitching with consistency. For the most part, Escobar has proven he can, and is a quality glove man. The whole roster is getting to play, and is largely contributing. At the moment, there are no obvious deficiencies offensively or defensively, and no-one screaming they are ready to come up and do better with the exception of Garver. Not a knock on prospects, just a today reality. Why would we trade Escobar?
-
My 2 cents...which echoes a lot already said: Vargas has looked solid at 1B this season, if not fine. SSS maybe, but he's not deficient. He has proven in the past to hit well RH. But if he is ultimately better from the LH side, that's not a bad thing. He will SO on occasion but is not immune to BB. He has an idea at the plate and has big power. Past history indicates he can and should hit better from the TH than he is so far this season. I don't object to a gut feeling to OH for anyone. But let him play and grow! You might have something Here! Lastly, between OF, DH and 1B, there is plenty of room for Grossman, Vargas and Mayer to all play most days. This shouldn't be an issue, much less a problem
-
IF...and it's kind of a big IF...the Twins give Mejia a shot and are patient with him, we could have a couple nice rookies in the rotation this season. That would also give us a 5 man rotation with Gibson in reserve. (Theoretically) While Duffey's ST performance and some past success offers encouragement as a SP, I don't know that we are in a "must" situation at this time with the young Mejia and "getittogether" Gibson available. I'd keep him on the pen where he is successful Now, an injury or two can change this situation, especially if a young bullpen arm or two is ready soon.
-
Gonsalves may not be happy with his start, but I sure am. Seems like he mostly avoided hard contact, the HR being an obvious exception. His own description of his start accounts for the "pitchability" factor that has often been mentioned regarding him. Very excited to see how the season plays out for him. Surprised by both Murray and Cederoth. Isn't it time for Burdi to move to AAA and Clay move up to take his spot at AA?

Lewis Thorpe's Return To The Mound
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Despite young and at least a few years away, we all fell in love a bit with Thorpe as a very talented young SP in the system, a LH even, who might bring promise to performance at the ML level. But his injury, and illness, IMO, has taken his adventure to a different level for most of us. It's one thing to root for a prospect. It's another thing to wonder and worry about a prospect as a real human person having to endure and overcome. I'm really pulling for this young man as a Twins fan and for him to fulfill his early promise. But I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say I'm just pulling for him as a young man to overcome.- 23 replies

I've seen a few questionable moves to be sure, but I think Paul has used the pen much more effectively this season. I like Kintzler in his role. He's taken it, run with it, and even shown some signs of improvement. Duffey has largely been good to solid overall. Rogers has done about everything asked of him. But no question Pressly getting straightened out is HUGE. Even if Burro or Chargois came up tomorrow throwing bullets, having him and Pressly creates a much better pen. I like where we're headed...but we do need a couple re-inforcements

Keith Law On The Twins And The 2017 Draft
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know Law's 30% potential comment on Greene is not real math, but an off the cuff statement. And if the Twins go that route, I'd be happy, root for the kid and hope like he'll. But when look at build, stuff, high floor, projectable ceiling, proximity to the majors, I just thing Wright us the correct choice here.- 78 replies

Regression For Twins Is Likely, But Not Inevitable
DocBauer replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, there will be some regression on the mound and the pen needs fortification. But I agree there is also hope there to balance out regression and provide greater depth in the rotation and the pen. Imagine the lineup as Rosario, Buxton and Kepler continue to grow and develop, along with Polanco, and Rosier kicks it up a notch. Oh, and I forgot to include Vargas! The offense should continue to grow and improve over the season, and that also can stave off regression. Barring injuries or implosion from the rotation, I still think this is a .500 club or a few games over.- 33 replies

Too bad his late start, pitching up north and his college of choice couldn't have him slide down to the Twins second selection. -
Keith Law On The Twins Minor Leagues
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Another great read! Only regret is it want longer and more detailed. I find his comment on Jay to be especially interesting. I get the idea of moving him to the pen to excel, and to do so quickly. But with Rogers there, Melotakis such a strong contender there, and Rosario possibly as good or better, I'd still like to see Jay starting, developing, and maybe filling out a couple of pounds for endurance sake if nothing else. I think moving him to the pen this soon is a mistake.- 14 replies

