I’m coming to this discussion late but I gotta say what others probably have, hitters need to remove their hands from around their throats when they get in the box. Jeffers - Lee are horrible & Miranda is right there with them. Lee looks like the worst hitter on a church league team. The author here called it correctly, stating, “Jeffers popped out for the 12th time in his last 11 AB’s” ……Miranda seems to have reverted to ‘23 Jose. Julien has been so bad he got his first AB in a week, in the midst of nobody else performing. Lewis seems to have come alive - encouraging. Just saw on MLB Central some perspective from the Clubhouse Leader - Correa: …….paraphrasing……… “….This situation is poison to some and fuel for others. Those that use this as fuel go on to have beautiful, long careers. We have a bunch of young guys and they are getting help from a lot of sources. In the end it is up to you…..” Been preaching this here for a couple months - the Manager & hitting coach & experienced veterans can only do so much to guide one in the batters box. The hitters gray matter - ability to focus - ability to maintain a confident outlook - and just plain talent are what needs to come together. Gotta do it - get it done, yourself!!!

Per Matthew’s article…….Zebby is 87 pitches in…….he’s got 2 outs and he JUST gave up a double to the #9 hitter…..Duran (All-star) left handed hitter coming to the plate. Experienced Lefty - fresh - with a .529 OPS against v. left handed hitters. I take him ever time if I don’t already know the outcome of the inning.
-
So Duran is an All-star. He bats Left handed. Seeing what the outcome is and stating what should have/could have been done is silly, IMO. If Irvin gets the guy out, which is his job, (.529 OPS v. lefties) there’s no conversation nor second guessing. Matthew - great re-cap - great logical, fact based reasoning. Do we ALL wish something different would have transpired - absolutely. Trying to make Irvin’s walk of Duran and his advantage disappearing somehow Baldelli’s fault does not make any sense to me. It’s like saying Twins shouldn’t have started Lopez in the first game because he couldn’t get anybody out - what the hell are you thinking Rocco?!?!
-
My daughter went to Toledo - love the Mudhens - former Twin’s affiliate back in the day. Ibanez is/was terrible. He hit a game winning HR against Twins and again a few weeks later against another decent Team in the 9th. Outside of these two games the organization couldn’t figure out how to hide him. Colt Keith is a rookie call-up - supposed to be good prospect but he isn’t Carlos Correa. Faedo isn’t as good as Ronny Henriquez (1.34 WHIP & 2-1 strikeout to walk ratio). Mize isn’t Joe Ryan…….etc etc Tigers have some guys hurt - Twins and every other roster does as well - Tigers guys are just guys ………Headrick has been hurt too, nobody cares…..nobody points that out in press, nor should they

You think something as fickle as coaching helps a guy hit a 97mph fastball or a 12-6 curveball??? You/anyone can complain or “judge” all you like, it’s a free society. Thinking you can coach a guy to become a legitimate MLB hitter is naive. Sure, guys can be helped by pointing out good habits - bad habits - tweaking stances - weight shift approach - etc……Helping with what’s important in scouting reports - video. Thinking the Twins are lacking there or that the Manager helps guys become great hitters is nuts. Talented professional athletes are the guys that determine whether they get hits in their AB’s - their pitch recognition - their discipline - their mindset - etc. I like to think reality is the right world.

He’d have to throw ALL shutouts in September. I get the inconsistencies with the Rookies - the anxiousness when they pitch. Bottom line is the last start for each of the three were solid! Ober has pitched well his last 3 straight outings and Team hasn’t won a game. Lopez gave up 1 run through 6 last week - team lost. If your Team can’t score the Team will lose…..even Koufax needed runs scored……so would Gray.
-
I get that. Cannot agree that guys aren’t hitting due to a lack of proper coaching!! There aren’t complex plays nor a bunch of Teamwork within the Team constraints of baseball. Generally, it’s mano a mano - pitcher v. hitter. It’s not basketball or football or soccer. There’s no rest during the game - no special complex defenses - offensively, there’s nothing the coach can do if his players can’t hit! It’s fair to the players since it’s the exact same situation for all of them.

…….what’s the comment if “Matthews is left in” and he gives up a double or HR……then Baldelli is an idiot because he didn’t act. Irvin pitched fine in at least two outings I recall since picking him up. If Sands does come in during the 5th and folds as he eventually would - then whose fault is his failure? Is there NOTHING a player is responsible for?

“Rocco & hitting coach are to blame for every hitter going into a slump at the same time”………………how much effect do you think coaches have on athletic ability and player’s individual success? Obviously, waaaay tooo much. If coaching determined outcomes anyone could be a great hitter with coaching and anyone that was once successful could then suck with coaching. Seem Logical? Jeffers has sucked for months…….Lee looks like a high school kid……..Lewis has come back to earth and his plate discipline looks like a 2nd year player……..how about Miranda over past 3 weeks? I got it, the coaches put all their focus on Kyle Farmer trying to resurrect his year - that’s why he’s heated up! PLAYERS have to perform. Pretty sure, to a man they would all tell anyone the same thing. Plate discipline is “discussed with coaches” but the players need to execute the plans - that’s it, completely on their backs whether they succeed or not. I guess we just disagree.

