  1. I suggested they write about the MLB playoff games that are happening every day and people treated that suggestion like I was asking for articles about birdwatching and trainspotting.
  2. There is no upside here. He's only going to decline until he's unpitchable. In that sense, he's just like the other veteran retreads they like to bring in rather than relying on their prospects. Unlike some 1-year free agents, he's not going to be worth anything at the trade deadline. They need to give most of their 2026 innings to pitchers who might be good in 2027. If there are still spots left they should find relievers among the leftovers that someone might want to acquire in July.
  3. Somebody has to write articles every day. Not every day has something actually happening.
  4. Or cut him and spend the $4.7M on a free agent 1B.
  5. They should be willing to risk losing him. This team can't afford to pay players above-market-rate contracts. They need to get bargains on everyone to compete with a $100M budget. If they keep him, the most likely scenario is they'll be sellers at the deadline. Nobody wanted him at the last deadline and they're certainly not going to want him at a higher price. If he isn't traded by November, they'll have to non-tender him. If he wasn't on the team already, nobody would be thrilled if they added him. Does anyone around here want to add a free agent LH-hitting platoon DH to this 40-man roster for $4.7M? I didn't think so.
  6. If they can't trade him then they definitely shouldn't tender him a contract at $4.7M. Even if they want him back, they should be able to sign him at cheaper dollar figure.
  7. I'm pretty sure the Twins aren't going to out-bid any other team on salary so the manager they get will be hired because no other team offered.
  8. .727 in MLB is better than .840 in AAA.
  9. Good point, but only playoff teams are buying at the deadline. Kyle Farmer didn't get dealt at the deadline, but then the Rockies signed him in the offseason. Trevor Larnach is going to find a job next season. It might not pay $4.7M.
  10. Ideally he'd be traded by the arbitration deadline of November, 21.
  11. You think the Pohlads are charging themselves 10% interest on a loan? Possible, but that's basically money laundering. If they're paying $50M interest on that $500M debt they are claiming, and they lose money with a payroll above $30M, then they won't be able to make a profit with a roster full of players making the league minimum. Poor, poor Pohlads - the only billionaire businessmen in major league baseball who don't know how to make money. Interesting how they lose all this money and yet nobody in charge of running the business gets fired. Even Dave St. Peter gets to show up to work and cash paychecks after being relieved of his job duties. That seems like a move incompetent people would make. Trade away all the cheap talent and throw real money away on a catcher nobody else wants. I could see that happening.
  12. Tender and trade. They need to take some outfielders off the 40-man roster. Even after cutting McCusker, Keirsey and Outman they will have Buxton, Wallner, Larnach, Martin, Roden, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Rosario and Fedko on the 40-man and Jenkins ready to add. 10 outfielders on the 40-man is above-average. Larnach's projected $4.7M arbitration salary is not an obstacle for any team that would want to use him as a strong-side platoon bat.
  13. Based on this season, when the Twins claimed a $100M loss on a $140M payroll, limiting their payroll to $49M would mean they only "lose" $10M. Can you get it any lower so the poor Pohlads can make a buck off this franchise? If they can get payroll down to $30M, that debt would be paid off by 2075.
  14. I'm hoping for Jorge Polanco - negative fielding but his bat makes up for it. Greg Gagne was a plus fielder.
  15. It doesn't help the team in the short or the long term. The traded an often injured, but effective when healthy reliever for a DFA candidate. Should have added a lotto-ticket foreign rookie player instead.
  16. I don't think he's going to continue to homer that often. He hit HR twice as often in MLB as he did in AAA - that's not sustainable. Likely to put up a .650 OPS over a full season. That's fine for a 3rd SS stashed in the minors but I wouldn't want that for my starter. That said, he does seem to be more selective at the plate than Brooks Lee.
  17. No, that one is trading for Outman.
  18. Joe Ryan was the obvious choice for this award.
  19. I have been struggling to find a short-term stopgap SS for this team. Their best option is probably to trade for another team's utility infielder (Mauricio Dubon?) and give him the job. They have to find someone besides Lee, even if it is just a utility backup. Catchers and shortstops are scarce. Having a really good one gives a team an advantage that can lead them to the playoffs.
  20. Martin and Lewis both showed improved performance in the 2nd half. That isn't enough to offset Outman, Gasper, Julien, Keirsey, McCusker, etc.
  21. I have more faith that Lee will improve at the plate than he will in the field. At the plate he can be more selective. You can't pick and choose which balls to field.
  22. Brooks Lee is a third baseman playing out of position. He’s not a middle infielder. Improved middle infield defense is critical to improving the Twins run prevention.
  23. Other interesting arbitration predictions Ben Rortvedt $1.3M Ryan Mountcastle $7.8M Adley Rutschman $6.8M Joey Bart $2.7M Jhoan Duran $7.6M Griffin Jax $3.6M Triston Casas $1.7M Nathaniel Lowe $13.5M Mauricio Dubon $5.8M
  24. MLB trade rumors used their pretty accurate arbitration model to predict these numbers Genesis Cabrera (5.149): $1.4MM Ryan Jeffers (5.089): $6.6MM Justin Topa (5.044): $1.7MM (Twins hold a $2MM club option with a $225K buyout) Michael Tonkin (5.044): $1.4MM Bailey Ober (4.093): $4.6MM Joe Ryan (4.033): $5.8MM Trevor Larnach (4.014): $4.7MM Royce Lewis (3.142): $3MM Anthony Misiewicz (3.082): $1.1MM Cole Sands (3.017): $1.3MM That saves about $7M compared to the guess above. It also shows that there is no reason to trade Joe Ryan to clear salary.
  25. Except for Keaschall, they held all of the really talented guys in AAA. The rookies they brought up to end the season were actually pretty old guys getting one last audition (Gasper, Fitzgerald, Outman, Keirsey, McCusker).
