  1. May be true, but this is starting to feel like "2013 Reunion Tour: The Sequel" as we've already brought Eddie G on board, and now we're going after Torii. Why not look forward instead!
  2. when you say "most everyone" I think you are saying that the Twins will pursue JM but that other teams will pursue him harder. To some degree I think the Twins (or at least Ryan) are invested in letting May, Meyer & Milone compete for the final two rotation spots. If it's just those three (possibly Pelf is a fourth -- *groan*) then I would be happy seeing how that plays out, without Masterson in the mix.
  3. The job also comes with a 162-game season ticket package, dugout seats, from what I hear.
  4. Doc, I thought for sure your prescription would be... more cowbell. I agree with your big picture though have minor quibbles. I think the rotation is just a baby elephant at this point. Nolasco will bounce back (it's winter, we can be optimistic). Suzuki swears by Milone and caught him in Oakland. Meyer is ready. (How can he not be?) Hughes can't pitch as well next year but can still be good. The lineup could go many directions from now until mid summer. So many question marks. It could be top 5 again (doubt it) or it could lose last year's mojo, but at worst it should still be a couple spots within league median. Parmelee won't be back. He made too many blunders on the basepaths and his 1B skills are redundant with Vargas now. I think shaking up the coaching staff was like shaking up a snow globe. We'll see most of the same flakes as last year, but they'll be in different places with a bit more buzz and energy when the season starts.
  5. To me, Masterson looks like a slightly above mediocre, pitch to contact guy, with horrible numbers against Detroit and KC, and who is heading towards the wrong side of age 30. Oh-- and whose best pitch is a sinkerball that breaks upward. /trolling I spent all summer complaining about Meyer and May not getting their chance, so I'm already locked in to my position. I think we have at least six guys competing for rotation spots already. But if the Twins pick him up, I'll get on board. I do grant that he has a nice pitch and some nice numbers against righties.
  6. Maybe not the most intuitive chart -- where the x and y axis cross, it looks like it's indicating the middle of the strike zone (with the bottom of the chart maybe representing the ground).
  7. The A's will need to trade for Terrance Gore to pinch run (but not attempt to steal) in the late innings...
  8. I'm with Levi. The best use of WAR is as a 3-5 year estimated value for position players -- and WAR is a good instrument for that, sure.
  9. Whatever. Using WAR to evaluate closers makes less sense than using Saves, K%, etc.
  10. In 2013 Perkins saved 36 games with 4 blown saves. Fangraphs assigned him WAR of 1.7. This tells us a replacement player or some other back end bullpen guy can save 30+ games for us, right?
  11. Absolutely. I went straight for the inside fold on 3C for Sid's "jottings"
  12. And that question remains time-honored.
  13. When does the salary bubble burst? a 13 year sports contract? Really? I'd actually be pissed if the Twins did anything remotely similar to that again. -just one opinion
  14. Ladies and gentlemen, the Minnesota Twins announce their new pitching coach.. Max Patkin!
  15. The Santana-to-SS might have to wait another year.
  16. I think the original graphic illustration might have had DR instead of VZ as birthplace
  17. Besides, I consider Glynn to be an outside hire. He's been everywhere but here until 3 years ago.
  18. Great hire. I'm betting and hoping Glynn had some contacts in Venezuela and that we finally see a couple of native Latin America guys hired now.
  19. I will let you interpret the defensive ratings, though playing LF last year we Schafer get to fly balls that no one had gotten to in years. Though I admit I did not see every game he played in. At the minimum I am pulling for Schafer to win a 4th outfielder role and regular late inning pinch runner and defensive replacement (Arcia).
  20. Jacque Jones had a good glove, otherwise after almost a decade of Kubel, Delmon and Willingham, I'm happy to give Schafer a shot out in left, provided he can get on base enough. I think the fielding needs to be considered in this case.
  21. People keep citing articles written by under-40, out of market, sportswriters to back their belief that no one should question Mauer's toughness. I sort of wish Mauer had been not mentioned in the original article. Other guys had more interesting injuries we could rehash: Pelfrey, Nolasco, Nunez, Colabello, Arcia, and so on. /highhorse
  22. But MLB is discussing mounting actual clocks, like basketball shot clocks, behind home plate and in the outfield. That's the clock that has absolutely no place in baseball.
  23. Doogie versus Wetmore, place your bets!!
  24. Congrats to Bruno he earned it. Believed by whom? I wish Wetmore would at least add the meaningless "according to a source" at the end of it!
  25. Topps could learn a thing or two from McDonald's about making gum that will last.
