  1. That's one way to look at it: he's the only leader to step up. But that doesn't make him a good leader. Potentially a better leader would have stepped up and provided a better direction. I heard Hunter pumping up his team mates a couple seasons ago, praising them in the media. Ditto Giminez this year. Santana has been praised for his work with Berrios and younger pitchers. Dozier has been most outspoken in criticizing the FO for selling his teammates this season. It's fairly well known that Dozier writes himself into the lead-off spot because he likes to take advantage of pitchers willingness to pump fastballs early. He tends to start extraordinarily slow which makes me question his off-season regimen (I know he builds homes for charity in central america, but that doesn't appear to get him ready). He claims he changed his approach when his power arrived, finding a strategy that worked with his guess hitting approach at the plate. He hasn't apparently shared his knowledge with any younger players. He's a nice player. He just comes up little when we need him most. Maybe he's the only leader on the team. Maybe he's just declared himself leader and others are being surpressed.
  2. Tigers will hold on to Justin try to compete, then sell at the deadline next year if necessary. Why deal with 1 team when you can try to drive the price up through competition later? As others have pointed out, the tigers are built to win now. They can't shed all the contracts, so might as well give their guys one last run at it.
  3. He's a poor leader in my opinion. He's the reason why the team lacks leadership. I think his personality may suppress other better leaders as well. He's a nice player, but to me he's part of the problem, part of the old selfish losing culture.
  4. Any chance we get a game in?
  5. I doubt Garver is a longtime solution at catcher. I'd be happy with giving him a chance... next season. Giminez was literally the only Twin still saying we were good when we had our first 4 game losing streak. We came right back and swept the Tribe. Despite run differential's and paper mismatches, he told everyone we were good. Low and behold, the team believed him. They kept fighting. They're still in it. His experience is pretty valuable in my mind. Probably more so down the stretch. Garver will be up soon enough, but I'm happy Giminez is leading the team instead of one of the guys who lost 103 games last year.
  6. Like some sort of prophecy... hopefully there isn't a compounding problem like after that Astros series. Santana better pack a lunch today!
  7. Some analyst was suggesting that Verlander and his contact could simply be ceded if claimed. My thought is that Detroit probably wants to compete next season. Has Verlander actually passed through waivers yet? We'll need some additional bullpen help since Molitor runs through his arms. He'll have to shuffle and use our farm to rotate in fresh arms. I'd OK either way. But there is virtually no chance of our system having someone better than even a declining Verlander. Let's just dispel that notion.
  8. When would molitor have pulled Davies? 2 2/3rd inning right? I'd love to see Molly pick some times to lengthen the leash. He had an opportunity to do so today. Have to gamble occasionally to save the pen.
  9. It's that the Dick Bremer stat he tried to invent earlier this year? The Bremometer or whatever?
  10. How many double plays? Feels like a lot. It was almost awkward watching everyone hit but him yesterday.
  11. I think Mauer is averaging more than 1 out per plate appearance since returning from injury. Not a huge exaggeration.
  12. I'd have liked to see Polanco take third. Obvious good read on the pitcher, catcher sailed high and away...
  13. Which raises the question, why combine the stats in the first place? They don't habe equal impact on offense or predicted runs... which raises another question, what does any of this have to do with Polanco's funk? I skipped to the end of the thread. Polanco needs to keep swinging hard. He got tentative for a little while.
  14. I was a big believer in Polanco a couple years ago because I thought he'd develop some power. He seems to have lost all aggression. Stopped trying to drive the ball. Seems to happen to a lot of our young hitters...
  15. Gonsalves moved to AAA Rochester... Coincidence? Are these all prep scouts?
  16. I don't think you can say Walker had the ceiling of a 4th or 5th outfielder, then call him a potential piece of the future. That type of player is constantly available through shopping other organization's farm systems or for a song on the FA market, much like the players you referenced. IE your bench guys should be cheap and replaceable and by definition not part of your future. Why not keep ABWII in the minors where he could try to work out the kinks in his game as opposed to bringing him up where there is no margin for error? I don't think they would have been wrong to give him a sip, and I don't think they were wrong to allow him to work at a lower level. Mostly, I think many of us can't figure out why anyone would be annoyed either way.
