    I was listening to the bottom of the 2nd inning on the radio. Atteberry and Provus were dissecting every pitch Maeda threw, in clinical detail. Very weird. I am just hoping they were going down a rabbit hole, and not communicating something subtle about what the team is concerned about.

    Any time someone suggests something like “but the Twins are 7-5 in 9 inning games”, I do put my antennae up for spin. I mean, it’s a fact, and I’ve probably said it myself, but ... ... but watch a game and make up your own mind, I guess. I hope the Twins turn it around. However, we already know they don’t have the pitcihing. Therefore, the offense will need to pick up the slack (like in 2019). When Washington started 19-31 in 2019, they had Scherzer, Strasburg and Corbin ready in the rotation. When Cleveland made up 11 games on the Twins, they had a .500 record but a good team as well (Lindor, etc). The Twins are neither the 2019 Washington or 2019 Cleveland team.

    The Twins are short Kepler and Sanó, and decide to carry five starters and eight relievers into the series with a day off Thursday. There’s little chance to make good late inning substitutions. When Baldelli does make a substitution, it’s to remove someone like Arraez, one of his best players. The double Rosario hit to left to Arraez should have been caught. It had an expected batting average of .150 — in other words, 85 of 100 of those balls are caught. I’m not blaming Arraez. We saw Eduardo Escobar shy away from a ball just like that in 2014, because he wasn’t familiar with the outfield. But we do need his bat in the lineup.

    One thing they might want to try to get Garver out of his funk, if the right pitcher is on the mound, is to have the whole lineup take the first pitch, then when Garver’s spot comes up 7th or 8th, let him sit on a first pitch fastball and tell Garver just to swing easy and whack it up the middle.

    Thanks for clarifying. I meant that he was competent in 2019 with his catcher’s mitt on, as well. Compared to 2018 when he was very, very bad behind the plate.

    The Garver story as I see it: 2018: Promoted to majors by necessity, trial by fire 2019: Worked his butt off in the off-season and spring training to be competent receiver; monster offensive season In 2020, the pandemic and stoppage probably knocked him off his game. I’m willing to give him or any player a free pass because of that. There might be some carryover from that here in 2021. I do think the hitting comes back at some point.

    Starting pitchers, three weeks in to 2021: Maeda/Berrios/Pineda: 4-4, 3.69 ERA (12 starts) Darvish/Gibson/Ynoa: 5-2, 2.67 ERA (14 starts) Which group would you rather have? I think I would prefer the group with Berrios, and if there were a mock draft consisting of those six pitchers, Berrios would be the player taken first in most of them, in my opinion. I also don’t think Ynoa lasts the season in the rotation. But interesting trios of guys who either are, or might have been, rotation pieces for the Twins.
