  1. Thorpe is pie in the sky. He would be a high school senior right now. He may make it to Target Field by 2017 at the earliest. We still have the 2014 draft to replenish and if we go starting pitcher, it will be a higher rated prospect. IMO Dombrowski, King Theo, and our very own Terry Ryan are just as capable as Beane.
  2. Most top of the rotation starters want albatross contracts and will not be 26 when 2014 starts. I wouldn't think Tommy John and a fractured foot are going to scare off suitors and as far as I know he could pitch today if needed. Find me a cheaper #2-#3 with this much upside, who we know is available. I wouldn't give up Arcia w/o an extension, but could see starting a package with Berrios and Thorpe as currently contracted. You rarely find these type of guys available at 26.
  3. Gibson was a top 10-15 prospect in the 2009 draft. He fell because of a stress fracture in his forearm much to everyone's surprise. He pitched all of 51 innings in the majors the first year back from Tommy John. Ryan is not concerned, no reason we should be. Kind of like Ryan Eades first 15 innings in Rookie Ball. Much ado about nothing.
  4. Moneyball won't take a power hitter in decline coming off a poor season, a good Class A power prospect w/o a position, and a borderline starting pitching prospect for a 25 year-old lefty #2-#3. Garza is the only #2 in free agency and he is going to fetch 5 years for 85M-100M.
  5. It looks to me Arcia would be the best fit. Since it appears Anderson is ready to pitch right now, would you trade 25 HR's and .280 for a lefthanded #2-#3? I would only make the deal with a 3+1 year extension. Tough call.
  6. IMO the Twins have the right amount of starting pitching depth in the minors. As a rule of thumb, it takes 3 top starting pitching prospects to yield 1 solid major league starter. I don't see an excess. In the future I could see us having an excess of relief pitchers, but there is little demand. MI you take out Polanco and we're short. 1B is a catchall, like every other team. I do believe after the June draft and another half season of development of our top prospects at a higher level, the picture will be clearer. I'm very interested in seeing how our farm system and our top 10-20 prospects stack up after the draft. When we do open the farm up, I'm guessing it will be for a starting pitching, better than what we currently have to be our #1 starter come 2015.
  7. Completely agree. I'll never understand why Ryan and the guys don't know enough to trade the prospects who are going to fail and only keep those who are going to succeed. IIRC we even had a tread on Benson where the board was certain he was nothing but a stiff. Why didn't we get a Jamie Carroll type return so we could use all that money on Tanaka's posting fee? Where is the accountability?
  8. This is the opposite of The Twin's Way. Incidentally, King Theo recently coined the term "The Cubs Way". It sounds like it's startlingly familiar. Mike, I wouldn't say genius. I think the lesser of two evils is more appropriate.
  9. I'm sure they will enter the Tanaka sweepstakes, but lose mostly likely the to the Yankees. No way they will pursue albatross contracts with Santana/Garza. Ryan recently said it's unlikely he will use his prospects. If they do pursue another free agent starter, I believe they will wait the market out and make a Pelfrey type signing.
  10. 1. The main indictment is of those Twins fans regarding their past blind defense and creative excuse making.... 2. Had more of these fans joined the rest of us.... 3. no thanks to complacent or complicit ticket buying fans...
  11. I'm no scout but Gonsalves has a very big windup. Lots of arms and legs, and moving parts. I think he's a top prospect, but not a fast riser. I would be surprised if he's not a one level a year guy, which is just fine.
  12. No, that's been the national media and us.
  13. I could be wrong, but I would guess the Twins have pretty well set their pecking order for starting pitchers and will, over time clear out any excess. They did this a number of years ago where they only had 12-13 at ST. I do expect other small moves, and wouldn't be surprised if Diamond, Worley, or Denuno are traded because they are out of options or ST performance. I think Kris Johnson is set. First Scout spent 4 days in Indianapolis working the Morneau trade and Johnson is the lefthanded starting pitcher he ultimately ended up with and has 3 options. Len III said just before he left, he was looking for starting pitching that could debut at Target Field in 2014.
  14. He's a top of the rotation guy when healthy. People talk about them like they grow on trees, and here's a real live one. Recently Ryan has been quoted as saying he won't use his prospects and I don't disagree with that, but I do believe a buy low, top of the rotation lefty is worthy of discussion.
  15. It's set high enough. The way a team improves is by getting better. We will be better next season.
  16. Top of the rotation, buy low, and lefty. This is where you open the farm and are glad you didn't waste money on the Cubans so you can use it now.
  17. Brock, I agree we don't have to settle all the issues this winter, but let's anyway. Should we open up the farm to trade for Hanigan, then go for the jugular and get Brett Anderson?
  18. I wonder if this is a salary dump. I know at one time they were close to the luxury cap. Detroit's GM is one of the best traders in baseball and this makes little sense for a win now team. BA discusses the trade. Krol allows them to move another lefty to the rotation. So Detroit got a solid utility player, a young power lefty as a set up man, and a potential 3-4 starter with a very good second half season in AA.
  19. You can google 2 or 3 scouting reports which project Arcia as no worse than an average outfielder. The Twins don't seem concerned.
  20. I don't have a problem with any of the catchers mentioned, but I would sign Salty for 3 years. It's near impossible to find a catcher with his power, and he can also DH. With what we watched the last two seasons, the least of my concerns is someone being blocked. If we end up with two good hitting catchers, so be it.
  21. I don't disagree with you. The Loveable Losers were a little more open and honest. They said roughly, they would not bow down to pressure from their fan base and press the fast forward button. That which they will receive, is well worth waiting for. King Theo and First Scout know to successfully rebuild you need a series of high draft picks.
  22. Would you be satisfied if he gave the 4th and 5th draft picks back?
  23. I think you're so close it's scary, but I'm going to nit pick anyway. I would go Bailey/Hellickson/Anderson at the top spot in 2015 and flip flop Eades and Berrios.
  24. Either one is fine with me. It doesn't appear 1's and 2's are going to start growing on trees anytime soon. We start 2015 with Nolasco a 3, Meyer 2-3, Gibson 3-4. Ryan has 15 months, a great deal of gold, and many fine prospects to deal. I think either Arroyo or Hughes puts us ahead of the game.
