  1. ok, Braves fans excepted (and Red Sox fans of course) Otherwise it was hard to hate Torre and Zimmer, the young Jeter, Bernie Williams the classical guitarist, good guys Girardi and Tino Martinez, humble Mariano Rivera, so on. This was before the Clemens and A-Rod types came sniffing around. Those were some jolly good fellows on those late 90's teams.
  2. You can hate the Yankees, but it was really hard to hate those Yankee teams in the late 90's with Torre and those guys. Looks like MLB will get their big (baseball) market wish in the NL if maybe not the AL.
  3. I was thinking Joe Maddon might pull a Matt Williams and take Arrieta from the game due to some preconceived wisdom about pitch count or matchups or something, alas no luck.
  4. If Ryan signs a front line starting pitcher as you suggest he might, then what do you think the rotation would look like in 2016, then 2017?
  5. What did the Cubs do that Baltimore didn't? is what I'm wondering. A guy just doesn't suddenly flip a switch after he gets traded does he?
  6. It was definitely a struggle to get hits at the end. We now know Dozier wasn't at 100% unfortunately. I'm not ready to call out Bruno but I think all the coaches and data guys need to get their heads together and figure out the next step. When your batting average leaders are Eduardo Nunez and Oswaldo Arcia, you might have a problem!
  7. Sounds good to me. There needs to be some trades made and we need Ryan's very good scouting eye for that.
  8. Short term, Ryan needs to address the glut of corner infielder DH types. I don't know if guys like Josmil Pinto and Alex Meyer were never more than AAAA types or if we're just not able to get the best from them. I do believe it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy to say things like "we stuck him in AAA all year and he didn't produce, so I guess we will give him another year of AAA." Not everyone will respond positively to that sort of program. We already know Arcia can hit MLB pitching and we've seen guys like Valencia and Colabello leave the Twins and have varying degrees of success in platoon type roles.
  9. I stand corrected, in detail if not in spirit. I don't know how these baseball stories get so distorted!
  10. Hip injuries are ominous.
  11. I also read that Bud Black is the leading candidate, with Wakamatsu and Gardy also expected to get strong consideration. Apparently they will be looking externally, which is probably smart. Black was just fired from a team of veterans so I'm not sure what the media appeal is with him. I saw a story somewhere that Jason Werth went to check the starting lineup for the day. Werth's name wasn't on it. Werth tore the lineup off the wall and carried it into Williams office and stuck it in his face and said "what the f-- is this?" First of all, you gotta love a guy who wants to be in the lineup that bad. I don't know about Bud Black but a situation about a veterans playing time would never develop into that with Gardy. There would be expectations set and communication every day about it. And if that did happen, the player would lose that battle. I am pulling for Gardy.
  12. I hope this is exactly how the Twins are war gaming it. Kepler and Vargas are young and inexpensive options, without much of a drop off. Either one might be ready to play full time after another season under their belt. And keeping Plouffe around really complicates things in the infield, as reliable as he's been. He will turn 30 next season.
  13. The Twins should have a contingency for first base should Mauer not improve for a third year. Maybe Mauer can move to full time DH sometime in 2016 and that might be less taxing on him mentally. Just an idea.
  14. Ron Washington Ron Gardenhire (spring training)
  15. Instead of adding new laws, and what I think Republicans can get on board with, is rolling back the ridiculous laws we already have. Lawmakers need to show some spine and demand that these excess regulations are stricken from the books. It's a long road, multi-pronged approach, for sure. For example, what mike said upthread about laws prohibiting federal agencies from collecting data on gun violence specifically. And then the family in Colorado who lost their daughter in the theater shooting and is now on the hook for $200,000 in legal bills to the ammo seller. Loser pay laws specifically to protect this industry. That's embarrassing. There are probably many other laws that very few people know about. Get rid of them.
  16. You can criticize Gardenhire for some things but it's hard to criticize him for being old fashioned after seeing how 2015 played out. Since Gardy was canned, this organization has double-downed in old fashionedness, split pairs and triple-downed, in spades, all in, every card metaphor you can think of. Sac bunting, pitch to contact, cutting down on strikeouts. Not saying any of that is bad, or can't work, it's just how it is. I think Molitor was one strikeout away from asking Sano to choke up with two strikes and slap it the other way. Of course Gardy was on board with that stuff but as it turns out, he wasn't the one driving it. Gardy is a big personality and could command instant authority in the Nationals clubhouse.
  17. Your thread about unwritten rules is that way >>>>>>>>>> I think "people fight" or "cultures clash sometimes" is a pretty accurate summary of this article, although there is definitely some good stuff in it.
  18. Gardy is everything Matt Williams wasn't. I would think they will at least interview him.
  19. What a flippin' good season. Meaningful games in October. Next year, let there be meaningful games in November! (or something)
  20. Thanks old goat. No disrespect to you gunnarthor but I have not picked up on any such signals here at Twins Daily.
  21. Wow. Hard to believe this is it!
  22. Anyone know if StatCast collects data on catcher throw velocity? I'd be interested in seeing how A.J. and Suzuki stack up against the league average. All the Twins catchers for that matter. This is not a knock on Suzuki, since I'm ok with him one more season, but it seems like his throws to bases don't get there as quick as they need to. Also I still don't recall a time he's picked a runner off a base.
