I don't see how we can say Eisenreich was blocking Puckett. He had a health issue that took him out of baseball for a while. He debuted in '82 with a solid showing in 111 PA's, but in '83 he only had 8 PA's & '84 36 PA's. That isn't blocking anyone. Meanwhile, Puckett was in rookie ball in '82 & A ball in '83, he skipped a level & went to AAA in '84 & debuted the same season. If anything Puckett was fast tracked to MLB. The idea that players are blocked is exaggerated IMO. When a player is ready & plays well enough to force a promotion they'll get there chance.

The Twins need to get a top prospect for Ryan or don't trade him, it's simple. They can't settle for what other teams are willing to trade. They have the leverage & need to use it.

Certainly the Twins should be looking at all options & not focusing on one team or player. With that said I think the A's are a team that matches up very well with us. I'd love to see a package for DeVries & If the A's just won't trade him then a deal involving Soderstrom would work. Someone mentioned Walcott & the Rangers could be looking to add a starter so that may work as well. The Mariners are another team that is interesting & deal involving Ford would be good too.

If the Twins do nothing, which seems improbable, then the opening day roster could look like what is suggested in the article. The bottom line for me is until we know the direction the team is taking with Ryan & Lopez it's just guessing. If they move both of them then Jeffers is likely gone as well & maybe even Buxton. Then we know the full rebuild is moving forward. If they retain all 4 of those players they need to be all in on competing. This means adding at least two high leverage arms for the bullpen, a RH hitting utility player who consistently hits LHP & can play 1B(someone like Romy Gonzalez on Boston) or a FT 1B & Clemens is used in a utility role. They also need to add a second utility player who is a quality defender at SS or a starting SS & Lee is used as a utility player. Whether these moves are done through trade or Free agency doesn't matter they need to be done if they plan to compete. I've seen many people projecting wins for the 2026 Twins, which to me is almost impossible until we know the direction. One last comment - I hope they choose one or the other & go 100% in that direction. For me the worst scenario is to choose something in between. Unfortunately, that is what I think we'll see.

A Couple of Obscure but Interesting Facts about the 1981 Twins
MGX replied to Teflon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That 1981 season definitely provided some weird oddities because of the strike & the way it was handled/mishandled by MLB. For the Twins who were awful in the 1st half & yet were about .500 in the 2nd half, about 1/2 way into August which kept them in range of a playoff spot. Kansas City was bad in the 1st half (20-30) like the Twins & bounced back to win the 2nd half division title. The most unfortunate result of that strike & MLB's handling of it was the fact that the Cincinnati Reds had MLB's best record in 1981 & didn't make the playoffs because of the idea of having a divisional winner in each half. -
3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed. Things can change season to season with defensive numbers. My original point was if we're going to sign/trade a 1B I want to have some confidence they're going to be better than what we already have. I'm not sure Lowe is that guy, but maybe.- 36 replies

3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We could sign him & hope that happens, but his production has been declining for multiple seasons. Clemens has improved his productivity over multiple seasons. Last season was the 1st time he has 150+ PA's & he produced reasonably good results. Again, I'd like to the Twins get someone who forces Clemens into a utility role where IMO he can provide more value. I just don't see Mountcastle, with his declining power numbers, as that player.- 36 replies

3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No to the OF's for sure we have no need. For me it's also a no on Lowe. Lowe's splits - vs LHP - OPS - .504 & vs RHP - OPS - .762 Clemens splits - vs LHP - OPS - .482 & vs RHP - OPS - .782 Lowe was also well below average defensively while Clemens was well above average. Is Lowe really an improvement? I've seen other suggestions for Mountcastle which to me is even worse. Mountcastle splits - vs LHP - OPS - .598 & vs RHP - OPS .672 & ok defensively. It would be great if we could get someone to force Clemens into a utility role where he'd be more valuable to the team, but they should actually be an improvement & not signing someone hoping they will perform better.- 36 replies

Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
MGX replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could see it being more of a platoon situation with Jackson playing vs LHP which would free up Jeffers to play 1B/DH vs LHP. Either way Jackson likely won't get more than a couple hundred PA's. You may be right on Vazquez, he just doesn't offer much going forward. -
Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
MGX replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In 3 seasons with the Twins Vazquez posted an OPS+ of 64, 60 & 52, absolutely horrible. His first two seasons his defense was good, but last season even that fell off. No way should they have brought Vazquez back. They traded for Jackson to be a backup C, he's been solid defensively & showed signs of improvement at the plate last season. All of that at a lower salary than what Vazquez will likely get. For what it is, a backup Catcher, it's a good trade. -

