  1. We have a roster full of players who are preforming worst than last year but a team that is winning a lot more games. There has to be something positive happening within the locker room and coaching staff.
  2. Rosario will be fine, he'll mature and be more patient at the plate. I think sometimes we get too worried about getting walks, Hick walked 16% of his AB last year and it's now down to 7%. Which Hicks would you want batting for you, the 2014 version or the 2015 version? Being aggressive and productive as a 23 year old, isn't all that bad.
  3. Would the World Series Champions Giants be an example of a team without great fielding OF’s winning? Gordon & Cain are both great fielders and hitters. KC had a choice to go with a light hitter and great fielder in Dyson, but signed Alec Rios who is more of a hitter than fielder. Cain is the perfect 4th outfielder, but not your everyday player. Buxton should be a good hitter to go along with the great fielding. If you keep a one of Hicks/Rosario and find a power hitting corner outfielder, you have a more balance team and shouldn’t hurt your outfield defense by much since Buxton is so good in center.
  4. The first year, we have to give Smith partical credit for the awful team - helping us get Buxton and Berrios. I don't think Smith is a lifelong talent evaluator like Ryan is, but I do think he should get credit for getting the Twins more involved in the latin market signings. I believe that was one of his roles prior to taking the GM position. So I'll also thank him for Sano.
  5. But they will block players. The Twins don't cut guaranteed contracts
  6. Mauer’s current production level shouldn’t guarantee him a spot in the lineup. I dislike making Sano at the age of 22, the full time DH. I understand it for this year, but next year he should be at a position and if that turns out to be first base, then Mauer competes with the other players for DH AB’s or back up duties at first base. He’s like Nolasco and Pelfrey for the rotation, an expensive option buying you time to find a better replacement. The sooner you find that replacement, the better off the team’s future will be.
  7. Is it fair to say, the goal of the Twins FO is to build a team that wins games, not just field a team of best individual talent? Based on expectation of last place by most people for the Twins (myself included), we would have to say that they been successful at this point. And I think we would have to agree that Hunter has played a large role in the team’s success. So Rasmus & Caberera might be better individual players, but not better players to achieve the Twins goal of winning more games. Plus, to sign Rasmus at the time you signed Hunter, you would have had to make a multi-year commitment, which based on the Twins farm system, Hunter is a better signing (praying he not signed to another year). So Kirby_waved_at_me is correct in “I told you so!”
  8. If you can't use a stat that is "Wins above Replacement" and have it correlate to actual wins, it's really a meaningless stat. But that been discussed before.
  9. Based on total WAR numbers, the Twins should have 3rd worst win total in baseball, but they are middle of the pack in actual wins. Must be the intangible's Hunter brings to the team that make up the difference.
  10. That seems like a TR type of deal, he loves aging pitchers and getting Shields for the ages of 33-37 at $20 million a year sounds like a bargin. Got to love his 95 ERA+ this year.
  11. Keeping a bad player on the roster isn't a good idea, but Mauer may not be a baseball HOF player, but he is going to be a Twins HOF player and have a statue in front of Target field. And he deserves all of that, so just cutting him isn't an option. It would be a marketing disaster. But cutting back his playing time and seeing what other players can do should be an option. At one time, I wanted him to play 150 games a year, but not anymore
  12. As long as you don't suggest replacing Pelfrey, he our best stater since the break. And he looks even better knowing that he not guareented $10+ million over the next 2-4 years.
  13. I don't see any indication Ryan thinks this is a mess, which is a problem but a reality, because he not going anywhere.
  14. I agree that normally it would make sense to get the younger May into the rotation this year, but looking at next year’s rotation and bullpen, I can see getting a look at him in the bullpen is necessary. 2016 Rotation: Santana Hughes Gibson Nolasco (who like Pelfrey this year, we’ll all complain about why he is in the rotation, but if healthy, his guaranteed contract will keep him in the rotation) Milone/May/Berrios/Meyer/etc all for 5th starter Because the way the Twins set up the roster over the last couple years, they are locked into contracts for the starter with no trade value. If May can handle the 8th inning, he becomes a valuable piece for next year’s team.
  15. Joe Mauer had the hammer and used the hammer, it's hard to see him as blameless
  16. Santana has as many innings as Nolasco, and nobody want Ricky back in the rotation. I agree Pelfrey shouldn't be in the rotation and a younger May should be given the rotation spot. The Twins should only be interested trades that also help for future years. You don't want to make the short term investments - like trading a May type players for a Pelfrey type player - just to make changes. The veteran players are not always better than the young players they have in the system now.
  17. And Ricky Nolasco and Mike Pelfry are tied for 3rd best WAR for the year. Not sure WAR is the best argument for including May in the rotation.
  18. Mauer to the DL, there has to be something wrong with him and we need to get him out of the lineup. Plouffe has played some first this year and can play first & third. Sano can be used at third and DH, since I would think they want to keep playing him at third. Vargas can get some AB's still at DH and first. Time off has got to help Mauer and if it doesn't and the Twins want to contend, Mauer is going have to be looked at as a part-time player based on his play.
  19. Hopefully the Goodrum promotion means Sano is not staying in AA much longer.
  20. The door has always been open for Buxton, he just needs to keep hitting and walk through it.
  21. Agree, some time at AAA would probably help him. Hopefully they would then bring up a power hitter for the DH role instead of using Escobar in that role.
  22. Mauer said the last 2 years that he has no effect from the concussions. I think the concussion is becoming a excuse for just the fact that he not the same player anymore. His hot streaks used to be a 2 month period, now it's 2 weeks. I hope you are right, if the Twins are going to continue to be a playoff contender, it would be nice to see Mauer's overall production improve. It will be hard to expect a .400 average with RISP.
  23. Joe's BABIP is still around .330 (.342 last year) which is around is career average so I don't think it's the shifts affecting him. It looks more like a slower bat which is increasing the strike out totals which has been going up since 2012. He was helped with a high BABIP in 2013, which if it was at his career average he would have hit below .300. The increasing in K's isn't related to an increase in power, so it's really hard to hit .300 with his strike out totals, just ask Danny Santana. But if he get's 90-100 RBI's and helps the team win, it hard to be too disappointed with his season. But you really can't expect to see the Mauer of five years ago.
  24. What will be really interesting, will they actually keep Stauffer long enough to pay him his bonus? You know it true love then Though he receives only a $2.2MM guarantee, recently-signed Twins righty Tim Stauffer can earn significantly more through incentives, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports. Stauffer can max out his deal at a total of $3.95MM ($1.75MM bonus) if he makes 55 appearances in the coming season. He can earn $250K bonuses upon his 15th, 18th, 21st, 24th, and 27th appearances, land $100K for the 45th time he takes the hill, and nab another $250K at number fifty-five.
  25. I agree that if someone is on a pace to drive in 100 runs, it's hard to call it a bad year. But based on what you wrote, do you this 2013 was a bad year for Mauer when he drove in only 47 runs and had a .239/.389/.273 line with RISP?
