The offensive production didn't change much over the last two months. Over the course of the season the Twins averaged just over 4 runs/game, in the last two months they averaged just over 4 runs/game. Our bullpen was the issue & that's not a surprise when you look at who pitched - Erasmo Ramirez, Jose Urena, Genesis Cabrera, Brooks Kriske, Noah Davis, Thomas Hatch, Travis Adams, Pierson Ohl, Michael Tonkin, Sands & Topa.

James Outman, Out of Options, Out of a Job? Probably Not.
MGX replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I follow both the Twins & the Dodgers & when Outman came up in '23 he did well, but continued to strikeout at a high rate. His strikeout rates have increased to even higher rates, just doesn't make enough contact. The Dodgers AAA team plays in the PCL, & offensive numbers are always inflated from that league. You can't disregard the numbers, but I always look at what the player AA as well if they played in the PCL. The bottom line is I don't see how Outman makes the Opening day roster unless he somehow corrects his strikeout problems (2024 - 35.3% & 2025 - 42.6%) while continuing to hit the ball out of the park at a decent rate. Highly unlikely IMO. -
The 57 win clip after the deadline is kind of meaningless considering who pitched for the Twins out of the bullpen. I'm not saying I think they are or aren't an 80 win team right now, but Fangraphs projected an 82 win team & while I don't agree with that completely the biggest discrepancy I saw was Brooks Lee whom they have as the starting SS & earning 2 WAR. Even if he is at 0 WAR & there off on a couple others they still likely project to a 75-80 win team currently.

So trade a starter who is clearly part of our rotation & was the best pitcher on the staff in September for a prospect who has proven nothing at the MLB level & has suffered multiple leg injuries over the past couple of seasons when one of his primary sources of value is athleticism, No thanks.

In my payroll blueprint O'Hearn is the 1B I wanted for the following reasons... - Good defensive 1B - Most importantly, no need to platoon as he handles LHP. - Frees up Clemens to be a utility player where IMO he provides the most value to the team. I'd really like to O'Hearn as our 1B. One interesting note is O'Hearn did very little until his age 29 season primarily because of lack of opportunity, but has been very good since. Clemens did very little until his age 29 season primarily because of lack of opportunity & then had a solid season. There are other similarities as well, to this point the primary difference is O'Hearn has shown he can handle LHP while Clemens hasn't.

The team that played at a 57 win clip featured a bullpen consisting of names like - Erasmo Ramirez, Jose Urena, Genesis Cabrera, Noah Davis, Brooks Kriske, Thomas Hatch, should I go on. Apologies, but I'm not putting much stock in that 57 win clip the last two months. With that said they can't completely rely on Sands & converted starters to fill that void. They may get a couple of successes, but signing at least one proven high leverage reliever would help a lot. If they won't even do that then it's hard to believe they truly have a plan to compete this season.

McLean in in 2023 was struggling in college ball, in 2024 was ok in AA. Now he had a great 2025 which culminated in 48 IP at the MLB level. The Mets may be so high on him they won't trade him for anyone & that's fine. There is no way for you or anyone else to know if any other team would trade McLean for Ryan. Obviously, as a fan my opinion doesn't matter, but if I were in Falvey's shoes there is no way I'd trade Ryan for McLean straight up.

Agree with your post & wanted to add to this. Wallner's so called "bad" season in 2025 wasn't really that bad. It's true he finished with a wRC+ of 114 which is the lowest he produced since his debut season (2023 141 & 2024 154). In 2025 Wallner had more than twice as many PA's vs LHP & responded with a .790 OPS vs LHP. Overall, his production was down some, but he also took a step towards becoming a FT player.

Mets Interested In Trading For Joe Ryan
MGX replied to Cody Christie's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If the Twins trade Joe Ryan they need to set the price for each team that inquires. The Twins/Falvey have the leverage & they need use it. For example if the Mets are truly interested in Ryan & the Twins want McLean in return & the Mets say no then Falvey needs to say ok. The worst thing that can happen is moving your best trade asset & letting the other team set the price. If no one will give you the price you asking for keep Ryan. With that said there are a lot of teams that need starting pitching not just the east coast teams we always hear about. The Twins need to explore all possibilities for any trades they may make this off-season. As an example the A's are loaded with the type of players we could use & they have a need for starting pitching. -
That's funny I just read on a Mets blog the following proposal... To Mets: Tarik Skubal To Tigers: David Peterson, Jett Williams & Brandon Sproat lol

I don't see how we can say Eisenreich was blocking Puckett. He had a health issue that took him out of baseball for a while. He debuted in '82 with a solid showing in 111 PA's, but in '83 he only had 8 PA's & '84 36 PA's. That isn't blocking anyone. Meanwhile, Puckett was in rookie ball in '82 & A ball in '83, he skipped a level & went to AAA in '84 & debuted the same season. If anything Puckett was fast tracked to MLB. The idea that players are blocked is exaggerated IMO. When a player is ready & plays well enough to force a promotion they'll get there chance.

