  1. That's one good metric. OAA is another, but the one that I find so fascinating, probably since it's so easily understood, is outfield jump from Statcast. Thank you to which ever TD author wrote about that metric recently. Of the 180 OF last year that met a certain minimum, Wallner covered more ground than only 2 other outfielders. And that is consistent with 2023, where he was 177th out of 181. He must be a bit better at the catch point than some of those comparable outfielders, because he's not as quite bad as Yordan Alvarez or Kyle Schwarber. But he's definitely not covering much ground out there. Feet covered in 3 seconds: Bader, Harrison 35.8 Buxton, Byron 35.8 Castro, Willi 35.1 Kepler, Max 33.3 Margot, Manuel 33.2 Martin, Austin 32.3 Larnach, Trevor 31.7 Kirilloff, Alex 31.4 Wallner, Matt 29.2
  2. The assumed starting defense is really looking spotty. Let's not forget Buxton has lost a few steps and is now merely a good CF, bookended by an atrocious Wallner and a barely adequate Larnach.
  3. Helps that Kepler played good defense. If either Larnach or Wallner contributed defensively, they'd get a lot more play against LHP too. Plus, Larnach hasn't hit LHP since 2019. Wallner should get a chance, but Larnach? Literally couldn't give less of a ****. No. The shopped for a backup CF for when Buxton is injured half the season, that just so happens to bat right handed.
  4. Him playing SS is a bit of a stretch, but I'd say better than Castro and just based on his performance last season, a bit better than Lee. His hitting was absolutely a fluke and returned to normal in the end of the season and postseason. But he's still a very valuable middle infielder with good hands and a very high baseball IQ, not to mention the single best clubhouse guy in all of baseball last season. He was allegedly looking for a two year deal, but wasn't able to find one. Just this weekend he used the Boras journalist to print a story to all but beg to come back to the Mets. Don't think that's happening unless he's willing to settle for a split contract. He's an immensely likable player so I hope he finds something soon.
  5. It's not Bader's fault that Buxton is going to go down for half the season. Unless it is, but that would make for a really good 30 for 30 documentary.
  6. That'll happen when your starting CF perpetually misses half the season and the second best outfielder forgot how to approach a major league at bat and struck out in half his PAs to start the year. Harrison Bader will likely play 100+ games, and have 350-400 PAs. None of that changes the fact that he's almost certainly starting the season as the 4th OF.
  7. Just because you guys don't understand how much a major league 4th OF works, doesn't mean Bader isn't a 4th OF. The Yankees 4th OF, with probably the best OF in all of baseball last year, still played 69 games in the OF.
  8. Having 300 PAs is a lot for never facing them. Actually, you'll easily be able to tell the 4th OF. It's the one that, at the start of the season, isn't starting as many games. Why, in your mind, was he valuable in his career despite having a career OPS+ of only 87? He's a bad, awful hitter, comparable to Bader actually. Was it malfeasance to allow him to get over 10,000 plate appearances in his career?
  9. Rodriguez isn't going to be on the major league roster until at least June, if at all, so being concerned he's moving ahead of him on the depth chart is putting the cart before the horse. Plus, I'll note the AL Champions everyday LF had an 83 OPS+ last season. Bader, and his massively better defense, starting 30 games in LF isn't some travesty.
  10. Yep. Don't think that's happening. Which is only to say there's no chance he goes to the Twins on a minor league contract.
  11. He just was kept in the minors for SD i believe. He was doing good, not great. He and the Mets were lucky cause he wasn't all that great in AAA either when they called him up but all their middle infield depth was either hurt or massively underperformed. So hispersistence and consistency in AAA earned him another shot. The glove doesn't play well at SS but he was plus at 2B. He reportedly has a meeting with the Mets Monday. He was holding out for a 2 year deal but it didn't come so he looks like he's trying to get back the one year deal he passed on, unlikely. But there's no chance he takes a minor league deal elsewhere. He would leave for a one year deal though. But Stearns would gladly give him another minor league deal from the Mets.
  12. Not gonna leave the Mets for a minor league deal.
  13. And you can say you don't hate Bader all you want but when you and others are talking like this or lamenting the fact he can't be optioned, that's more telling. Man up and tell the truth if you hate the player. I think Austin Martin sucks and I'm obviously not shy about it.
