  1. Making it harder for fielders to throw the ball is also part of the appeal. A heavier ball will reward foot speed resulting in more stolen bases and make it easier to beat out a bunt resulting in less defensive shifting. A softer ball just means fewer HR and more easy plays for the fielders with the same number of strikeouts as we have now. That's a recipe for incredibly boring low scoring games. Think how boring today's MLB would be if you took away 20% of the home runs and replaced them with fly ball outs.
  2. I was pretty sure we were going to see Ryan make his debut due to Maeda's injury but then I saw that Dobnak made a rehab start and I think I've changed my mind. Dobnak will come up before Ryan. There isn't an everyday spot for Miranda at the moment. Even if Sano or Donaldson got hurt that would just open a regular spot for Arraez.
  3. There is no data to support this assertion. Pitchers commonly train with weighted balls, if that was an injury risk they wouldn't. The ball weighs 5 ounces. My suggestion is increasing that to 5.5 ounces. A football weighs 15 ounces and NFL quarterbacks have a lower rate of throwing injuries than MLB pitchers. A pitcher would probably like a ball that is lighter and has a better grip because he can get more spin and strike out batters more easily. Pitchers WILL NOT like a heavier ball that spins less. The idea isn't to make pitchers happy, it's to get us out of the "Home Run Derby" era of baseball and get more athletic action into the game. A lighter ball that spins more would mean even more strikeouts, even fewer balls in play and an even more boring MLB.
  4. Make the ball 5-10% heavier. Pitchers throw with less velocity, breaking balls spin less, batter exit velocity decreases and HR are harder to hit. Foot speed becomes more important. Strikeouts and HR go down, athletic fielding plays and stolen bases go up.
  5. If I heard correctly he left the game early with a shoulder injury.
  6. How many of the people saying "he was rushed" are the same people who accuse the Twins management of promoting too slowly and want to promote every minor league player after a hot week?
  7. Correct. Rooker is over 130 at-bats so he's no longer a "prospect". Nick Gordon should hit 45 days on the active roster soon as well. Everyone else should maintain rookie status until at least next season. Celestino is the next highest for service time.
  8. Rooker will be off this list if he gets 13 more at-bats. He's batting 2nd today so I'm guessing he's off the list by the end of this week.
  9. Moran looks like an obvious guy to promote. Still, he's only played 7 games for the Saints. Also, they may have wanted a RHP.
  10. It appears they don't want to burn service time on anyone who might have a future. They'll keep everyone in the minors who doesn't have to be added this offseason. They'll promote the guys already on the roster or must add this offseason on or after September 1.
  11. I'm surprised Nick Gordon is < 45 days on the active roster with 37 games played.
  12. I agree with all of this, except I think I'd send him to Cedar Rapids or Wichita.
  13. Celestino has the CF spot in AAA. I'm guessing nobody gets promoted until September. It is disappointing that the Twins seem to want to turn him into a left fielder (see the comment in the article that Martin doesn't have enough arm for CF).
  14. I think I'd rather promote Austin Martin to AAA than Palacios. Martin has a .439 OBP in Double-A. For comparison, Martin has a similar RF/9 to Palacios but more errors at shortstop. Wichita's schedule is done September 19 but St Paul plays until October 3. I think we'll see a bunch of transactions on 9/20.
  15. Palacios is having a good year but an 800 OPS doesn't scream "promote me". That's not as good as what Nick Gordon did in 2018 and he was two years younger then than Palacios is now. I haven't heard rave reviews about his defense which makes me believe he's behind Royce Lewis, Austin Martin, Jose Miranda and Nick Gordon on the organizational depth chart. He has earned himself another season but I don't see a reason to protect him on the 40 man roster this offseason. Similar players will be available on minor league contracts as free agents.
  16. It is incredibly common for young pitchers to get injured. Of the pitchers who get drafted, 30-40% will require a surgery while in the minor leagues.
  17. You may not have been paying close attention to the rule changes. The active roster only expands to 28 (two more players) in September.
  18. I am not going to subscribe to cable or satellite dish again so I have not watched Twins games. I think the only game I watched this season was when I was in Illinois and they were playing the White Sox. I still listen on the radio and check the highlights on my cell phone. Baseball is a great sport to have on in the background. I agree that the length of baseball games means I might not ever watch one beginning to end again. I almost never have 3-1/2 hours of uninterrupted time when I'm at home. I stopped watching football years ago partly because my time on a Sunday in the fall is too valuable to use it sitting in front of the TV all afternoon. I also agree that baseball needs to find a way to get more balls in play - defensive and baserunning is fun to watch. Most of my sports consumption is watching my daughter play fastpitch softball. When that ends I'll probably spend more time in the summer hiking, bicycling and boating.
  19. Who would you rather have picking splinters on the major league bench - Gordon or Cave? Gordon got sent down because he has options and wouldn't be playing. I don't think either of them make the 2022 40 man roster.
  20. If you think a player could be better if he just does "fill in the blank" then you have to keep him around long enough to see if he can learn how to do that. Grabbing waiver wire projects is fine for the rest of this season. I'm not concerned if they're learning in AAA or the big leagues as long as they have a plan for each of the acquisitions.
  21. There's plenty of time in the offseason to discuss what should happen in the offseason. Until then I think I'll watch some baseball.
  22. I guess it's never too early to start the offseason around here. Sometimes it feels like a perpetual offseason.
  23. Jose Berrios was basically a 6 inning starter and he's top 10 in innings pitched. One thing I've often wondered is why starters need as much rest now when they're throwing 80 pitches as they did when they threw 120 pitches. A smart team could shift to a 4 man rotation and get 8 more starts out of their ace.
  24. Yes, players have to be on the 40 man roster to get on the 26 man roster. Furthermore, September will only be a 28 man roster in 2021.
