I get the attraction and the interesting thought exercise, but our pitching is definitely not the problem right now. Acquiring another good pitcher means we still lose lots of 2-1 or 2-0 games. Skenes is a huge talent, but I would argue that ERod and Jenkins are probably more valuable to this team than Skenes would be, unless he can pull an Ohtani and hit also.- 31 replies

Well, if we can switch him back, while still sending Groyce down to St. Paul to work on his swing, maybe we can have both of them on the team! Unorthodox for sure, but seems worth a try.

For approximately the past year, Royce Lewis has been atrocious at the plate, yet for some strange reason we keep trotting him out there and calling him a “star” whose hitting is key to the season. “Some” hitting is indeed key to the season. It doesn’t have to come from him. Perhaps the odds of that hitting coming from Royce Lewis would increase with a stint in St. Paul to clear his head and work on his hitting in a lower pressure situation. The way things are going now for him, I don’t see the downside. On the flip side, it may not work. So far it hasn’t worked with that other guy (Julien), but that doesn’t mean that it won’t in the future. I’m not sure why we are so hesitant to send him down. We’ve done it before with lots of players (Wallner, Buxton, Sano, a bevy of pitchers, etc.). Why not Royce Lewis.

The 1987 offense was better. The pitching wasn't close. OPS+ of 99 in 1987. Current OPS+ of 126 in 2025. The 1991 offense was excellent and their pitching, while better, still wasn't in the same class as the current pitching staff. The 1987 team wasn't a juggernaut. I still remember everyone thinking that they were going to fade away at some point, but they didn't. Tom Kelly definitely had all of his smoke and mirrors working in 1987. Don't misunderstand, I always have been and remain a huge Twins fan, but I think you are waxing nostalgic about that team and Tom Kelly's zebra striped Zubas (and who doesn't!).

So. If he gets his expected results, he’s below average. Ouch!

You never know. Calling the 1987 Twins a team where a bunch of career years lined up isn't really accurate. Hrbek was awesome. Bruno and Kirby were very good. But the rest of the offense was pretty blah. On the pitching side Viola had one of his best years, Blyleven was OK, and after that, the best starter was Les Straker -- Randy Dobnak anyone? The team was good, but mostly they put it together in time to get hot for the playoffs (and had less rounds to go through). This year's pitching staff is miles ahead of that one. If the bats can find reasonable consistency, they could be good. One hundred wins good? Not sure, but hardly impossible.

He came up and had some spectacular moments, so we all figured that's who he would always be. However, now the world has caught up to him and he can't figure out a way out of the downward spiral. I'm sure both Royce and his coaches have tried lots of things. It's been a LONG spiral (actually very little like Wallner, who just had a bad start to the season). In his current iteration, he really does nothing for the team's chances of winning and for all the talk about "he's hitting the ball hard", if that were true then his batting average would be higher (not to mention his other stats). A trip to St. Paul right now would be excellent for getting him back to being the player that we hope he can be. A good Royce Lewis for the last half or even third of the season will be better for him and for the team than the one we have now for the rest of the season. Right now, Jonah Bride is probably the better option.

Well. . . no. But I'm pretty sure this is the first really hot day they have experienced this season, so that's more than nothing. That being said, they need more hitters hitting. A pitcher gives up four runs and because the Twins can't score it seems like a pitching implosion even if its not.

It's a lot more complicated than selling a house, so it's hardly surprising that it could take awhile. Admittedly I was a little amazed when Ishbia was identified so fast. Fingers crossed that they get it done as quickly as possible and that the new owner is a good one. In the meantime, Win Twins!

Agree 100%. However, I've been a baseball fan, and a Twins fan, long enough to know that fortunes can change quickly. Let's enjoy this run as long as we can and see if the pitchers can keep it going for a while! I'm not sure that the Twins have ever had both a rotation and bullpen this good at the same time. Rotation alone maybe never, but when combined with this bullpen (and they have had some really good ones in the past), we are witnessing something pretty historic for this team.