There’s no argument from me regarding injury other than the reality that Paddack & Ryan are out & have been …….. Correa & Buxton, neither will play 100 games. Obviously, deeper than those 4 guys. Tigers, decimated? I’m not a Tiger’s deep follower but Ibanez getting hurt helped make a tough $$ decision - which was to get him out of the way. Carpenter has been nicked. Couple young contributing pitchers. Other guys seem to be on periphery of their organization, IMO. Maybe I’m uninformed? They traded 4 guys or so that would lead one to think they wouldn’t vault forward but to their credit, they have! Paquantino gets hurt for Royals and that’s their excuse per national experts - Correa was 3rd in BA in the League with a 3.6 WAR on July 12th & then he was out 2 months. Buxton was having his best offensive season (outside of HR total) and he missed over a month in his latest IL stint………….your point, nobody cares & it isn’t changing anything, complaining. Gotta get it together.

Cannot disagree with facts! Are they that bad consistently on offense or are they just completely absent of any clutch gene? They seem helpless v. everybody now! Hitters with OPS+ over 100 in normal line-up: Orioles - 9 guys Detroit - 4 guys (plus one relative newcomer) Kansas City - 4 guys Yankees - 4 guys Twins - 9 guys What’s up, other than injuries?……..injuries certainly are a significant piece…..few care!

Players gotta play and get outs…….each guy. He could pitch you or me & and if they can’t score it doesn’t really matter. The run totals were 17-4 on the day………..the continual lack of any offensive punch is the issue. If they ever have a lead after the 5th/6th I’m confident that the appropriate guys that are available will be in the game.

Royals are winless over last 6 games & now they are headed out on the road for reminder of regular season. 4 runs over last 5 games. Game back of Tigers & Royals……..just need to tie one of them. Seems we need 4 of next 6 or we are probably toast. Gotta assume Detroit wins 4 of 6 at home. If we win 3 games, Mariners have to win 5 of 6 to get past us. Ober has 2 starts left - Lopez has 1 start left. Rookies all have 1 start each. Need 4 of those. Offense is not much better than non-existent……..gotta pick it up at home! Pen should be back to pretty rested by Tuesday.

Ober’s last 3 starts have all been good & Team is 0-3. Lopez has been performing at a high level. 2.01 ERA over previous ELEVEN STARTS. He blew up today! Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go Friday! Rookies have been up & down - until their last 3 starts over the previous few days (really good) they were pretty rough. I think 4-5 innings of 2 runs or less is most that can be expected. Can’t whine about length of their starts as they are all in high end of innings expectations and the competition (Detroit) throws out “openers” 2 of every 5 starts. Gotta figure out how to cover the innings, period. Everyone has a Pen that’s spent - particularly if they can’t score, like our club.

No hits - no runs………Lopez could have pitched a gem and they still lose. 4-6 guys per game going hitless makes it tough to back the Team. The Royals are struggling - that’s the best thing to discuss. Swept in back to back series & 4 runs over their last 5 games…….Twins like.

I get the Margot angst and certainly understand challenging the statement about him being “a solid center fielder”! Trading a few guys in a group to try and find some reasonable value for a potential trade partner seems logical. The bad news is all 29 other Teams have video and scouts and TV’s and computers and brains and none of them are trading a #3 starter for 2-3 guys the Twins don’t want, because they aren’t good enough to play regularly on a competent Team. ROTATION: Lopez - Ryan - Ober were all essentially Top 40 pitchers in baseball (blending WHIP - K’s - K/walk ratio - innings - etc.) before Ryan got hurt(3 of Top 40 & there’s 30 Teams) ………add Festa after a dozen starts in ‘24 & SWR after 26 starts in ‘24 and our rotation is fine in ‘25…… Paddack/Matthews & couple more farm guys in the wings. PEN: Moran - Funderburk - Irvin - Stewart - Topa - Henriquez - Headrick - Winder - Alcala - Varland - Paddack - Jax - Sands - Duran - Blewett - Tonkin - Canterino……….,that’s 17 guys w/o digging too deep. At least 10 of these guys can be exceptional, when healthy. Signing a FA, that’s a competent reliever is a crap shoot. Not against it completely but one never knows……maybe explore this? I don’t see the gaping holes in the Twins near term Roster.
-
Emulating the Rays could mean developing pitching from within. Lots of things other than reducing payroll to new lows. I’m not deluded enough to think Lopez is going to retire a Twin for sure, but trading him after letting Gray walk would nearly guarantee another drop in attendance of about 1/2 million in ‘25. Fans bitch - fans in TD group really bitch. People are still pissed about the Viking’s of the 70’s…….they sell out every week…….If Twins make the playoffs and look competitive the focus will turn to next year and the outlook will be all roses! They haven’t lost the fan base, yet.

I think Lee could be a pretty solid 2nd baseman. He’s pretty intuitive with his movements………he’s easily a younger version of Farmer……..maybe OK at 3B? He doesn’t look like a competent SS though….able to make some flashy plays but not a day in day out great fielder.

If they trade Lopez after this year, the fan base as well as the guys in the Clubhouse will shutdown……..if he gives up 6 runs in a playoff start, maybe there’s no hit out out in Falvey? Otherwise, he’d need to keep his head down, IMO.

Didn’t get why Julien isn’t sent up, unless there was a lefty counter move from their Pen? Maybe Rocco decided to go full George Costanza and do “the opposite” of logical to shake things up? It looked like the worst possible match up. Watching the 4 & 5 hitters pop out to 3rd baseman in foul territory seemed like the last nail, in real time. On a separate note………Is Miranda gassed? He needs to square something up in a bad way - really soon!
