  1. Firing Gardenhire does not put fans in the seats. It removes a reason for not going. Fanatics blame the manager for losses. Now they say they did something to change the team. About as effective as shuffling a rotation of 4-5 starters and which reserve outfielder tokeep the outcome of a season.
  2. I think whoever Ryan hires for manager there will be some history between the two. I don't think Ryan Ryan likes strangers too well. If they hire Dougie Baseball as manager I would think he would have an idea of coaches he would like to work with. He has been around baseball to know people.
  3. It worked forKC this year. I did not work last year with a better ptching staff. How many teams have added players to no avai
  4. He once wanted to work closer to home. Lucas found himself working in Florida. Perhaps he was let go because he voiced sidpleasure.
  5. Since you are making a deal on how bad the Twins are throwing out base runners. It was reported Suzuki has thrown out 25.3% of the basestealers. The 0/19 of Pinto might go a long way to explain why the Twins brass are not that high on him as a catcher.
  6. "Before helping the Orioles, Wallace was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Atlanta Braves and had a health scare with his hip replacement. Now he is the Orioles' fifth pitching coach since 2010 and one who, based on Showalter's comments and the success of the team, can stay with Baltimore for as long he wants." That was from Rueters. As Thrylos points out the Twins and Orioles have the same fielding independent pitching. I would take then that is the only pitching statistic Thrylos mentioned to compare to the Orioles that the Twin's pitching staff could be comparable to the Orioles. Now if Showalter thinks that his coach can have a job for the rest of his life with the Oriole's results, who are we to complain of Anderson. His staff is producing the same result as Wallace's
  7. The Twins pitchers gave up 200 more hits than the Orioles pitchers did. That alone would not explain more runs. The LOB% of 77% for the Orioles versus 69% for the Twins would cause me to think maybe the Twin's pitchers were prone to giving up the big inning more than the Orioles. Not to be too picky, but I guess that is why when one uses statistics to determine the difference between 70 and 96 you need to look at more than a few statistics. .
  8. Being rushed implies they were not ready for the major leagues. Like Hicks. Could you enlighten me on how they were rushed? Would Berrios be considered rushed to AAA? Polanco fit the bill in going to AA? You can play at a level or you can't. If you can't play at a level higher than a level you had not played much at then you were rushed. If you can, somebody did right by the player.
  9. I do not see Herman, Oliveros, or Schaffer going unless there is someone signed that is better than they are. If Ryan anticipates Duensing or Swarzak costing more than their value, they are gone. I could see a lefthander that is cheap staying, unless Ryan can scrape someone else up. Most will be designated for assignment when their slot is needed. The exception is the ones that need a contract like Burton Dunsing and Swarzak.
  10. The shift is employed when the batter's spray chart shows a tendancy and usually no base runner. So to get the "you coulda shifted there" number you would have to have an understanding how predominante of a hit pattern you are willing to shift for. It would be a safe guess given the Twins have given up about 150 more baserunners that the Pirates have there is less chance for shifting by the Twins. To really break it down, you would have to look up when during an inning a hit/walk was given up More baserunners on means less shifting..What other factors wouls limit shifting. If your pitcher does not have good control and leaves a lot of pitchs where a hitter could go the other way (or over the fence) versus pulling the ball, it might be a good idea not to shift. I think the Twins have a preference towards not shifting when the pull hitting tendancies are less prominent. The numbers might say it is a good idea.
  11. Maybe that is why thy let Lucas go, he was not teaching pitchers an out pitch. Cuellar is at the big league level. If he see things and does not work at changing them h should be aded to the list of dparting coaches
  12. There are improvements a pitcher can make through the year. It may not make them a successful pitcher, but still a better one. Are the clunker years because even with coaching the pitcher did not improve because they had already reached their ceiling? Clunker year would be a kind description of 2012. Anybody with a D to start their last name had a pretty good year for them. PJ Walters had a career year. Yet you could not call it a successful season. In some respects you judge the pitching coach by if the pitchers exceeded expectations of what they were capable of. Did they get better than what they were before. It may not show up on a stat sheeet, though it might.
