  1. This reminds me of a Far Side cartoon of three vultures and one says to the others: "Patience Hell, I'm going to kill something."
  2. Disclaimer, I didn't see the 8th, but I followed on the net, and have read you posters. Much grousing on the bullpen--and it boils down to three misplays in the field (OK, the first by a bullpen pitcher). Any one of those plays made--and inning over, still 2-2. Hmm, it isn't just the pitching, the fielding has to make the plays.
  3. ABW faces the same problem all of the top prospects (other than Buxton): their defense is spotty and limited, there are several of them, and Joe Mauer. Mauer is going to play somewhere. Other positions are taken. Mauer will have three years left on his contract after this season. I think the Twins might accept the risk of Mauer's final two years as a catcher. Say 80-90 games as a C, some as a DH, some at 1B, some as a PH. The some will be determined by the success of the prospects at a position. ABW's situation can be managed by adding him to the 40-man roster this fall and playing in Rochester all of 2016. By Spring of 2017, much change should have happened to clear up his situation. The matter of trades, free-agent losses (or additions) will be a huge factor. But, ABW needs to learn to control the K-zone better, improve his OBP, and improve his defense. If he could become a tolerable OF (on defense) he would help himself immensely.
  4. The offense is basically missing everybody's bat--that's why there is a problem. Arcia has gone from a one-dimensional player to a zero-dimensional player--there is no reason to place him on the Active Roster much less insert him in the line-up. What I would like to know is why this "awesome" MiLB system is loaded with prospects that either hit well but display poor defense, or hit sporadically (and generally without HRs), but play solid defense, and damn near nobody who excels at both offense and defense and simply lacks experience to be promoted.
  5. Nonsense, the screaming for promotions from the minors is deafening--like this thread. Or, any of the threads about Sano, or Buxton. Then there's Vargas, Arcia, Pinto, Polanco... . The tone was clear--"the Twins need (name here) to fix the middle of the line-up, or become a regular DH ("who mashes")... . Everybody and anybody who has done anything in the minors as a hitter has had at least one thread developed on: "why (name here) will fix the problems and add multiple wins over-and-above whoever is holding done the suggested position for (name here). You can't deny these threads--you have posted on them too. Losing 5 of 6 isn't a disaster--and it certainly doesn't call for sweep of the line-up.
  6. Sounds like the front office debate concerning players and prospects.
  7. And yet these guys aren't responsible for the losing streak. Changing the butts on the bench won't solve anything.
  8. Forgotten in the discussion--playing a position adequately.
  9. The best I can conceive is that their plan is to trade him.
  10. Replacing Stauffer with Tonkin another mistake. Ryan must be in love with the concept of 13 pitchers--despite all evidence to the contrary of its use(lessness). OMG, add a position player! Anybody who resembles a hitter and can play any position would be more useful than Tonkin (or any other RP).
  11. The Tigers have just had a meltdown--but are they out of it? Should they panic? The Twins got beat by a better team (whoa, do you mean the Twins can't always play the down-n-outers?), and close a 1-5 homestand. Hmm, they started the season with a 1-5 mark, yet made a big turnaround! No, I don't think this Twins team will be in it for the whole season, at least they showed that the team isn't terrible and can actually win (more than half) for awhile. The "prospects" need improvement. The early batches have been mostly failures with the successes taking many a scuffed knee or elbow. Later batches, (those who are up-and-down now) that many posters guaranteed success--yeah they are being bruised--and they need more time. And the "promised saviors"? They are in Tennessee and not only is more time needed to test the present batch of "prospects"--those guys need more time too.
  12. If Ryan guts this team, like has happened since 2011, the team will collapse. 90 losses would be a distinct possibility. Better would be steady as she goes, rotating only those who have actually been here. The only "true" promotions I would consider is the September cups-of-coffee for Berrios and Meyer--but only as relief pitchers!
