  1. It's hard to keep a thread about Escobar on topic, without also talking about Santana. (Minor factual point: Escobar actually got a shot playing CF before Santana did.) I want Escobar to get another shot at SS in spring training. If the Twins commit to Santana at short, that's fine with me too. Some say that Polanco and Gordon can be future shortstops, so if Santana is needed in CF then we already know Escobar can play SS for an extended period. I like Escobar a lot. He has positive value for this team either as full time or utility.
  2. I had never heard of the Calcaterra guy. So, 15 minutes of my life wasted trying to figure out who he was. Not to my taste but that's just me. There was an inkling of merit to his argument in this case. I would highly dispute Calcaterra's rankings on the handsomeness of MLB managers, if I had the time. Heck maybe Seth and Thrylos and the rest regularly bump into him down in Ft Myers every spring. I would have no clue. Oh and how do you people have time to read every single baseball writer on the internet?
  3. No one knows more about the Twins organization and has finer insight than Craif Calcaterra.
  4. Or maybe Molitor was preferred over Lovullo and Douggie exactly because he won't need any hand holding. I don't remember there being this conversation when Gardy was hired-and anyway Gardy would've shot down the idea, let's say... colorfully
  5. Berardino is a good source but glad to hear that Ryan was involved after all.
  6. will you now please usher him out of it?
  7. Just a hobby of his. Something he does in his spare time.
  8. You got me - that one went 449 feet to left center. My point is I want to be surprised by some of the new coaches, as in a couple guys from Latin America or guys I've never heard of.
  9. A coaching staff with Bruno, Steiny, and Frankie V. would remind me a lot of a Kubel, Bartlett, Guerrier reunion.
  10. Yes-I'm just as curious about the makeup of the staff.
  11. Don't lose sight that Maddon, whatever his skills or lack thereof, was skipper of the team that was 66-96 one year and 97-win team and AL Pennant the next year. This is the NY-Boston division, not the central. Cubs can have him, though. He was never coming here. Just might have been nice to give him a call and hear what he had to say.
  12. If 3B coach had started windmilling the instant it slipped from LF hands, then Gordon would have been a bit further when the throw came in. Gordon started rubberneccking anyway. Bumgarner retiring Perez should have surprised no one. Sending Gordon would have been defendable and epic no matter what the result. So SEND HIM!
  13. Probably the first 5-inning save in World Series history
  14. Thanks for your thoughtful response. What is most bothersome is not that they didn't "seriously pursue" Maddon, it's that they didn't even call. Costs you $0 dollars and 30 seconds to pick up the phone! Maybe all parties knew Maddon wouldn't be a good fit, but call him anyway. Hear what their side has to say, then let your fans hear it from you, not them. Thirty seconds of your time. If not Ryan, someone else in the FO. Granted the timing wasn't great. This is not the behavior of a "do what it takes" organization. Yet apparently 15 other teams already with managers did call him.
  15. Pohlad: "I'm just trying to run a baseball team and feed my family at the same time." Ryan: "I've wanted Molitor to manage this team for 15 years, ain't backin' down now.." St. Peter: "If more of you stinkin' fans had come to more games, then maybe we would be in position to afford a guy like Maddon?" Jack Goin:
  16. Great topic. Small point to drock2190: I didn't read into the article that the Tampa-St Pete market has more fans, only that there are estimated more televisions turned on to Rays games last year than Twins games. In fact, I'd bet that "Twins Territory" covers more area and runs much more loyal than that other market, which is relatively new to the pro sports scene.
  17. Will the Rays be "frowned at" for announcing this on a World Series game day?
  18. This prediction never had a chance.
  19. In baseball terms, my memory is that Morneau had close to zero value. Sad as it is for me to say. So getting something for him and opening the position was by itself a win (or not a loss).
  20. I honestly think relative age is the ONLY thing Doug M. has in common with Kelly at this point. Also, what happened to Glynn????????
  21. I won't defend how utterly bad and negative some of his recent columns were getting, but between him and Sid, those guys are like the Forrest Gump of the Twin Cities sports scenes. If you can filter out the bias in some of Reusse's comments and columns, you can still learn a lot even if you can't stand the guy.
  22. Berardino does a great job and this is his offseason, but I ask tongue in cheek: So Molitor's interviews with Ryan are by text? Molitor came away encouraged, from where? The Freehouse brewery? The hotel pool? Does Meintkiewicz interview by text? Has he flown to the Twin Cities? Is Glynn suddenly out of the running because he coaches in Venezuela this time of year? Who is the hiring committee? Who gets the final call? How is Gardy doing? I understand that all the key players want to keep it close to the vest. It still wouldn't hurt to know a little more than the stuff we can already guess about.
  23. I think "roll with what we have" is the plan, has always been the plan, like it or not. Twins just haven't messaged it very well. I'm not as pessimistic as some will be (yet). There's a misconception that young players must necessarily lose games simply because they are young. I think the 2001-2002 teams averaged 25-26 years old. Maybe a new coaching staff can reassemble the parts to get more wins out of the players we already have, and keep some other guys performing above their heads.
