  1. Nailed it! Santana is Molitor's preference at SS and Escobar is Ryan's SS. Escobar is "playing out of position" because: the Twins have a dearth of OF who are competent at defense and hitting, and to keep Escobar "sharp" when the rug is pulled-out from under Santana. Regular DH? The Twins have typically abhorred that concept. It runs counter to the philosophy of "multi-talented players", player rotation (keep 'em ready! 'ya kno), and is generally very expensive (again the Twins are cheap--paying a ton of money for a guy who doesn't defense). Soon, (next season for sure) that philosophy will have to be cast aside. The Twins are overloaded with "hitting-only" prospects and they will have to change because they can't put all of them in the field every day.
  2. MLB did turn a blind-eye towards steroids et al. But, I am convinced that there was more than just "ignoring" the situation. I think that there was a tacit encouragement considering the trumpeting of the accomplishments of some of the players. However, there was a change--a crackdown--and A-Rod definitely placed himself above the attitude (and actual rule change) concerning the use of certain drugs. His punishment was warranted.
  3. I couldn't disagree more! Leave well enough alone. If Ryan chooses to "pull rank", then it will/should be Escobar at SS. Polanco isn't in the equation.
  4. I think a better question than Santana banned from the Playoffs? is: "What should be done when Santana is no longer suspended?" The entire rotation is succeeding beyond expectation--including the expected (hoped?) performance by Santana. A strong case can be made to make no change in the rotation and place Santana in the bullpen come July.
  5. The use of a Derek Jeter photo as an example of what we could expect with a #6 selection is a glaring example of bait and switch advertising. Barry Bonds didn't always use steroids--and he put up some truly impressive numbers before he used them.
  6. The new field management team clearly deserves some credit. Under appreciated is that the Twins have done a lot of early scoring. I am convinced that pitching with the lead has improved their self-confidence in turn leading to improved results.
  7. Stauffer is being bundled with Livan Hernandez for a trade--that's why he is still here, but not being used.
  8. My, how poster's attitudes have changed! When the Santana story broke there were several lynch mobs on TD. Now that the Twins are winning and might be in post-season play, the attitude is "unfair! Now we are being punished". Tchh, Tchh.
  9. The Twins are winning--now (improbably) but nevertheless winning now. Without Sano. Elite prospect=not a player (yet). Sano's past, as a fielder, doesn't suggest that he will ever be the standard of excellence in the field--at 3B, or any position. Sano's value is as a power hitter. I don't know Plouffe's personal agenda as a player, whether he wants out or prefers Minnesota (all else being equal), but I'm sure not moving Plouffe from 3B. Trading Plouffe? What is being offered? But posters, the Twins don't play fantasy BB they play real baseball. Somebody actually must play 3B in real-time not just be classified as a 3B like in fantasy baseball. Previous Twins experience at 3B (prior to Plouffe) should have convinced posters that having "Hands of Stone" (though fine for boxing) is unacceptable. Move Sano to the OF to see if he can be "hid there" (like Killebrew) or DH it is. If the Twins need to change their philosophy about a regular DH--so be it. Remember when they said free-agents (especially pitchers) was just wrong? They changed their philosophy there--they can do it again for a regular DH, if that is what it takes to play Sano regularly.
  10. Does this mean that it wasn't Gardenhire behind the 13-man pitching staff with position players required to play 4+ positions?
  11. Considering the misfits the Twins have employed at 3B since Koskie left, I am very skeptical that the Twins would trade Plouffe unless he said "I want out." Please remember that Pohlad used the phrase, "...prospects aren't players...".
