    Thanks. You mentioned defensive versatility several times, but what are the positions where people think he's most likely to contribute?

    OK, first we have to get the Marlins management team somewhere where they catch malaria. Then when they get the night-sweat fever dreams, we trade them Larnach for Luzardo, all the while whispering "sign it, this is only a dream". Other than that, no chance. How many teams would top that offer for Luzardo? Ten? Twenty?

    "Modern Twins fans might be interested to learn that Baseball Reference lists Jacque Jones and Eddie Rosario as two of the ten most similar players to Hisle. That comparison should give recent fans an idea of Hisle’s baseball abilities." I think that wildly understates Hisle's abilities- I really don't get how BR could make that reference, unless it was listing Twins outfielders. Hisle was a much better hitter with a much better peak, especially looking at his Twins years. Hisle: a six-year stretch (5 Twins, 1 Brewers) of OPS+ ranging from 114 to 153, with an average of 133. His worst year was 111. Four of the six years were over 130. Career: 123 Rosario: his best streak was four years ranging between 107 and 119 (his best year ever). His best stretch was 33 games with the Braves when he had 134, but his total for the full year was 99. Career: 100. Gedouttahere. Jones: best year ever was 123 (Hisle's career average). Next-best was 108. Career: 98. Seriously? Larry Hisle had a really, really good stretch of six years as a very good major league hitter. I'll wait for the Rosario Fan Club to remind me of Eddie's occasional great plays, neglecting to list his various throws to the wrong base/dugout. All three of them were respectable outfielders- Hisle might have been a little lighter in the field, but the bat played really well for a long time. I don't get that BR comp at all.

    Was there really an MVP on a team that was barely above .500? A team that badly underperformed when it mattered the most? Correa had a great half-year, but it was a half-year. Jax pitched 70 innings. Are you going to argue Castro had a better than sort of good year? We had guys with great stretches. Somebody wins a participation trophy. I honestly don't see much to celebrate this year. Oh wait, Buxton played a hundred games! Definitely gets a participation trophy. Just a whole lot of disappointment here. OK, at least this isn't as bad as the year Ron Coomer was our All-Star, I'll give you that. I'm not usually very negative, have never even called the Pohlads cheap or Rocco an idiot, but this was a devastatingly disappointing season. I don't see much valuable about anyone in 2024. Without Correa (for the whole year instead of just half) we would have...also missed the playoffs. Even the White Sox can pick an MVP, that doesn't mean it automatically has to be celebrated.

    Why We Picked Carlos Correa as Twins 2024 MVP Because we won when he played and we lost when he didn't, and well, frankly, we just didn't really have anybody else who played the whole year who was all that good.

    OK, to be fair, Mrs. Pohlad apparently dearly loved the Twins. It was even mentioned prominently in her obituary, as well as in coverage of the WS wins. Let's not get too deep into hyperbole here.

    I remember that game in 1984. The team was mostly young guys, trying to figure out how to hold it together. One of my favorite quotes ever from Gary Gaetti, who had a bad game: "It's hard to throw to first with both hands around your throat." This team has a bunch of guys who could say the same thing about hitting with runners on base, I guess.

    Looking forward to either plenty of changes to this team, or having a lot more free time next summer. Either is ok with me. I will not accept the status quo.

    At this point I just have to assume that Margot has some sort of blackmail going on over one of the Pohlads. There is just no other explanation.

    Tony Fiore, Twins 2002- 10 W, 3 L, 91 IP. No saves. ERA 3.16 FIP 4.76 He finished 8th in ROY voting, at age 30. The next year he pitched 36 innings, was sent to the minors and never returned, washing out in three other organizations before retiring. One of the great one-year wonders.

    This is the most disappointing season for me in my baseball life, which covers nearly 60 years of Twins baseball. And there have been some doozies. It wont be the most crushing playoff loss, though. If they win a game it will be a surprise. Every game, something crucial breaks down. Well, unless everything breaks down.

    I think you mean his WS pinch-hitting was 1-2 with a double and two walks. I remember him as a better than average fielder with the Twins, maybe that’s not right. I know he was not a good fielder with NY but that was after his pretty severe back injury. I don’t think he ever really fully recovered from that. Thanks for the article. I enjoyed watching him play and was glad he helped out in the WS.

    Yeah, I was thinking this article could be something like "21 Players With Something to Prove". RB, are all 5 pizza places actually in North Dakota? My news feed usually includes a three-state area in articles like that. I guess at least this didn't include any Brewers with something to prove.

    That's what it would seem like to me, though it sounds like it was for more than one pitcher. Hard to believe he thought he would get away with it- very much a self-sabotage. I hope he can improve his mental state.

    Might as well fire Popkins? The trainers? Or ride it out, hope for the best and hope the poor Pohlads hit the lottery this winter so the team can upgrade a few spots.

    And to some degree they are also lucky beasts. Mike Trout's certainly a beast, and he's lasted a lot longer than average...not very lucky, though. Or is he just "soft"?

    Well, that would be ideal. Sometimes it doesn't work. Tony Oliva DH'd on one leg for three full years (1973-75) with the Twins. The general feeling was he had to hit a double in order to get to first base safely, which was only somewhat of an exaggeration. That seems ridiculous, but he did put up an OPS+ of 109 his first two years and 103 his third. Low for a DH, but perhaps better than anyone else the Twins had on the bench at the time. Bobby Darwin played RF with an OPS+ of 94 in 1973. Four guys played over 100 games in 1974 with a lower OPS+, including Harmon at 90. They pretty clearly didn't have healthy replacements better than Tony, so he DHd. Not ideal at all, but if you think the Pohlad payroll restrictions are nothing compared to the Calvin Griffith payroll restrictions.

    True, but it would also be unprecedented in the history of baseball (at least the modern era).

    And yet people still argue that players who sit out are "too soft" and should suck it up. If you're so hurt you can't perform well, you're hurt. Quit hurting the team more by trying to play. This isn't difficult.

    Geez did you see that throw by Wallner? Got out of the stands and threw it nearly to the infield- flat-footed.
