  1. I have to admit, I not the biggest fan of Ryan but this is getting a little old. He trades HIcks prior to the winter meeting - he acted too soon. He doesn't pick up a RP in the meeting - what is he waiting for? No wonder he tried to retire early.

    Pelfrey

Agree, and I think the valuation is often misused. But fangraph's calculation is based on the value of players during FA. So it is a valid comparison for this case. I also agree that no way would I want to pay $8 million per WAR in a FA market, but that's the market. It's more of a measure of how overvalued buying WAR in the FA market really is and why it's not real good investment for teams.

    Pelfrey

According to Fangraphs, Pelfrey was a bargin for the Twins, worth $26 million but cost only$15 million. Last year he was worth $15.9 million, so either Boras is terrible or Fangraphs valuation are.
  4. Not offering Fien would show a big change of direction for the Twins. But on a 1 year deal, he will probably end up being a better investment than a 3 year deal for a FA.
  5. I think including players height is interesting: "Another interesting addition is player height, which immediately becomes the closest thing to scouting that’s incorporated into KATOH. Given the same stat line, taller players are generally more likely to succeed in the majors than their shorter counterparts." I guess I own an apology to Blyleven for ripping him everytime he give a pitchers heigth. Who knew he was just using advanced metrics
  6. I'm against signing one of the free agent to a 3 or 4 year contact. We done it the last couple years with the starting pitching and that hasn't worked out. With the surplus of back of the rotation starters and Plouffe, they have trade options. I think a better opiton would be to start converting some of the starters or make a trade to fill out the bullpen. We have a lot of arms that should be ready soon in the minors, so let's not lock up veterans to long-term deals. You can alway make trades during the season if you need to pick up a player.
  7. Here's some trend based on the standard deviation from runs scored (the smaller the deviation, the better comparison): Year's OBP SLG 1990-'95 2.79 2.89 2000-'05 2.20 2.57 2010-'15 3.72 2.57 2015 4.74 3.31 I think it's trending away from OBP and more to SLG.
  8. I think the correlation between OBP and Runs scored is becoming a thing of the past in today’s game. It’s more a game of power, with the slugging percentage being a better indication of scoring. Here’s how the top 10 teams in runs scored rated in OBP & SLG: Team runs-rank OBP-rank SLG-rank Blue Jays 1 1 1 Yankees 2 9 4 Rangers 3 5 10 Red Sox 4 6 7 Rockies 5 15 3 Astros 6 16 2 Royals 7 11 11 Diamondbacks 8 8 8 Orioles 9 24 5 Nationals 10 12 15
  9. I think the CF trade market is going to make Hicks a better trade chip than Plouffe. Seattle and San Diego both are looking to CF help and have young catchers that might be available.
  10. Without adding Park, there was no chance the Twins trade Plouffe. They didn't want to lose both of there top RBI hitters. Now, they at least have the option to shop Plouffe. With Sano being a cornerstone of the team, I hope they do trade Plouffe. Right now Sano seems to be the man without a position and if the outfield doesn't work for him, they have created a problem that didn't need to happen. Let's hope for an active offseason for Ryan.
  11. Agree, Hicks is the most likely to be traded. Centerfield is actually a position that many teams are looking to fill, so he has value. Molitor doesn't appear to be a big fan of him, like he is with Rosario. SD is looking for a CF, so he'll be in the Norris trade and the Twins get a catcher.
  12. How soon we forget the centerfield situation of 2013-2014. He is the type of non roster player you should want to sign. You might need a bridge to Buxton and you need to keep your trade options open Hicks and Rosario. So why not bring him back.
  13. On the field, I think sometimes we forget that we are not dealing with a fantasy team and things like leadership and a winning attitude matter. Not all winning is either stat based or luck. I think Hunter’s contributions to the team is often undervalued by some, but not by the team or organization Off the field, unfortunately a large number of people agree with Hunter’s beliefs. Probably some in the clubhouse, but they are just not vocal about the beliefs. But with Hunter, you knew where he stood and you could agree or disagree.
  14. I don't think there is any chance they take Nolasco even if you covered 2/3 of the salary. They moved Garza out of the rotation last year to get younger players starts. With the injury history, you might be able to get him cheap so I think you have to look into it. But if you are sending multiple young prospects, it might be better using them for a younger catcher.
  15. In 2009, Mauer had to stay behind in Flordia for April to rehab. I alway wonder if they really worked him hard and made him stronger, because he came back in May an hit 11 HR's during the month. Which is many home runs as he has hit in any year afterwards.
  16. I agree the Twins had to sign Mauer to a contract in 2010. He was a 27 year old, the double power had turned into home runs and he was an MVP players going into his prime. But in signing the contract, Mauer also increased the expectation on him. In the four years Management “wasted his prime years”, we went through bi-lateral leg weakness in 2011 and a drop in batting average from .324 to .277 in 2014. It’s true the Twins could have spent more money, but that doesn’t excuse Mauer for his production. For all the Mauer bashing, we have an equal amount of Mauer excuse making. All this leave us to where we are now, hoping a soon to be 33 year old will justify not only his salary but what seems to be a guaranteed spot in the lineup.
  17. Especially when we already have a below average 32 year old locked up for the next 3 years
  18. You have Mauer, Plouffe and Sano for 3 positions. Plouffe is clearly the best fielder, so you have to keep him at 3rd, Sano is your future star and 1B is his future position so you should start letting him play there. So that leave Mauer competing for the DH spot and backup first baseman. I know he doesn't profile as a DH, but he also doesn't profile as a 1B. The Twins need to start building a playoff team and stop worrying about how they are going to plug Mauer into the lineup. If he can produce, there will be a spot for him but if he continues to trend downward, they need to start moving on.
  19. RBI are situational based on what you do with your opportunities. According to Baseball Reference here's what the Twins top RBI players did: Base BR Player Runners Scored BRS% Hunter 329 60 18.2% Plouffe 392 67 17.1% Mauer 365 58 15.9% Dozier 350 50 14.3% Hunter actually was the Twins best hitter in driving in runs given the opportunity.
  20. Maybe for me. A lot will be determined by the off-season. I would hate to see Sano as the DH next year. He is too young to get stuck there. Twins need to make some roster decisions, so bring back a 20 homerun hitter shouldn't be ruled out when you don't have any other proven option.
  21. It ridiculous to say Hunter has gotten a pass - I believe we have a 100 page "Stick a fork" in him page. Just because some people don't agree 100% with you, doesn't mean they are giving him a pass.
  22. Agree that it's more about building the roster and depending on who is traded, Hunter may still be a good fit. I hope the conversation is had with him about reduced playing time, but Shane Robinson is going to get 200 ab's, so I think when you have a roster full of young OF's, Hunter doesn't need to be tossed aside. If his leadership is worth 1 win, then based on your numbers he would be worth $7.5 million next year. And if he was worth 1 win for the team this year along with his performance, he was worth every penny they paid him this year.
  23. If you don't accept the player saying he doesn't suffer any concussion symptoms and him playing more games than any other season as proof that he not suffering any from concussion, what would make you believe it's not concussion related? Does a 32 year old player have to hit like he's 25 before you accept that he no longer has concussions?
  24. Except in the article Mauer said he has been symptom-free since October 2013, so why couldn't he work out? "Mauer, who has been symptom-free since late October, typically doesn't do much hitting in the offseason in order to conserve energy for the long grind ahead." Sorry - see that was already brought up
  25. No need too, if we lose tonight, I sure we'll have the same topic tomorrow