The Twins need to get a top prospect for Ryan or don't trade him, it's simple. They can't settle for what other teams are willing to trade. They have the leverage & need to use it.

Certainly the Twins should be looking at all options & not focusing on one team or player. With that said I think the A's are a team that matches up very well with us. I'd love to see a package for DeVries & If the A's just won't trade him then a deal involving Soderstrom would work. Someone mentioned Walcott & the Rangers could be looking to add a starter so that may work as well. The Mariners are another team that is interesting & deal involving Ford would be good too.

If the Twins do nothing, which seems improbable, then the opening day roster could look like what is suggested in the article. The bottom line for me is until we know the direction the team is taking with Ryan & Lopez it's just guessing. If they move both of them then Jeffers is likely gone as well & maybe even Buxton. Then we know the full rebuild is moving forward. If they retain all 4 of those players they need to be all in on competing. This means adding at least two high leverage arms for the bullpen, a RH hitting utility player who consistently hits LHP & can play 1B(someone like Romy Gonzalez on Boston) or a FT 1B & Clemens is used in a utility role. They also need to add a second utility player who is a quality defender at SS or a starting SS & Lee is used as a utility player. Whether these moves are done through trade or Free agency doesn't matter they need to be done if they plan to compete. I've seen many people projecting wins for the 2026 Twins, which to me is almost impossible until we know the direction. One last comment - I hope they choose one or the other & go 100% in that direction. For me the worst scenario is to choose something in between. Unfortunately, that is what I think we'll see.

A Couple of Obscure but Interesting Facts about the 1981 Twins
MGX replied to Teflon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That 1981 season definitely provided some weird oddities because of the strike & the way it was handled/mishandled by MLB. For the Twins who were awful in the 1st half & yet were about .500 in the 2nd half, about 1/2 way into August which kept them in range of a playoff spot. Kansas City was bad in the 1st half (20-30) like the Twins & bounced back to win the 2nd half division title. The most unfortunate result of that strike & MLB's handling of it was the fact that the Cincinnati Reds had MLB's best record in 1981 & didn't make the playoffs because of the idea of having a divisional winner in each half. -
3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed. Things can change season to season with defensive numbers. My original point was if we're going to sign/trade a 1B I want to have some confidence they're going to be better than what we already have. I'm not sure Lowe is that guy, but maybe.- 36 replies

3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We could sign him & hope that happens, but his production has been declining for multiple seasons. Clemens has improved his productivity over multiple seasons. Last season was the 1st time he has 150+ PA's & he produced reasonably good results. Again, I'd like to the Twins get someone who forces Clemens into a utility role where IMO he can provide more value. I just don't see Mountcastle, with his declining power numbers, as that player.- 36 replies

3 Non-Tendered Bats the Twins Could Consider
MGX replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No to the OF's for sure we have no need. For me it's also a no on Lowe. Lowe's splits - vs LHP - OPS - .504 & vs RHP - OPS - .762 Clemens splits - vs LHP - OPS - .482 & vs RHP - OPS - .782 Lowe was also well below average defensively while Clemens was well above average. Is Lowe really an improvement? I've seen other suggestions for Mountcastle which to me is even worse. Mountcastle splits - vs LHP - OPS - .598 & vs RHP - OPS .672 & ok defensively. It would be great if we could get someone to force Clemens into a utility role where he'd be more valuable to the team, but they should actually be an improvement & not signing someone hoping they will perform better.- 36 replies

Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
MGX replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could see it being more of a platoon situation with Jackson playing vs LHP which would free up Jeffers to play 1B/DH vs LHP. Either way Jackson likely won't get more than a couple hundred PA's. You may be right on Vazquez, he just doesn't offer much going forward. -
Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
MGX replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In 3 seasons with the Twins Vazquez posted an OPS+ of 64, 60 & 52, absolutely horrible. His first two seasons his defense was good, but last season even that fell off. No way should they have brought Vazquez back. They traded for Jackson to be a backup C, he's been solid defensively & showed signs of improvement at the plate last season. All of that at a lower salary than what Vazquez will likely get. For what it is, a backup Catcher, it's a good trade. -

How the Twins Can Win by Outdeveloping, Not Outspending
MGX replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Informative article. My takeaway is still that there is plenty of money to spend. Based on the numbers provided - $324M in revenue & $154M in payroll for 2025. It's also noted on average it's $20M for the coaching staff, so that's $174M leaving $150M to cover other expenses for the business. While I'm not qualified to guess what the other expenses in the business amount to, I have to imagine 2025 was a profitable season for the Twins. If that's the case why does it feel like we may be looking at a sub $100M payroll for 2026? If they could have $154M or even $140M for payroll they should be able to build a competitive & entertaining team.
