I think we're largely in agreement on these veterans values. I don't think they're stars. But we know Bader is actually a plus defender (Hernandez probably isn't anymore) and he's still likely a better hitter. I wouldn't want to pay him $10 M but the market doesn't seem to think it is either. But $5-8 million is a more than fair salary for someone of Bader's skills, and especially for a team like the Twins who will almost certainly need 80+ starts in CF from their backup CF. An actual contender would have a solid "4th OF". A pretender will use Keirsey instead. I think Jose Iglesias epitomizes the undervaluing of Veteran players that can still play premium defense. No one should expect him to duplicate his success with the bat last season, but he's still a premium glove at 2B and passable at SS and 3B. Defense doesn't slump and you can get lucky and get a truly team changing spark plug like Candelita was last season. IF Keirsey was as good with the glove as some here think, I am all for him being a major leaguer. I just haven't seen it and the supporting evidence isn't there for me to believe it yet.

Keirsey is really interesting. We've heard good things about his defense, but those reports are from the same people that said Austin Martin was looking great in the OF. I didn't see enough of him to get any sort of read on him last year. I tend to believe he's going tend to be more of an average to below average CF just based on the vibes I'm picking up. If he were truly a great CF he wouldn't have been sent back to AA after 2022 (unless the Twins are truly incompetent which...is more than possible). That, paired with a 650 OPS, isn't really a great plan for CF when Buxton inevitably misses 80+ games. Not for a team that has aspirations of being a contender anyway. If they were truly serious about being a contender they'd bring in an actual backup CF like Bader or Hernandez, but we all know the billionaires don't have the money for that.

Not so, I love most of the pitching, except Woods Richardson but not really alone in that. And I do think Carlos Correa is very good and ultimately worth his contract. I just think it's not really worth it for a team on a tight budget, hampering a team that is well short of being a contender from improving. Someone's an optimist...

The Time for "Getting Creative" Is Upon Us

Do you really think the Pohlad Twins are gonna pay $25 million in 2025 for Pete Alonso? -
Forgive me, but I just don't have any faith in the instincts of the manager that coached Manuel Margot to an MLB record of futility. Only reason he wasn't fired is probably because they want to give the new hiring opportunity to new ownership.

I see that you've never seen me discuss Wallner :-) The article asserts that he has the skills to be a good CFer and I, and many others, vehemently disagree. Possessing speed isn't sufficient to be a good CFer, and Austin Martin isn't even that much of a speedster to begin with. If he was struggling with reads and reactions after 1000 innings in the OF, you have to have a lot of faith to think an extra 100 innings in Spring Training is going to be enough to finally get it.
-
Not a chance. If he ultimately settles for a 1 year deal it will probably be an effective 1 year deal with player options, looking in structure like the Bellinger contract. Maybe with more drastic declines in salary. Something like, perhaps - Year 1: $28 M Year 2: $23 M Year 3: $18 M A clean 1 year deal is not likely and would for sure be more than $25 M.

Not to mention, at a certain point the blame is on the player. Austin Martin has been at least a part time OF since he started playing collegiate ball, with the exception of one of those 3 seasons. He hasn't been able to get OF reps in during those 6 years? He busy or something? Now that he's 26 we're supposed to believe he'll finally be able to put it together? I said last season that he'll be lucky to get 1000 career PAs and I'm sticking with that. He has two more option years, so he's gonna bounce up and down and then end up on the Long Island Ducks or something like that. He's Luis Guillorme but without the glove.

The common response is a Salary Floor, but I'm with you. I think they'll, rightfully, explore expanding the revenue sharing. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see them put in requirements to dip into that revenue sharing pool either. The Athletics, Pirates, and Marlins have no business getting the $200 million check from MLB. Frankly, neither do the Twins right now though they're far from the biggest offender and we SHOULD expect to see a change in direction once ownership changes hands.

MLB needs a true salary cap so that we can reach levels of parity seen in the NFL. Wait a minute.

Yeah, Zips calling for 27 seems a lot more realistic. And I still might take the under.

Just saw a tweet really driving home how inactive this Twins Organization has been. Courtesy Brooksgate on the nazi's social media site: AL Central Teams in Free Agent Spending the last 2 Off-seasons Royals 13th overall - $117M Tigers 17th overall - $84M White Sox 21st overall - $58M Guardians 22nd overall - $57M Twins 29th overall - $8M

Whoa, whoa, whoa. How dare you? The 2020-2023 Mets were perhaps that, but they then hired, arguably, the best executive in baseball. David Stearns gonna lead my Mets to the promised land.

17 days until pitchers and catchers report, but we're 88 days since the start of the offseason. That means the Twins front office took a nice 70 day break if they're halfway through the offseason. Good for them!

There are also skills and instincts. And Martin showed none as an OF. Athleticism isn't enough to be a good major leaguer. His value is greatly diminished as strictly a mediocre middle infield backup and pinch runner now, but that's not cause Buxton wasn't inviting enough or whatever.

Agrree. The Twins Organization seems to be poor at evaluating player defensive skills. He's played more games at CF than any position. He's just bad. Time to stop making excuses for him.

It'd be incredibly foolish to pigeon hole players into a position right away. It is prudent that the team recognize early when a player will not be able to play a position and move them off it (like they failed to do with Austin Martin) but moving a player around the diamond is not hindering anyone's development. Austin Martin doesn't suck because he has played too many positions. He's been allowed to suck because the Twins failed to recognize he can't play OF but put him out there anyways. Likewise, it would have been completely foolish to move Lee off of SS if the team thought there was a chance to actually play the position at the major league level which talent evaluators thought was possible last summer. You don't intentionally lessen the value of your asset. But that presents an issue if that player hasn't been allowed to get reps at a certain position by the time they make the show and their best position is occupied. I really don't understand how anyone thinks Royce falling like a stone down the defensive spectrum is the Twins fault.