  17. I don't disagree. It's more about picking and choosing spots. And also using your entire pen. With a worn out pen, sometimes you need to take lumps or roll the dice. Rain delays early trouble all spell early hooks when other teams save their pens.
  18. Molitor never should have been the guy in the first place. He's actually performed slightly better than I thought he would. He's provided a steadying force to some degree and had okayish results. He's supposed to be a baserunning savant, but that has translated. His bullpen use is shortsighted and, in my opinion, plain reckless. He yanks his starters too soon leading to overuse of bull pen arms. Then he only uses half his arms in the pen, leading to overuse, burnout, and injuries. Perkins, May, Jepsen, guy with the red beard, Pressley, now Rogers and Duffey. All were used heavily and quickly depleted. We've seen what Belisle looks like rested vs. overworked. This is probably why we can look good over a month or two, and then the wheels fall off. Trust your starters to work out of some early jams and settle. Have them pitch without looking over their shoulder or knowing they're coming out in the 6th if 1 guy gets on, even if it's a dink or an error. His lineup construction has been ok. He's tinkered. I'm ok with that. But he's not fun, inspirational, or firey enough to motivate for 162 plus games, in my opinion.
  19. MLB ticker just showed that the twins would have had another year of control on Kintzler if we had waited 1 more week to call him up. Ouch.
  20. People are putting him in the same class as Buxton and Sano. His rep around the league still fits that for now. GMs make snap trades at the deadline they wouldn't make in the off-season. Sonny Gray was on the list. If you can't get that sort of value, he shouldn't be traded. But then realize, your analysis of Kepler seems to be higher than reasonable respective to the market.
  21. Because he should fetch a great return compared to other options. Kepler changed his swing and hitting profile to gain more power. There is a risk that the added HRs came at a significant price. You can't call a dead pull hitter who can't hit lefties an all around hitter. He's also not hitting for much average or power right now. Is he Jacque Jones or Justin Morneau?
  22. I dunno. This is sort of talk that makes me consider trading Kepler. What is your opinion based on? Rosario has a higher BA, OB, Slg. And is probably a better defender. They rose at similar rates and similar time frames. They each were perennially ranked on team prospect lists, but the 5 seasons the 2 overlapped, Rosario was ranked higher every year. They both peaked at no. 3. Granted Kepler rated highest most recently. I may be the only one who takes Rosario over Kepler. You are indicating a disparity in valuation vs production. Taking advantage of disparity in value is how you win trades. Eddie is considered by some to be a 4th outfielder. When do we begin to question whether Kepler is a platoon guy himself? Once his trade value diminishes? Eddie once out-homered Sano for a season. Yet his upside is below Kepler? Where's the floor for a prospect who can't hit lefties? In my opinion, upside is closer than people think. But the 2 are viewed like there's a huge chasm in talent. I'd like to take advantage of that if I can. BTW, I'm only trading him for controlled pitching with ace potential.
  23. I'd have traded Kintzler weeks ago. That said, if the return prospect has less of a chance to impact the club than the twins have of climbing back into the race, then keep him and try to sign him. I'd try to sell on guys I believe are overvalued by this market. I wonder if Kepler's struggles against lefties have already hurt his stock. Is he still blue chip? Jack Morris said he'd take his swing over Bellinger's. Rosario is a hitting machine in spurts with a disparate home vs away split but ability to hit lefties. Have enough teams noticed his remarkable improvement in plate discipline? Many still see him as a 4th outfielder. I think I'd rather have Eddie, and I think you can get more for Kepler. This may be more of an off-season move, but I think the teams willing to trade controlled-pitching may be more motivated now.
