    I have no idea how the Twins evaluated Ryu or the other 2-3 decent guys they had a realistic shot at. But factoring in everything else, I think the Twins needed pitching worse than any other team, and therefore should have been willing to pay more for it.

    Wheeler could have been recruited here. He was not predestined for Philly in any way, shape or form. Offer him 10% more than the highest offer and an ironclad promise that Twins fans won’t throw glass beer bottles at your fiancée if you don’t make it through five innings. Bumgarner got 5/80. Offer him 4/80, maybe even slightly front loaded, plus a player opt out after two years so he can bargain with Arizona. Ryu, dunno. Same offer, earlier in the free agency period, maybe that gets it done if you buy the thought that his price was driven up from being the last best remaining free agent pitcher. Thoughts?

    I agree about Hill/Wood. Hill really wanted to return to the Dodgers, too, but I guess the offer wasn’t there.

    LOL, 21-3 Green Bay at half. Imagine if the Duluth Eskimos were the class of the NFL, the Milwaukee Badgers were the excuse-making runner-ups year after year, and no one knew where Green Bay was. Imagine John Facenda describing the “frozen tundra of northern Minnesota, the winds of Lake Superior whipping off the lake and through the masks of the opponents, reduced to mere mortals here in this wasteland, frozen with cold, frozen with fear.”... * Instead, we will have PA tomorrow morning at 9 AM telling us how impossible it is to win in the playoffs as a six seed against a number one seed on the road in the playoffs after such an “emotional” game on a short week on the road against a one seed as a six seed after a short week etc etc and so on and so on...... At least PJ Fleck showed up this year. I would so rather be a fan of Wisconsin teams, however I would still rather live in Minnesota.. I will have to think about this. /rant * I made that up. Not bad, eh? ** anyone else out enjoying a drink tonight hit me up lol

    To be honest, I don’t think we’ll see another Mauer type contract (8/184), and I’m okay with that. The trend for the Twins is for fewer years and I’m okay with that. Fewer years but a 23/year value shouldn’t be unacceptable, however.

    Dumb questions: could they, will they, or should they extend Cousins next year, and could they do that in order to lessen next year’s cap hit? Would the Patriots be interested in trading for him?

    That’s fine, but you seem to spend a lot of effort arguing against those people who do want to see a deep playoff run. (I will resist saying “World Series Champion or bust” because I think most people will be able to agree that a season like the 2014 Royals or 2017 Brewers would be a success, even if ending in disappointment.) One thing I don’t understand is why you feel it would be going “all in” if the Twins traded away one or two of our Top 6 or 8 prospects? Do you not have confidence in the front office in replenishing the system? Another thing I don’t understand is why you think signing a contract like Wheeler’s or Ryu would be considered breaking the bank? Do you not see the organization as being in good financial health? Edit: not picking on you, just airing the questions (again) to anyone in general

    It’s astonishing to me that Zimmer went to the grave with all three second-half time outs. Even if Diggs hangs on to that pass they can use time outs after they kick to San Fran, but there’s just not enough time. Of course it didn’t really matter how many time outs the Vikings had anyway, they lost the game earlier in the half.

    +1 Take a chance.. if you fail to convert, a short field and quick score almost works in your favor as much as punting to a great run offense and tired defense on a long field.

    Nice stop. Still some game left. Absolutely needed a stop here. San Francisco’s run game is just too good, however. Edit: And then that. I thought it looked like Cousins could have tucked and run for the first down, on the last possession. Let’s face it, QBs like him who don’t run are anachronisms in today’s game.

    When Polanco was extended (for peanuts, in my opinion), others then pointed out that it would make Polanco easier to trade. So, maybe, maybe not.

    Like you, I would say Eddie would be little affected by a switch back to a standard baseball in a hypothetical 2020 season. Sano hits the ball a mile, Kepler has a great level swing that produces great backspin, and Cruz is just a professional hitter plain and simple, so hopefully not those guys either. Garver has a great eye for the strike zone but I’d be most concerned with Garver’s production dropping off next year, dejuiced ball or not.

    Not to jump on Doogie or anyone else, but if I recall, Phil Miller wrote than the Twins’ offer to Donaldson was “more than 20 million in annual value” or words to that effect. And that they haven’t really raised their original offer. So, guess the Twins offer to be something like 4/84 or so, and not 4/105-110.
