  1. I like Sano and Florimon side by side, with Escobar backing up 3B, SS, and 2B. Both Florimon and Escobar can still pick it up a notch as hitters with more major league PA's. We may get our SS of the future as early as the 2014 draft and I see Polanco as our future utility infielder, but we can contend with what we have.
  2. I think it's safe to say, the Twins will not be adding 2 starting pitchers with 4-5 year contracts, and even safer to say you can not always trade them. As is, I believe our farm system will take care of our starting pitching needs no later than 2017. I look for us to add several mid-range free agents with 2-3 year contracts. If Ryan pulls a rabbit out of his hat, it will be a trade involving some of our prospects in the 5-15 range.
  3. Ryan Eades is probably as close to a can't miss starting pitcher prospect as the Twins have. Top baseball prospect in Louisiana in 2008. Cape Cod pitcher of the year in 2011. Number 2 starter on one of the top college programs in 2012 and 2013. Both years he was behind a current or future first round draft choice. Due to a long college season and being a workhorse, he was essentially shut down after being drafted. He wasn't allowed to start and innings were limited. In comparison, Meyer never pitched an inning after being drafted. The Twins had him rated higher than any other 2nd round pick.
  4. IIRC selling or contracting the Twins offered substantial estate tax saving. The Twins while mired in the Dome were a borderline profitable enterprise, soon facing substantial operational losses, with no other local group stepping up to purchase the team. As I heard it, family members convinced Carl Pohlad to retain ownership. I know I will be forever grateful to the Pohlads for keeping the Twins in Minnesota during my lifetime.
  5. I read an article recently where a Hennepin County official talked about how pleased they were with partnering with the Pohlads in building Target Field. He talked about how they took basically a useless piece of property, in what he called a boundary area and built beautiful Target Field. You do know the Twins attract more visitors to Downtown Minneapolis than all the other sports teams in town combined right?
  6. In fact, that's the way they do it. An article posted here sometime ago, quoted Jim Pohlad as saying 50% of revenue would be used for payroll on average. When the Pohlads donated $2,000,000 to help build the new baseball field at my alma mater, we didn't feel they were disgraceful at all.
  7. Ryan always overvalues his players.
  8. Good job Alex you found the right articles. I like what Theo said about offense and the types of players he goes after also. He clearly has a plan and he does explain it well. I believe rebuilding requires the 2nd, 4th, and 5th draft picks consecutively.
  9. Tons. Google Theo Epstein once a week like I do. Don't read the ones where they wonder if his wife is Jewish.
  10. Nice 1st post! I thought about Hochevar also, and if he can start, why not take a shot. If he's a relief pitcher, I believe we have more of the same at a lot less money. I like Corey Hart and always have. He would be a good Twin.
  11. If you listen to Theo, Ryan sounds like a visionary. Theo in his own words is transparent, and much slicker, but he's using more or less the same process as Ryan. Seth recently posted, Ryan told him he would not take shortcuts. I don't know how he could have made it clearer than that. Ryan being human is going to make mistakes, and there are plenty of areas he can legitimately be criticized for, but the fact of the matter is you can not rebuild a mid-market Major League baseball team in 23 months.
  12. I agree with you and forgot about Oliveros. I like the additions of Welker and Mark Hamburger.
  13. You make a very good point. The Royals rebuild for 7 years, IMO they panicked and made a premature trade, now they maybe looking at being one and done. Edit: Zimmer had 18 innings at AA last season, and Ventura made 3 September starts totaling 15 innings.
  14. IMO you always go with the BPA and I wouldn't mind either a SS or starting pitcher. Very good news the farm may be dominated by pitching, I didn't see this coming. I would definitely include Eades, and hope Wimmers can pitch himself back into the picture. Believe he will start at AA. Once again, I appreciate it, always nice to receive good news.
  15. Who cares where the players come from? Ryan is trying to rebuild a baseball team, not take credit. It's far from a given that the Twins will lose 96+ games next season and he's constantly at work improving the team as are all GM's. It's like Theo recently said, you don't have 4 drafts a year and signing free agents is not just putting an "X" in the box. Maybe it would be best to wait until ST to make predictions on whether the team is improved. No one said it was acceptable, but it certainly is natural for a mid-market team, 23 months into a rebuild to be losing. The Twins are not the first team in to be in a rebuilding mode.
  16. You don't need to sign marquee free agents to win consistently, nor are they one of the primary talent acquisition methods/sources. It's the market of last resort to all GM's. Also, the free agent market is not made up of marquee free agents and dumpster diving. There is plenty of room in between which he consistently works. On a scale of 1 to 100, I would give a 2 on his chances to end his career a failure. He's been back 23 months.
  17. I would have supported the Brewers and started going to Gopher baseball games again.
  18. Can you confirm your theory that the Twins have the 3rd or 4th most money to spend in Free Agency in all of baseball?
  19. I agree there is always a walk away price. In a year or so, he would be at best our 4th best player and we can get a better starting pitcher in the deep 2014 draft. Also, Stewart is more highly rated, and maybe Meyer.
  20. As a group, I'm really not counting on these players. We already know the names of The Hammer's and Doumit's replacements. I'm hoping for a Butera type return when they're traded. Burton can be replaced from a deep group of relievers. Pelfrey/Diamond/Worley, we need one to give us a Correia type season. Much more important that Gibson and Hicks show signs of their promise.
  21. I think you're very close. I see the Yankees or Dodgers.
  22. Theo basically said the same thing in a recent interview. An interviewer asked Theo if the Feldman deals were a preview of future strategic moves, and he let him know that was not the case, it was just how it ended up.
  23. RB, you're probably right. I've been conditioned to where when I hear shoulder surgery, I cross the name off the list and go to the next warm body.
  24. I agree with the OP, that one out three "can't miss" starting pitching prospects ends up being a solid Major League starter and that is the area of the rebuild I'm uncomfortable with. I don't believe Ryan is anywhere near done accumulating starting pitching prospects and hope the Butera trade is a sign of things to come. As far as trading prospects for starting pitching, I believe it's too early, but Ryan recently inferred the Twins have few if any untouchables, which is as it should be. IMO the only thing that can hold us up is starting pitching.
  25. I can't even think about Coach Kill and staff at this time. Not a happy day on the Gopher Board. I would trade Plouffe this winter if at all possible and go with Escobar until Sano arrives. I've seen enough and have never bought the super utility role. I like Correia. Doesn't anyone grade on a curve anymore? RB, those were good words. I know nothing about epilepsy.