  13. Yes I think they go out thinking they have a chance to win. Did they roll over and die in Detroit against any of the former Cy Young winners? Good job on propagating the big lie on losing culture. Keep repeating it over and over again and people will believe you. In the meantime, show me when the club has quit playing hard.
  14. How can a fan figure out how well a coach prepares a player How much of what the coach does is his thing versus the desires of management above him? There is praise for what Pittsburg is doing with starters on another thread. Sinkerball pitchers and high GB% was what the Twins have tried to do for the last decade when there wasn't a Johan around to start. Anderson's starters had a decent 2010. Was it Anderson, or the pitchers? 2012 was bad. Was it Anderson or the pitchers? Did Anderson forget how to coach. Look at 2010. Pretty much most of the regular starters had one of their best years Did Anderson have nothing to do with it?As an observer of the game from a distance I can't judge the effect of a coach. I have been around people who are very good at thier proffession and some that were not. Some will not give praise to those who helped make them good. Some can not be told a whole heck of a lot because they know it all. I can't imagine that ball players would be any different
  15. Then BABIP is not luck. Many here claim it is luck
  16. High GB%. Sinkerball pitchers. Hmmmm Check out what Twins pitchers did in 2010 Maybe the Twins were onto something that year. A trendsetter perhaps. The starters did have a 6.37 K/9 without the benefit of pitching to a pitcher. Wonder what changed?
  17. I wil use th same arument that people use to castigate the Twns.hen they win in the payoffs with this staff then I will get excited about what they do.
  18. When actuality and theory present different vews, the statisticians call the reality an outlier
  19. There are people saying the Twins need to hire more Spanish speaking coaches, maybe they will get their wish. I would say that it alls under the category of be careful what you wsh for. Old story by Tom Powers http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_20934756/tom-powers-twins-minor-league-coach-gary-lucas
  20. Take the case of Worley. He can rip on the Twin's coaching. Was he told about his mechanics and he ignored it? Did the Pittsburg coaches say something to him that he ignored. The person who told him he was flying open was not a coach. When the mere mortals spot something, you ought to think a little.. Worley did. No coach is going to throw him under the bus, it doesn't do them any good. You really don't know how good a coach is unless they are exceptional. Well, most coaches are not exceptional. Very few are. Cuellar and Anderson fit the commoner category. They could be very good, but not exceprtional. Duncan was exceptional.
  21. If you to have an external motivator to perform at a high level, you are not going to do as well as someone with internal motivation. Rarely should a coach/manager have to do the motivating.
  22. If they thought Pinto was going to be good he would be playing. Suzuki would not have been extended. They have seen him for 9 years. Pinto's ceiling would appear to be backup catcher. Far different than other players. Hicks is viewed as a 5 tool sort of guy with a higer ceiling.
  23. It seems like every year there is talk of Swarzak or Duensing competing for a stuarter role. It could be a carrot to get them to work hard over the winter. I was hoping to find Swarzak's ERA as a starter. I found this http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/twins-loaded-with-pitching-talent/ Hope this old article gives someone a laugh
  24. Name one signing that they broke the news on? They are not employees of the Twins but of FSN. Their access is the same as any other media. How the Twins have made decisions is kept very close to the vest. Who will be in the future plans and for how long would not be discussed in a public area. Who plays where and when well may be discussed to the media memebers for upcoming games. Long range plans for players being discussed in public? Find some proof. Escobar and Santana s the outfield of the future? That would be brought up as a leak to troll. Looks like someone bought it.
  25. Mackey almost lost me on a former member of the Beatles still sell out stadium shows 50 years later versus a glam rock guy now doing the rural casino tours. The fire to play has to come from within the player. A bad manager can take away that fire (Bobby Valentine in Boston) A good manager can feed the fire, but the spark always has to come from the player. The desire to win does not show up on the stat sheet. It is not a skill that Sabr can measure. The desire to do the work to maximize the skills has to come from the player to go above and beyond the coach. Ryan has not added a fire to the team. The caveat is they are also hard to find. A player to walk the walk and talk the talk. That will set the culture of the clubhouse.