  13. I meant in the 2016 season.
  14. I wouldn't be surprised if both Buxton and Sano were held back the requisite games to extend team control.
  15. Apparently there will be another "hitter" added soon. On a one-hit night, that sounds pretty good.
  16. A) Gomez wasn't dumped! He was traded for JJ Hardy--who was the best SS this team has had for decades. Ortiz was dumped--but he would not accept the arb offer (Ortiz would have won!), and the purse strings were tight. But, the Twins had Morneau (who could play good defense) on his way up, and Mientkewitz, who they liked. Whereas Ortiz and defense should not be in the same sentence without a negative). The Twins wanted someone who could fit the template of RHB (with power?), DH, and be a #3 Catcher. They had somebody they thought was that guy. Unfortunately, he wasn't that guy. C) Maybe Ortiz will hit (close to ) as well as Ortiz--but then there are multiple guys who represent alternatives. Some can play defense, some can't. Some project just as high as Ortiz, some even higher. The Twins can't wait forever on Ortiz. Nor can they reserve a DH spot for him either.
  17. I believe they wasted this selection. Relief pitchers don't need to be drafted this early. There are glaring needs for OF who can hit, play defense, and throw. The mess of free-swinging, one-dimensional types of late suggests that both corner OF spots are available. Then there is catching. Pitching? Reach for a projectable starter, someone with the frame that says "he could be ...".
  18. There are plenty of place-holders on the 40-man roster--all that is needed are worthy candidates to replace them. The biggest problem is that the names most frequently cited are "iffy" in the field. The most likely "iffy" fielder to have a DH spot reserved for him is Sano--not Arcia, Pinto, or Vargas.
  19. Ah yes, the only twins OF who actually backs-up a play--and someone that Hicks normally doesn't play alongside.
  20. Hicks was never catching that one--nor anybody else--given where he was positioned at the start. OK, you don't like Hicks, I get that, but there is no need to manufacture reasons to support your perception.
  21. I conclude this discussion exists because they have all failed to meet standards. I also think that the FO has hopes that the group (Arcia, Pinto, and Vargas) can be trained to adequately play a position rather than be a DH. My guess is that the DH position is being reserved for Sano when he is promoted to the Twins. They would prefer to not have a conflict between "prospects" when the FO has already "picked their favorite".
  22. Another thread illustrating the pending logjam for three positions--LF, RF, and DH. I can visualize rotating four guys for three positions--but no more than four--some continuity must be preserved in order to maintain consistency of performance. Arcia is like the lobster in a heating pot--he doesn't sense the trouble he is in until it's too late.
  23. Every Twins player hits better in AAA than in MLB. Unfortunately several TD posters have placed unwavering faith in AAA (Rochester) as a combination visit the shrine/talk to the Oracle/drink from the fountain of hitting and fielding/rite of passage. In reality it is a punishment for failure at the ML level to give players the taste of Hades.
  24. "...characterized by clutch hitting and unprecedented pitching...". Whoa--this is what winners do. They hit, pitch, and play defense when "it counts". Examine most WS teams--that what they did. I'm not contending that the Twins will have that level of success. Nor was that level the goal for this season--it was to be respectable. So far they have succeeded at that goal and losing 90 games this season would be a huge stretch. I believe we can rule that one out. Most of the bad years this decade did not start out terrible--on the contrary--they were tepid to slightly negative. The team collapsed when the FO decided to use August and September as tryout time for "prospects". I am convinced that if the Twins stick with"those that got them here" as the regular players and keep the "prospects" to bench players, there won't be a collapse.
  25. If a guy will treat BP as "home run derby" what is to prevent him from taking the same mindset into the game? Players don't live in a vacuum. They have been bombarded with the stories about HR hitting and big contracts. See the examples of the Twins with Plouffe (and to an extent Dozier), Plouffe was extended many opportunities (after failures) despite indifferent fielding and periods of long slumps--because he had that one huge HR streak (I'm going to ignore the putrid stretches just preceding his HR streak). Of course his success is in front of them all. I didn't even get to David Ortiz of whom the "guys-from-the-islands" view as an oracle.