Keith Law On Derek Falvey And The 2017 Twins
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
100%! Absolutely no reason Grossman can't see a few games here and there to give guys a day off against a LH starter. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to sit Kepler or Rosario. They are both talented, dynamic, athletic young players with big upsides. Let them play! Daily! I LOVE Rosario and his potential. He will never be a disciplined hitter, but his defense is excellent. He offers hitting, power and speed. He seems to love the game and shows instincts. He just needs to calm himself down a bit. It's heady company, but I've read comparisons to Oliva and Puckett. And the comparisons are apt, if premature. But I like Kepler even more. The entire skill set is there to develop. Next to Sano, he may be the most complete hitter in the entire lineup...potentially. Buxton is even more athleticly gifted, and may prove to ultimately prove to be more dynamic, but Kepler may prove to be the better pure hitter and OB guy. I could easily see him as the future #3 hitter allowing Sano to hit cleanup.- 30 replies

Keith Law On Derek Falvey And The 2017 Twins
DocBauer replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This was a very interesting read. Thank you for sharing with us! I can't disagree with Law's assertion that the Twins "losing" would be fine if they were playing the right guys for the future. Of course, I want to be greedy and I want to win AND play the right guys! Lol For the most part, I think they are doing that however. Right now, the only questionable area of playing time is Mauer maybe playing too much, and I'd still like to see Garver up and Giminez moved. That's not a knock on Giminez who has been a solid signing. But sooner or later, the younger, talented, and better offensive player in Garver needs and deserves his shot. Pitching is a different story, but injury has clouded that situation somewhat. Rotationally speaking, I thought the team had the numbers until May got hurt, Gibson imploded and Duffey went to the pen. (Though the Duffey move was probably smart). I really hope Mejia gets his shot and the team sticks with him. Injuries last season, and this season, have hindered the presence and advancement of Chargois, Burdi, Melotakis and Jay. But it's only May 17th, and I believe both Burdi and Melotakis are about to be promoted. Then, it's getting Chargois and Jay healthy and on the hill. At least a couple of these guys should be slinging it for the Twins in the second half.- 30 replies

Gordon Commanding Spotlight Among Twins Prospects
DocBauer commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
At some point yes, but I'm not sure I'd be in a hurry to move Sank off third anytime soon. He's playing good to great defense with that cannon of an arm. Finding a solid 1B with offense is a lot easier than finding a quality 3B with Sano's offense. However, if we do indeed end up with a roster crunch, it could make sense to move him to 1B simply to get another fine player in the lineup. -
Finding A Jolt For The Bullpen
DocBauer replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like this and agree. The injury to Chargois has hurt, or he'd already be up. (Or would have already been here but for a disappointing ST). Previous injuries to Burdi, Melotakis and Jay have also slowed movement, and possibly dented FO hopes and plans. But still mid May, the plans are not ruined by any means. Burdi and Melotakis need to be up to Rochester soon. June 1st target date? Fine. Get it done. Let them get that experience and confidence, and then get them up. A healthy Chargois the same. There is still a lot of time, and I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 of them, if not all 3, by July sometime. Though, barring injury, I'm still not certain who goes. I don't see Kintzler moved and someone just plugged in to his role, especially if the team is winning and p,saying competitive ball. Haley is a rule 5. Pressly has stuff, potential, and has been quite solid previously. Duffey is excelling in his role. Rogers is getting better and better. So...does that leave Breslow and Belisle to be moved? It would appear so, even though neither has performed poorly. And that's a good thing as perhaps they can can provide trade value to some degree.- 45 replies

The problem is trying to define what an ACE pitcher really is. Just reading all the well thought out comments here is proff of that. There is a difference, IMO, between a #1 starter and an ACE, though an ACE is obviously a #1 starter. A true ACE is that #1 starter who does his job...being a dominant SP overall...consistently. He doesn't have to win 20 every year for goodness sake, but you know he's capable of it. Along with 30+ starts and 200IP, etc. You get the idea. Transport of the old adage where you know it/him when you see it/him. Santana is, and has been, a largely successful and reliable pitcher for his career. You could argue, for whatever reason(s), he's never been better in his career, overall, than since he joined the Twins. He's a high quality #3 who has often pitched like a quality #2. I think you could make the argument he's been a true #2 since joining the Twins. Right now, and even for a 100 loss team last season, an argument could be made he's pitched like a #1. Not an ACE, but a real #1. What matters most is this is a FA move that paid off for us. And I love the way the Twins have been using him, putting him out there, but also not riding him too hard.
