  1. In the case of Vazquez the Twins have Jair Camargo, who just came back after injury, and a whole lot of other catchers who hit and field worse than Vazquez. Camargo is likely to have an OPS around 600 with defense worse than Vazquez. At best he's a push.
  2. I don't care. He's a better bat than Miranda, Larnach or Buxton. They can sit the bench on their rest day.
  3. I don't know if this is how teams win in the playoffs anymore. Any starting pitcher they get is going to give maybe 5-10 innings per playoff series. A big bat can contribute every game.
  4. Santana hits lefties best. He has for several seasons. Miranda is a much better choice at 1B vs RHP. Miranda should move to DH vs LHP and let Santana play 1B.
  5. Right. If the Polanco trade is the worst trade in Twins history then the Twins are the best team in the history of MLB at making trades.
  6. How about getting over ALL the trades the Twins made in the past 10 years. Do other teams fans whine as much about players they traded away as Twins fans?
  7. Jorge Polanco has been awful this season and is now (predictably) on the injured list. Gio Urshela had a WAR of 0.8 and an $8.4M salary for the Angels after the Twins traded him away. Both of those trades look even better with hindsight than they did on the day the trade happened.
  8. There is plenty of room on the roster for another LF/1B/DH bat. Alonso is a good bat but JD Martinez is probably a better bat and would not cost as much for prospects.
  9. He has done well shutting down lefthanded batters. He's not particularly effective against RHP. They like to hit his breaking ball when he leaves it over the plate. He is the best alternative they have, better than Thielbar or Funderburk. Keep him in favorable matchups and it should go okay.
  10. First, a .775 OPS is well above average in 2024. Second, that's where Castro is playing. He's the starting second baseman so he can't play the outfield unless Julien returns.
  11. I'll be shocked if he is ever able to pitch a full season. He hasn't pitched in 2 years and there is no timetable for a return. It's more likely he retires than he pitches 50 innings in the majors.
  12. Those are not the names I thought you would give. I was thinking more of Schobel and Keaschall. Prato and Helman are minor league utility players who the Twins would gladly trade to fill a hole on the MLB roster. Looking at players who have to be added to the roster this winter or risk losing to Rule 5: David Festa, Kalai Rosario, Marco Raya, Travis Adams, Pierson Ohl, Andrew Morris, Jaylen Nowlin They won't protect all of those players and there is some interesting pitching on that list. Ricardo Olivar was available last year but was too raw to get selected. Catchers who can hit are scarce, he would likely get selected this winter.
  13. The trade for Okert has been helpful. Thielbar has missed time and Okert has shut down LH hitters. With multiple LH relievers they can afford to matchup more than once in a game if needed. Sands has improved. Alcala has been healthy. Staumont has been healthy and effective. I think there's even some upside if they finally move Varland to the bullpen permanently.
  14. I would trade both Festa and Raya to get a quality starting pitcher with multiple years of team control. The pitcher with the most helium is Zebby Mathews, I'm sure teams would ask for him.
  15. If the Twins trade for Luzardo that will probably remove Woods Richardson from the rotation and he's been one of the best starting pitchers on the team. I don't see them trading for pitching unless someone has a severe injury.
  16. Just for context, MLB average is .240/.311/,387 for an OPS below 700. Most league average hitters will have a month-long stretch this season where they hit 30 points above or below that.
  17. It's also important to calibrate expectations to a season where the league is hitting .240 - the lowest league batting average since 1968 - the year of the pitcher. If Julien strikes out less he's probably also going to walk less and his OBP is still solid even with his recent struggles.
  18. They have a player named Nes Cafe? I wouldn't be surprised if he had a cup of coffee someday.
  19. Not sure, but more likely than not and if they're better it probably won't be that much better.
  20. And the catchers pile up at the bottom of that list. Out of catchers with 50 or more plate appearances he's 55th of 59 in fWAR because he's 9th in defense. That's not good but 60 catchers are guaranteed MLB roster spots. If you cut Vazquez you are more likely than not to end up with a player worse than Vazquez.