  14. Correct. I get your frustration, and I don't know the reasons why, but the Twins haven't produced a good fielder since Buxton and Kepler. Larnach Wallner and Martin are all iffy to downright bad. There's no reason to think Keirsey was a plus defender in CF. Julien, Lewis, and even Lee (so far) all disappointments. Kiriloff and Miranda, oofda. You can wish they could but they haven't and while everyone else is discussing the reality of the current state of the organization, looking to the 2025 season, you're here talking as if they just wished harder everything would be roses and they wouldn't need to bring in a valuable player that improves the team.
  15. You people are so hyperfixated on half the game. Was Ozzie Smith a bad player in your eyes?
  16. And he's not hit lefties since 2019. Was Buxton the 4th OF last season? That tells you how dumb I think this question is. And I'm obviously guessing. Maybe it's 350. Maybe Buxton is incredibly healthy and it's 220. Why get fixated on this? Great. Let me know when OF no longer need to play the OF and then this is relevant.
  17. So his 300 PAs against LHP wasn't a chance and don't count? Pretty convenient. Sounds like you just don't understand the importance of a quality 4th OF in a 162 game season. Especially for a team that has a CF made of glass . Bader is solidly above replacement and this is a team that gave 250 PAs to the much worse player Austin Martin. There is plenty of playing time for Bader, and he improves the team.
  18. True. Just saying Eeles was better in almost every way last year. Exit velocity was a tick higher but hard hit % a bit lower. Contact was higher and way more patient. Was really disappointed with Lee's speed and arm last year too. Sadly, think he's kind of a dud that should have been traded before exposed. Not true all star potential but can prove to be a valuable starter still.
  19. If, like Larnach, you haven't hit lhp since 2019, when does it start to become concerning? You can cry about 50 PAs being too small a sample but when do you actually force the guy to actually perform? If he weren't also a bad fielder he'd get more chances I'm sure. Understated? No? He should probably play about 100 games and get 400 PAs. And if you think he was borderline replacement, well, you're just very wrong. If you're gonna reduce a baseball player exclusively down to OPS, we'll, you're not really appreciating the game man.
  20. I'm not even saying they shouldn't ever be allowed to face lefties. But there's a real chance that one or both of them continue to struggle. Especially with Larnach, when do you stop hoping that his 2019 AA splits are more telling of ability than the entirety of his MLB career? It's just a fact that in nearly 300 PAs against LHP Wallner and Larnach have hit a combined .182 with about a .550 OPS. And we don't need to pretend as if that's just going get better for both players if they see more LHP. I think I agree with most of the people here that Wallner deserves another chance to prove himself against them. But Larnach? I just really don't care if he sits in favor of the much better hitting and much, much better fielding Bader against them, even if it were on opening day or in a tough spot in the 5th inning. Especially since he's a pretty bad outfielder and baserunner as well.
  21. The more I look at him, the more I wish Eeles were in the proper camp battling for that spot. Unless his defense isn't up to snuff, I think he might be the best of the bunch being considered for the job, if we're under the impression Rocco prefers Castro to be able to move around the field. He's seemingly got better patience at the plate and contact skills than Martin or Lee, and at least comparable power to Lee. Lee obviously has more of that projection and promise, but Eeles might just be a better player. And Austin Martin is just easily the worst of the three. There's no way he'd be at all in contention if he wasn't a first round draft pick.
  22. The season is 162 games long. Pretending Bader starting a game against a lefty instead of career Larnach or Wallner with their combined career 550 OPS against lefties is some sort of travesty is just stupid. Trying to act as though career OPS+ 102 Larnach, or career 35% K rate Wallner, each with their bad outfield defense, are perfect players that must see 650 PAs and every inning in the field, again, is just stupid. There's plenty of playing time for all of Wallner, Larnach, Buxton, Bader, and probably some left over for Keirsey still, since he's still on the 40 man. And, yes, sadly even some, too much in fact, for the worst amongst them, Austin Martin.
  23. Probably neither. They would need to negotiate an extension right now in order for that to happen. Probably should be Jax since he's cheaper due to the arbitrary nature of the closers role. But I think he's less likely to stick with the organization than Duran, given that they have refused to let him try to play the position he clearly prefers. But, does it make sense for the Twins to even TRY to extend a pitcher past 32 right now? Probably not.