  12. Mauer isn't, and shouldn't be moved to the OF. He would be a huge problem in the OF. If the Twins are truly planning on keeping Plouffe (and Plouffe staying!!), there is no better position for him than 3B. Then, Sano moves--period. To be blunt, Sano is no future Adrian Beltre at 3B anyway. Since there will likely be a logjam of potentially power hitters with indifferent (or worse!) fielding skills places must be found for those who truly hit for power and average. The rest, are demoted, traded or lost. There can be no more hand-wringing for those "who are young, and need more time--because those guys got "beat-out" by others who are about the same age or even younger. Players must step-up and win a regular position. The "I'm a prospect" mentality has to be replaced with "perform--or go elsewhere" philosophy. These guys have very little time to win their job--or someone else wil!
  13. You are GUILTY of selectively misquoting--"...after [sano and Buxton] are promoted...". That's the real logjam. However, find a rotation to squeeze players in to a rotation ("Iz zat u Gardy?") is fine for Basketball, or any other sport that permits exit and reentry--but for baseball--just NO. Consistency of playing time correlates with consistency of good performance.
  14. ...Then there's the possibility that Plouffe is waiting to finish his six years and become a free agent. He can likely sign a 5+ year contract at an annual salary greater than his combined career MLB earnings--likely someplace other than Minnesota.
  15. But, there are reasons for that... . Escobar isn't my favorite--but I'm confident he is one of Ryan's favs. I still believe that Santana is at SS because that's who Molitor wants--and not Ryan. I believe a deal was struck between the two about these two. Add to the mix that Escobar has contributed (surprise) to winning despite not being a prototypical LF (or an especially good one). Teams tend to "ride the wave" when they are winning--and that wave includes Escobar. Will the wave crash and break-up on the rocks? Probably. But, Vargas would be sitting in Minnesota rather than playing in Rochester. Vargas isn't useful on the bench or plinking singles to keep his average up. He must slug--or make way for someone else. The logjam will only get thicker and shortly, when the "higher rated prospects" get promoted to the Twins. Guys like Vargas ( Arcia, Hicks, Rosario, and Santana ) must show they belong in the line-up--or else. My guess is that trades may get made, but that is unclear. But what is clear--there isn't room for everyone. For now, status quo is to be expected. Bernier isn't the reason Vargas is going to Rochester, of that I am certain.
  16. "Hunter more valuable than Mauer"?--or is it Mauer more valuable than Hunter? It really doesn't matter. Neither competes with the other for playing time, plus the cost of their respective salaries can be comfortably paid--by somebody else. The Twins can have both (or one, or neither) and still survive. As for Hunter signing with the Angels (back in the day), the Angels were a better team, with far more financial resources (to build a better team), and played in what most players consider a more desirable city. Hunter would have been questioned (mocked) by many for sticking with the Twins rather than signing with the Angels.
  17. Now that the team got above .500, I guess it's time to "right the ship" and promote the MiLers.
  18. Th newspaper article I read today said May 24, 2014 was the last day the Twins were .500 (0-0, doesn't count).
  19. Maybe the Twins inserted a clause in his contract to obtain approval before making public statements? That would not have been an unreasonable clause. Playing Hunter? Well, it's not like the organization was generous in providing "options" to play the OF, as opposed to all of the options provided for starting pitching.
  20. Anybody remember that Mauer was the regular catcher? I must have read a 100 posts to move him to 3B, and to the OF, how about Catcher?
  21. Very clear. Play the lesser player who has lower upside, in hope that he will become an average MLB player because average ballplayers are the path to long-term success. Sounds a lot like gardenhire's claim that the Twins can have one guy who doesn't hit provided all of the others are "doing their job".
  22. He did say it. It is no secret that there are FO personnel that are huge Escobar at SS proponents. Or, that a TD thread was created to advocate said change. Everyone post away! Is it better to settle for a "reached his potential" Escobar or to play Santana and see if he can truly be a SS of the future?
  23. I guess that "tumor" removed from Milhone wasn't the cure-all? Prediction: There will be many Twins' pitchers spending time on the IR List--until September.
  24. Any reasonable return from a trade of Pelfrey should not be delayed for any reason involving Meyer.