This is certainly an interesting option. For all of the "he's taking good at bats" talk that I hear, Lewis has REALLY struggled at the plate. Some time at AAA might enable him to get his bat and his head pointed in a good direction. Right now, Bride is probably the superior option to Lewis, even if we don't want to admit it.

Clearly the Pohlads are asking for the moon for the Twins, but I’m not sure that was really the issue for the Ishbias. I think it is equally likely that White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf saw what was happening and agreed to boost the ownership stake in the Sox because he sees someone with the deep pockets that he thinks will eventually offer him what he wants for the Sox. Add in that Justin Ishbia is building a very substantial compound (more than a house) in Chicago and it makes a lot of sense for him to prefer that choice. I’m not dismissive of the argument that the Pohlads aren’t making an attractive target out of the Twins. After all, including the accumulated debt AND asking top dollar is pretty ridiculous, but I think with Justin Ishbia, there was more to it than just that.

Agreed. If you’re watching or not watching either because of or in spite of the owners, you’re probably missing the point of baseball entirely. This team has woken up and is playing well and deserves our collective attention. Go Twins!

While that may be mostly true, an overall narrative about a “poor drawing” team definitely doesn’t help the situation. Sometimes a narrative like that takes on a life of its own.

All of this is mostly true, but where is that replacement supposed to come from? I’m not seeing anyone in the Twins system that is breaking down the door to do that. Is it POSSIBLE that one of their minor leaguers could surprise and do well at the MLB level? MAYBE, but they are probably more likely to be worse and also lack the veteran-ness that isn’t super important, but not completely useless to the team. I agree that I would love to have someone better than France at 1B, but I’m missing where those candidates are going to come from right now. It’s the “can’t replace somebody with nobody” conundrum. Yes, they could/should have spent money on someone better, but they didn’t do that, So, here we are. Enjoy the scenery of France, without wondering if a trip to Spain or Germany would have been nicer.

Agreed, especially with the comment of the Twins being fairly successful picking first basemen from the scrap heap. It’s a very large improvement from when they used to try to do that with a pitching rotation!

I was with you on most of your post, but you lost me here. Absolutely we want a strong 1 through 9 of above average hitters, but honest competition or not, it can only happen if there are 9 above average hitters available and in your team’s control. I’m not saying that there may not be a spot here or there occasionally that might be better filled internally than externally, but I think you have you may have oversimplified the matter. As for France, I would call him OK, but pretty bad for the position he plays. He’s probably been better than advertised (which was atrocious) defensively and does seem to have a knack (luck? SSS?) for hitting with runners on base. At the moment, he seems to be mostly healthy, which on this current team, is probably his most important quality. France is the country we have, so let’s enjoy the sights as best we can.

Lee and Lewis are probably the two guys who we imagine are the most realistic possibilities for stepped up offensive performance because of their perceived struggles so far, but that offensive production coming from anyone on the team is likely to have the same effect. Bader or France could get hot. Larnach or Jeffers could get really hot. Even some of the non-obvious candidates could do it — Castro, or even McCusker (!?!) or Clemons. You just never know, and that’s kind of the beauty of it.

Seems logical but do we actually know Mauer and Morneau had many concussions prior to their career altering ones? I don’t remember hearing that before.

This all made sense given the (ridiculous) constraints on the personnel situation -- and they won! Wow! Thank goodness for solid pitching right now. Otherwise they might be in the middle of a losing streak instead of a winning streak. Seems like a good time to buy lottery tickets. . .

That is the reality of the situation. If Zebby comes up and really deals, he's in and probably never leaves. More likely, he will have some success -- probably more than last time -- and some struggle and go back down for a while, with Festa/SWR taking his place. I'm very OK with that. The rotation as currently constructed doesn't need Zebby to tear it up. Just come up, be solid, and we're very happy. The good news is that these MLB tours of duty are helping to build Zebby/Festa/SWR into solid MLB starters. Ryan and Ober weren't good overnight either, but they just keep getting better.
