    Regarding Arcia, I never thought I'd see fans taking Hicks over Arcia. If we could be patient with Hicks, we should be patient with Arcia. Yes he has power, yes he has hit for average. He's shown the willingness to learn, hit the ball opposite field, and try to work on his discipline. More than anything, he wants to win. I saw him carry a team of losers on his back for a week last year before Plouffe whiffed on a bunt and Arcia sprained his ankle in the ensuing run down. Assuming Hunter doesn't play for another 5 years, who else has his fire and leadership? Sano has the charisma, but Arcia has the fire. Re: Catching opportunities, the options are either too expensive or not much of an upgrade. Suzuki is struggling, but he's having a career worst year. He could rebound, or he might be gassed/too old. I think I role Zuke as uncomfortable as that feels. But we do have to get the pen some help. Fien can't be healthy, Boyer is over worked.

    I've never understood the hate for Duensing. I think he gets punished for coming into the game when the fans are already frustrated. Reminds of Jesse Crain-wreck. To me, Thompson has been so much worse and he still has options.

    Seriously? He was with the big league team almost the whole year last year. He got sent down this year because of his bat. He looked hopeless and confused at the plate. The fact that he was also less than stellar on the field just made the call easier. He's been given his shot. It's up to him to earn another shot. You don't just give away big league at-bats as part of a roster experiment without a pretty strong hunch? Otherwise you're just hoping and guessing. Look at Hicks. Three years later and people still don't know what to think of him. Good players will dominate lower levels. Santana needs to rake and get his confidence back. His defense won't win gold gloves, but he's good enough to play short in the big leagues. He really really really needs to take some walks though. No one was throwing him a strike when he was up.

    Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but it looked like Mauer only half stretched there.... I'ma stop piling on now. Come on bats! We need a slump buster. Arcia was usually good for that last year... Buxton can get this team fired up in a hurry if he can start hitting.

    I saw something like that in Mexico once... Seriously, Guy Fierri ordered a 15 inch hotdog with habenara peppers and onions out of a school bus.... uh oh, crushed... anyway, it was called a "homewrecker" and probably belongs at a ball park. May needs to get the ball down. Seriously? Again?

    I'll state again that I think the team's rebuild has been hurt more by relying too heavily on young players than too heavily on declining vets. Our inability to bring in talent in free agency left us with nothing to trade during lost seasons. It allowed developing players to quit working on their games, and left us without serviceable options all over the field. You can't always predict which vets will pan out, just like you can't predict which prospects will make it. This is why you bring in as much talent as you possibly can. in whatever capacity you can. I thought it was crazy that the team brought back Pelfrey. I thought they were crazy to go north with Boyer. I'm willing to forgive them on Stauffer and give them credit for cutting their losses. I actually hope he accepts his assignment and stays with the organization. His velocity was way down. I wouldn't mind seeing if he can provide something when healthy. Re: Tonkin, Oliveros, and Slama, look at our AAA line up. Our best hitters in Rochester are... Pinto? Santana? Arcia occasionally? I don't think dominating a bunch of Eric Fryers and Doug Bernier's means we should trust these guys to get Moustakis or Miggy in a big spot.

    To me, Stauffer was a necessary risk that didn't work out. Everyone saw how our bull pen collapsed last year. Everyone pointed to the pen as a weakness going into the year. We had to do something, and Stauffer was coming off an ok year. Similar to the Jered Burton signing in my eyes. Just didn't work out. I do not perceive lack of trust in young players to be a huge problem. We relied on Hicks for like 3 years now, and each year he's screwed us to some extent. This year was less because Robinson put together a decent first month. Danny Santana screwed us. Vargas and Arcia have screwed us. Imagine if we hadn't signed Torii Hunter. I think it's a bigger mistake to trust AAA success over a Major League track record. But here's the thing, you can have both IF you take the risk and bring in some vets. You can always replace them with young guys if they warrant the call or the veteran falters. Out of our FA signings, Hunter has worked out, Nunez has contributed, and Robinson has contributed. Stauffer did not. Santana hasn't played. Meanwhile, Pinto has flopped, Santana has flopped, Buxton and Sano aren't ready. Burdi has imploded. Reed hasn't been much better. Arcia, Vargas, Walker and Hicks seems stuck in a state of arrested development. It's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face, organizational depth requires some Stauffers.

    I mean, the real real problem is that Mauer has lost bat speed. It's made worse for Joe because he was a hitter who depended on letting the ball get deep. He now has to guess, start his swing earlier, watch it less, and square it up more exactly. Mauer's inability to lift the ball has lead to a ridiculous amount of double plays without offsetting 3 run shots. I suggested this in an earlier Mauer thread, while others stated the stats weren't there. Well, they're there now. Most of Mauer's HR in prior years came to straight away center or left. His first home run in Target Field was a bomb into the trees in center. He's lost the power to go center or oppo. He's in trouble.

    Gaining an extra five wins from the bottom of the rotation means just as much as getting an extra five from the front, unless you're talking playoffs. Getting more production from the back is certainly a lot cheaper, but it also requires making the right choices among a number of similar options. Which is why this is important to get right. Regarding those who assume Milone will not be part of the long-term future, Soft-tossing lefties can be very effective and often pitch into their 40's. I compared Milone to Buehrle in another thread awhile back. Very similar beginnings to their careers although Buehrle debuted much younger. If Milone blossoms into a Buehrle or Kenny Rogers, wouldn't we be wise to consider keeping him? Put another way, if you had to bet actual money on who would be better over the next 5 years: Milone or May, who gets the nod?
