  1. You never know what makes it click for a young prospect that just isn't working out. Sometimes they need that extra motivation of being sent back down or waived and claimed by another team... I say give it a shot, worst case scenario you end up with a better AAA pitcher than you had before. There's other roster spots that could be worth opening up as well as Colabellos spot was...
  2. I think the point is this may be more of a buyers market than most years which also raises the likelihood of getting more than a Nolasco/Correia/Pelfrey type. I'm encouraged enough by the number of "Quality" pitchers out there that I won't get hung up on the "Who's an ace" side bar. Thanks Torihammer!
  3. I do not remember the source of the numbers or exact numbers at all but I do remember there being a long discussion on TD about payroll as a % of revenue last Fall and when all things were factored in, Ryan's budget was in the 110-120 range. Pohlad said he wanted Ryan to spend more last off season than he did and Ryan has pushed the idea that he tried to spend more last off season. All that to say I don't think the recent payroll has anything to do with determining payroll constraints this year. I believe Ryan has the green light to go North of 100 million and possibly even to 110-120 range. Sports fact. Winning teams usually fill seats (South Florida teams always an exception) Pohlad wants his seats filled. Fan favorite names like Hunter will do that also but only for a short time if we keep losing. They know this and want to improve the starting pitching. Ryan has been pretty consistent over the years of signing positions he said were needs. We will get a starter this offseason. The question really is how will we acquire that SP. Trade? Big Name free agent? Reclamation project? There is our angst, not the payroll.
  4. I expect Mientkiewicz and Jake Mauer to both move up some rungs
  5. I'm not sure if you'd call it a breakout or a rebound but Eddie Rosario could be This years Santana in a position we really need it.
  6. I think you nailed the source of Gardys struggles as a manager too! Now that Moly.... Er....Molitor has taken maybe Mauersy...er....Mauer will rebound and Pelfsy....er...Pelfrey will pitch like a major leaguer. Gardy made all the names vanilla and boring leading to the slide as a franchise
  7. Lock him up. I agree with the front loading of the deal. With that said... Front load it even more and maybe go 8 years
  8. No, his greatest long term value is if Sano is 3B of the future and Plouffes tradability which is not enhanced by this contract. My hope is that he is a mid season trade July '15 to a contender and brings back a piece we need to make our '16 run for the pennant
  9. Very interesting write up on some under followed minor leaguers. Seeing Haar on the list means Sano missed the season though... Just keeping it honest on that one...
  10. Seth, can you give us a scouting report on Danny Ortiz? He has put up respectable though unspectacular numbers that seem to be an upgrade over some of the MLB outfield numbers we have seen. He was a 4th rounder which is again respectable. What keeps him off the prospect lists or from contending for a spot next spring?
  11. what strikes me most about the positive comments about Molitor has been the consistency over years. People have been making comments about his great baseball mind for over a decade now so there must be something to all the recent comments as well.
  12. Would love to hear from bigger MLB level guys than Colabello but both here and other places I have read a lot of people saying "best baseball mind" I ever met
  13. So how about we sign a free agent outfielder and package Pinto with Hicks for a SP. Need another OF? Rosario shores it up short term, Buxton is long term answer. Free agent outfielder just might be mid season trade bait or Schaffer just might be gone!
  14. We think we know the manager now so who will he and Ryan hire? Here's a few thoughts/ options. Feel free to discuss my options and destroy my suggestions, fill in the coaching positions I left open and add your own suggested coaches. For the love of God though, please don't bring the pros and cons of hiring Molitor into this thread...thats a different thread. Bench: Ozzie Guillen- Latin bench voice that has managed and can be a resource for a rookie manager Pitching: Bert Blyleven- He's been managing the Dutch national team which has done surprisingly well and he will tell the young pitchers like it is. He is an insider so to speak but he definitely has his own mind and isn't a yes man. Hitting: Tom Brunansky- Young hitters were not afraid to pull the ball with him as a coach. I think Joe Mauer could benefit from some more time with him. First Base: Gene Glynn- He has earned a spot up here. Another good resource for Molitor and a reward for job well done up to this point. Bullpen: Bobby Cuellar- I am all for cleaning house but all the other peoples positive comments about Cuellar have me bringing him back. Still open: Third Base Coach Infield Coach- Vavra's job this past year Outfield Coach- Ullger's job this past year Assistant Bench/Base Running Coach- Molitors previous job
  15. I like the Molitor hire because he seems to be different from Gardy in all the right ways. He's not afraid of the over shift, and he uses saber metrics while still believing in good fundamental baseball. Most of all, he comes in with an open mind about who the coaches around him could be.
  16. Backing up my statement, Mauer and Morneau both skipped AAA though Morneau visited Rochester after time with the Twins, Parmalee also was not to Rochester until after his first Twins tryout, Arcia and Vargas both skipped AAA and Polanco has already had his sip of coffee coming up from A before even AA. Pinto only had 19 AAA games before his September call up and Santana barely got to Rochester this year before coming up.
  17. Actually, over the last few years the Twins have shown a habit of skipping AAA more often than not with positional prospects. With pitchers this is true but Not position players
  18. Let's go back to the Red Herring concept... In the dome our great players moved elsewhere for their big pay days (Hunter for eg.) and when we built Target field we gave Mauer AND Morneau the big pay days to keep them only to see concussions blow up both their careers. Nobody else has come up in the system WORTH paying since then causing payroll to go down. Teams that spend big in free agency tend to lose big in free agency (I would love to see the percentages on big time free agents that pay off vs regress) so I see this as a non topic and won't even look at responses to this post. Let's move on...
  19. Gardy, Inside man who played for the Mets? I think all this inside/Outside the organization is nonsense. Either they are good coaches or they are not. That is all that really matters.
  20. Thanks, answers the question mostly. You did leave off Milone who has to also be considered as a potential rotation member and probably above Pelfrey AND Nolasco base don AL tack record. Part of my point though was 14 million a year for an outfielder would not harm short or long term prospects or interfere with signing an Ace to 20 million a year. The Twins budget has the room for both easily.
  21. All these people quote team ERA ranked 28-30th and demand improvement. Asking an honest question here, is that season long team ERA which includes guys that are no longer starters or August September ERA which still includes some starts by guys that won't be starting next year. In my opinion, we had a rookie May, that began poorly but showed improvement and Milone with a veteran AL track record of decency but was miserable for us in a small sample size the last two months which skews the end of season look... Without getting into the numbers or facts to back up my opinion, it just seems to me that the discussion about how badly the rotation needs improvement is overblown some( not completely, just some) based on starters we actually have at the end of the year. Back on topic, we need an outfielder and have plenty of revenue. Sign Tomas and if you can get a top flight ace for 3-4 years, do that also. Honestly, we can afford it cuz everyone else on the roster is affordable enough for long enough to not over tax the revenue streams the next few years.
  22. First of all, Gardy on the job 13 years, Ryan 3 years. Secondly, I stated this opinion months ago and it remains the same: 2011 Bill Smith is blamed and fired. 2012 still blaming Smith. No improvement in 2013, blame the players for lack of improvement. 2014 blame the manager and coaching for lack of improvement (oor at least enough improvement) and 2015 you blame the GM. It's the natural progression. I don't see him off the hook, I see him at the end of his leash and next year better be different or he's next.
  23. Is it too late to vote?
  24. Good question...
