    Yeah I love the deal. I don't get why people don't like it. He's clearly better than our worst reliever, and for net prospects exchanged, we gave up very little. I think people are letting perfect be the enemy of good. If this is all they get, it's not enough and they should be ripped. But that's independent of THIS trade. This trade in no way prevents them from continuing to improve the roster.

    It might be, it might not be. Those numbers alone don't give enough context. Theoretically a pitcher could have an 18.00 ERA and be perfect in save opportunities.

    Any reason you left off the rest of the sentence? The part that gives it it's context? How plugged in are you to dispute whether or not they've been aggressive "in their pursuit of upgrades"?

    As the third or fourth best deadline pickup? Yes. He improves our bullpen. He does so more by lifting the floor rather than the ceiling, but there is still plenty of time to get a couple of better pitchers.

    Three guys can't take one roster spot though, so you have to predict which one of the three is going to outpitch him. Which one will it be?

    Marlins 23rd ranked prospect, Chris Valliant is the pitcher we're getting back. He's their 5th round pick from 2018. Good fastball and slider, questionable control. Looks like a decent lottery ticket. We're also getting back a PTBNL.

    Jon Morosi is reporting that the Twins are receiving a milb pitcher in the deal, not sending one.

    The Mets and Padres, both 7 games under .500 are considering BUYING? That would make for a bizarre trade deadline.

    Well thanks a lot for that. Now I need to dig out my Men In Black memory eraser and rid this from my mind again.

    A backup in MLB, or AA? He has a career .573 milb OPS. For perspective, that's 60 points lower than Drew Butera had in the minors. That would likely equate to about a .495 MLB OPS.

    Incredibly disappointed. I come here as much for the discussions about real life issues as I do for the sports, sports, sports, is your whole life just sports discussion. This will defintely result in less participation for me. It saddens me that people couldn't moderate themselves, but given our current political climate, not surprising, I guess. I understand the moderators do a lot of work for little or no pay, so I can't fault the decision if it's becoming too much.

    I think that's the right decision, if true. I'm all for second chances. Not so much third chances, though. You can't risk a situation where you're going into December, he gets popped again, the trade deadline has passed, and you're screwed.

    I agree. Berrios isn't quite an ace yet, but if he wants to become one, this is where aces step up and take over a game.

    Only in the short term. In the long term, the guy who performs when called upon is going to earn a ton more than the guy who is just hanging around in case of a blowout. So maybe a little unfair if Smeltzer has a loan shark threatening to break his thumbs if he can't pay up by next week. Otherwise, he's going to earn far more from the Twins, long term, than Torres will.

    I'm willing to refrain from overreacted to the Yankees series, so long as this team takes care of business against the Sox. Every team has ups and downs, and the team earned the big cushion they had early. But now that cushion is gone, and they have some bad teams on the schedule. Anything less than 3 of 4 will be a pretty big failure, IMO.

    There is nothing gained by keeping Smeltzer up. He pitched 5 innings yesterday, so he's likely unavailable until Monday. He's earned an extended audition, he'll be back when his 10 days are up. This is in no way a punishment.

    If I remember right, a hot young pitching prospect named Kershaw was also possibly on the table. Perhaps that was bad reporting or I'm misremembering, but if he was, that's an awful miss.

    Which underlying stats am I supposed to look at? His k rate is career low, his bb and hit rate are career high, and his FIP is career worst by a lot. I'd still like to get him, with the assumption that the Mets are such a mess that they are doing something wrong, but the underlying stats I looked at aren't fine.

    Navarreto isn't a catching prospect. He's organizational filler. If someone got confused and offered even the remotest of prospects for him, they'd have taken it instead of the cash.