How the Twins Can Win by Outdeveloping, Not Outspending
MGX replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Informative article. My takeaway is still that there is plenty of money to spend. Based on the numbers provided - $324M in revenue & $154M in payroll for 2025. It's also noted on average it's $20M for the coaching staff, so that's $174M leaving $150M to cover other expenses for the business. While I'm not qualified to guess what the other expenses in the business amount to, I have to imagine 2025 was a profitable season for the Twins. If that's the case why does it feel like we may be looking at a sub $100M payroll for 2026? If they could have $154M or even $140M for payroll they should be able to build a competitive & entertaining team. -
My post above was simply pointing out that just looking Batting Average gives you a limited view of a players production when compared to other stats like OPS, wOBA & wRC. If you disagree with that I don't know what to tell you. I don't need to research the fact that his production was lower in 2025, as I already stated that in one of my previous posts. It seems you've made up your mind on Wallner & that's fine it's your opinion.
-
I did say to this point he's been a more productive "offensive" player. Joey Gallo was a good defensive player I wouldn't say otherwise. With that said both are/were corner OF's, offense first positions. The main thing for Wallner is how productive he is as FT player. If he is producing an .800 OPS or better going forward, I'd rather have that with his D than the other way around. If he doesn't produce like that on offense than he won't be as good as Gallo.

Core or out the door 1. Cole Sands - Neither - For the 2026 team it wouldn't make any sense to trade Sands as we have plenty of spots to fill in the bullpen currently & his trade value would be very low. If he is to be a core contributor a big step forward is needed otherwise he'll be easily replaced. 2. Royce Lewis - Unsure - Trading him now would be selling low & 2026 gives him an opportunity to get his career back on track. This is a prove it season for Lewis. 3. Brooks Lee - Unsure - If he could be packaged in a deal to get us a SS then I'd trade him. It's hard to see him as part of the core going forward. He needs to improve his offensive production & find a defensive home, which I don't believe is SS. 4. Bailey Ober - Trade - He is the starter I'd be looking to trade. He has enough of track record to interest some teams & is very inexpensive. 5. Matt Wallner - Both - Along with Buxton they are the power source for this team. So far in his career vs RHP he has 767 PA's & slashed - .245/.362/.519 for .881 OPS with 44 HR's. In 2025, which was his least productive season overall, he was given 97 PA's vs LHP & he had a .790 OPS. As a full time player he has 35+ HR potential. I'm sure other teams see the potential so he could bring something really useful in a trade. Either way Wallner can provide value to this team.

Agree with you that Gallo had some good seasons & overall a productive career. Comparing their career numbers... Joey Gallo - 3043 PA's - .194/.319/.456 for a .775 OPS & as you said 14.9 WAR Matt Wallner - 972 PA's - .231/.344/.485 for a .829 OPS & 4.6 WAR To this point Wallner has been a more productive offensive player. Even in 2025 which was Wallner's least productive season he had a .776 OPS.
-
Admittedly, I was hoping we'd sign O'Hearn to play 1B & have Clemens in a utility role. At least with Clemens he played well defensively & he's consistently improved his offense throughout his career. Last season was the first season he's had 150+ PA's & he had his best season yet. With that said it was still below MLB average which is why I think he was better suited to a utility role. Hopefully, he takes another step forward because 1B is an offense first position & we really need above average production there.
-
Agree with this. If we're trying to win, Ryan O'Hearn would be a nice addition & Clemens would be a useful utility player. If we're rebuilding, then let Clemens play 1B until someone takes the position from him.
-
You may be right, I'm not sure what the value would be on Lopez. I know the Marlins need pitching badly as they were bottom 5 in runs allowed last year. With the other 4 teams at the bottom I didn't think we could get a SS from them (Rockies - Tovar, Nationals - Abrams, Angels - Neto & A's - Wilson). Depending on what would need to be added I'd do it. Lopez adds much improved D at both 2B & SS, speed & he was a productive hitter VS RHP. That would help cover SS in 2026 & still offers a lot of flexibility going forward.
-
This is inaccurate - OPS by month March/April - .348, May - .985, June - .625, July - .805, August - .536 & Sept./Oct - .770. With that said I'm hoping we sign an FA to play 1B (Ryan O'Hearn) as I think Clemens should be a utility player on this roster. Who are the kids that are going to play & learn? If they deserve a spot on the ML roster then they should be there if not they can continue developing in the minors until they have earned it.
