Is Kody Clemens Turning Back into a Pumpkin?
DJL44 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Either one would have to leapfrog over Fitzgerald and Holland. Miranda and Julien are showing signs of life again as well. -
Here are the numbers specifically YEAR - slash VS LH 2023 - .095/.174/.238 2024 - .227/.261/.318 2025 - .167/.211/.259 If your memory is comparing him to 2023, he's better but he's actually hitting lefties worse than he did in 2024. He needs to be platooned. I think we've found a role for Jonah Bride - pinch hitter for Larnach.

Is Kody Clemens Turning Back into a Pumpkin?

I took a look at what's different for Clemens offensively. He's significantly dropped his strikeout rate and doubled his walk rate - to the point where it looks like he's traded off strikeouts for walks. That's huge. His performance vs breaking balls is drastically improved year-on-year: a .146 xWOBA last year and .480 this season. He's definitely figured out how to hit sweepers. I don't know if he will see another sweeper for a month. He's hitting the ball harder when he barrels the ball and barreling more often. He's chasing pitches less often and jumping on the first pitch more often. He's pulling the ball less often and going up the middle more often (though he still rarely goes opposite field). -

How about we worry about things that have actually happened rather than hypotheticals. I can "what if" a hundred scenarios that could change the roster. -

He's been pretty good defensively. Even if he regresses to his career 82 OPS+ offense, he's a better choice at 2B than Julien. He's going to be streaky, contributing mainly when he hits a HR. That's a guy worth having on the MLB roster. -
I tend to rank on upside, so I'd go with Hill, Soto, Prielipp, Morris. Morris looks like a 5th starter or middle reliever. Prielipp looks like an excellent reliever, but I doubt his arm survives 160-180 innings a season as a starter. Soto and Hill have top of the rotation upside but are a long way off.

I don't know if Julien can make the adjustments he needs at AAA. His problem is he can't hit breaking balls at the edge of the zone. In AAA, not enough players can spot their breaking ball at the edge of the zone.

Raya should be sent to the bullpen. Has there ever been anything good to say about him? He's a 30-year-old pitcher at AAA with a terrible ERA and a bad K/BB ratio. He might make a good TV color analyst someday.

Might be time to send Dobnak down and swap him with Trent Baker out of the Wichita rotation.

I get that Eeles is an interesting story because he's short and was undrafted but stories don't win baseball games. Both Ryan Fitzgerald and Will Holland have been hitting better than Eeles and both of them have better defensive reputations. The Twins have a ton of options at 2B - Castro, Lee, Clemens are in the majors, Julien, Fitzgerald, Keaschall, Gasper and Austin Martin are on the 40 man roster. The last thing they need to do is add another 2B to the 40-man.

The #1 organizational need is still a catcher to replace Vazquez next season. That's not really something people shop for at the July trade deadline. They have enough depth and no gaping holes, though an injury between now and the deadline could change that assessment. They are unlikely to bring in a superstar due to the high price tag. It still might make some sense to make a trade to re-shape the roster. Miranda and Julien aren't helping them but could help another team. McCusker and Eeles aren't likely to get a shot in Minnesota but someone else could be interested. Another reliever with options could be useful.

I believe he gets a pay bump no matter what level he plays at now that he's played at AAA.- 13 replies
