  1. a 6-1 loss is no different than a 2-1 loss. Casey Fien not getting a batter out sooner led to the 4 runs. In the end the difference of four more runs was inconsequential except to the season's statics for the Royal player. They may need every bit of leverage an extra bump up in their statistics they can get. Their agents might think the Royals use OPSBI
  2. If it is down to Allen and Willis they have thrown out the major league experience criteria for a coach. The 2 questions I have in regards to Allen are as follows. If there is a criteria to have mlb experience, did someone give LENIII bad information to jerk his chain? And by there being certain TD posters liking Allen, did that just kill any chance he had?
  3. WAR was stated to be a measure of what that player's contribution was towards the team wining. As any defensive metric is going to be subjective there will be a hole in any all encompasing so called advanced metric. Fangraphs clearly states it is not a precise tool. I don't think Smith ever called it precise. If the curators or creators do not call it a precise tool how can the imprecision be assailed. It is the users who appear not to know what the tool is used for and assail the tool for what they have forgotten.
  4. A ss who hits 20 HR a year while batting .250 would be rarer than a 1b, so in the concept of how much better is this player than a replacemnt level player it would mean more to be a ss with those numbers than a 1b.
  5. For an outfielder I would hope that Ryan can pull a majic trick and find someone out there better than Bourjos. If that isn't gong to happen then Bourjos could be a fine placeholder
  6. Sign any low risk high reward player you can. The emphasis is high reward as oposed to mediocre reward.
  7. The story at one time was Lucas was coaching in the midwest league so he could be closer to home. Last year he was in Florida. Not exactly close to home. LaRussa's team had a bad year in 2010. 86 wins, but a lot more was expected. Somebody had to be the fall guy. The other explanation was he told the scouting director to find better material to build a pitching staff from. There was some speculation that the scouting director did not take to well to his master plan being questioned. When the Cubs fired Mason, they also fired a lot of the rest of their minor league staff.
  8. Adam Wainwright started his big leauge career in Mason's bullpen. The numbers for his minor league career were not great foe the high minors. Of course Wainwright started his career so long ago that those seasons are but a faded memory.
  9. How quickly people forget that to get Scherzer, Sanchez, Jackson, Cabrera and a host of other players the Tigers had to give up something. Either they are the luckiest franchise around for trades or their prospects look real good before they fizzle. They have had prospects rise up and do quite well. Currently they have a lousy farm system, in other years htey have produced a little talent. Thing is, the core of the good players on hte team are over 30 for hte most part. If there is nothing in the system to use for trades then the Tigers will be down for quite awhile. It is even possible to be a worse slide than the Astros. There are people on this board who appear not to understand that owners have accumulated net worth by not selling assets to lose money on sports teams.
  10. Glynn, with his experience, should be a fine addition to the staff. The nattering of lack of outside voices ignore that any coach is going to be a sum of their experiences. All but the assistant hitting coach have spent more time outside of the Twins organization than in it. I have not head of lobotomies being done, but I highly doubt you unlearn what you have seen elsewhere.
  11. The Cardinals have done extremely well with minimal foreign player signings. The only one I could think of is Diaz, who has not made it as a major league player yet. Even midmarket teams can do well without signing higher priced unproven foreign talent. Yes the Cardinals paid steak prices for Diaz, the questions left unaswered is he chopped liver?
  12. The Cardinals are mid market, their current roster has no free agents from other countries other than from the 16 year olds. They did sign Diaz, but he is in AA
  13. The article on Hughes and his walk rate I found amusing. Some pitchers rtegressed to the mean, some did not while others were injured. They call that analysis? Label them all control pitchers because they had few walks? Does Carl Pavano gave up few walks. Did he have similar pitching style to Hughes? How about trying to figure out why some pitchers "regressed" and others did not.
  14. There is a budget and there is a payroll. They do not have to be equal. So basically the budget is now said to be limited by the nature of which Ryan wants to spend. Hopefully the analytics department can accurately forecast what people should be worth and convince Ryan of that. If Ryan views the value for the money of the player he will spend. He has Carte Blanche. Except if he spends what he thinks is wisely and it wasn't Ryan wold have to either ride of into the retirement sunset or find a new organization
  15. I like the old stories of players having to point at a picture on the menu to order food. The Nishi experiment is probably why they want their players to become bilingual. And yes it would be beneficial if the coaches could learn enough spanish to be able to chew them out in no uncertain terms in their own language.
  16. In defense of Souhan, when he choses to wtite about runners he can turn a nice piece, http://www.startribune.com/sports/163364056.html. I did not go looking through the archives, but he did write about his trainng one day with an elite runner that was quite good. He even poked fun at himself. As you can tell by the lack of stories about runners and the local events, runners do not bring readership to the Strib.
  17. Yep, Souhan never said the word concussion. He just ripped him for not playing without even having the courage to say what injuries he thought Mauer should have been able to play through. Perhaps Souhan could have shown how the majority of the starting big leauge catchers play 150 games a year, or most of the day games after night games. Nope, just nebulous attacks
  18. For some the analysis of a problem means finding ways to criticize. They can also justify it by sying they are being tough on the Twins, or whomever. This is the Souhans of the world as well as many on the internet. There is either a culture of playing hurt, maybe exacerbated by misdiagnosis or magically people need an operation suddenly days after the season ends. This year Collabello Nolasco was playing wounded then the knife. A couple years ago Diamond fit the description, before that it was Blackburn. I am not recalling some of the others. They get to be called routine procedures, but if you need a procedure, you are not healthy.
  19. What makes you think Ryan reads the paper? You know they preach don't read those things. FWIW some day we will hear some manager say to his players "don't go on the internet. All they say is garbage about you."
  20. What the Ryan detractors do not seem to realize that there are a few candidates for a job that you do not have to interview. Maddon has enough of a body of work anyone should know what he is about as a manager. Ryan was in contact. Maddon wants the job, or he doesn't. The Twins job was Maddon's leverage to get what he wanted out of the Cubs. I do not think he interviewed with the Cubs FWIW.
  21. Depends on what wins out first., Lovullo's desire to be paid well or the desire to finally be a manager.
  22. Why would Lovullo keep them?
  23. So in an interview when Ryan talks about the perspective gained by talking to outside candidates he was basically spewing what ended up on Pleiss's porch? Ryan will not tell you specifics what he has done right or wrong. All of his cards are kept close to the vest, even if it is an unpaired three of diamonds. Nor would I expect anyone who posts on this board to admit what they posted bears a resemblance to what is on Pleiss's porch.
  24. Then it would be darn lucky he can pick people off or his lob % would be higher. If the person is picked off they would not be left on base when the inning ended
