  1. Not exactly, since Seattle and Baltimore played each other, and are only separated by a half game.
  2. I don't know if the corner has turned for good, but he looks more relaxed and less anxious. Each time he advanced a level in the minors he had an adjustment period. The majors adjustment was just a bit longer. Interesting comment by Rowson about hitting coming from aggressiveness, too.
  3. Mauer hits slightly better with RISP than normal, so I would agree that he is clutch. Also, he is hitting .296, good for 13th place in the AL. There are only 7 players hitting over 300 in the AL this year, and there are six players only .005 or less ahead of Mauer. He could possibly finish in the Top 10 this year, with an outside chance at Top 5.
  4. I think with today's stats, his post-all-star stats are: .333 / .370 / .657 / 1.027
  5. The Twins have played 12 games in 10 days, and after today will have played 13 games in 11 days. They've gone 7-5 in those games. Get a win today and they are 8-5 and have the wild card lead heading into an off day and a home stand. Come on Kyle!
  6. Again, apologies. I didn't realize my own power.
  7. I blame myself for not clarifying that the bullpen needed to hold them to 8.
  8. If they score 6 runs off the Jays bullpen and lose 10-9, I will count that as a disappointment.
  9. Seattle down 4-1 to the Yankees in the 6th. With a loss, the Twins may still be in the wild card lead after today. But first things first. Can they score 6 runs off the Jays bullpen today? Come on, Bandidou, Buck and Chulo....and "Mauer."
  10. Even if my nickname was "The Doof" I am not sure I was would put it on a an MLB uniform.
  11. I think Rosario goes yard in the next inning.
  12. When Vargas bounced that ball off the top of the wall, my immediate thought was "oh no, thrown out at second." Thankfully he held up!
  13. Estrada has given up 24 homers this season. Hopefully the Twons can add to the total before the day is done.
  14. Need to fire up the offense. (Rosario unlucky) Bottom of the order against 88mph fastballs, let's go.
  15. Are Garver's Guys and Girls like Charlie's Angels?
  16. Sometimes I wonder whether the multi-year process of minor leagues is really necessary. It's in the major league club's interest to have a player debut in the majors by 24-25, so they get all of the prime years relatively inexpensively. And players clearly improve as they move up the ranks. But for a player like Rooker, it does make me at least a bit curious to wonder what he would do if he were inserted into the DH position of the Twins line-up. I'm sure he'd strike out a bunch. But isn't it possible he would go all Aaron Judge for 100 at bats in September?
  17. It's funny, I was just thinking about how, as a Red Sock, Joe Mauer would effortlessly bounce the ball off of the Green Monster just about every other at bat. I think that platoon is right. He purposely lets the ball get deep into the zone in order to judge whether it's a strike, and thus hits the ball the other way. It's on purpose, and it's part of the reason why he has such a great career on-base percentage. His line-drive, opposite field, high on-base approach still works just fine from my perspective. And consistently batting second seems like a good place for him. Now, of teams would just go back to playing straight-up defense against him instead of shifting...and he switched to using maple bats...
  18. Site not allowing me to edit. Not sure how many extra bass hits he gave up. And about this Clayton Keisha character....
  19. Ten days on, can we now agree (yes, SSS) that Rooker is doing stellar at high A, what with his Schwarber-like numbers there?
  20. Byron Buxton sacrifice bunting is like a semi-bluff in poker. You have outs (um, bad word choice) either way.
  21. Gagne Fan, BABIP is a great stat to provide, because when a ball gets hit into play, over the course of a season and career, about 30% of those balls turn into outs, no matter if you are Pedro Martinez or Mike Pelfrey. So for those starts, Gonsalves should have given up 5 hits in six innings last night, and five hits in the three (lousy) innings he pitched the other day against Louisville. And if he were pitching in front of the Twins defense, as many have speculated he would have been the last couple of times through the Twins rotation (ahem, Tim Melville), there is a good chance some of the extra bass hits he gave up would have found leather. More importantly, Gonsalves has struck out 22 batters and walked 6 in the 22 innings he has pitched in AAA. It's quite possible that he was let down pitching in AAA against Louisville last week, when he very plausibly could have been making his major league debut (in a wild card race, to boot.) No one has argued that Gonsalves is the next coming of Clayton Keisha's, but here's hoping he gets a start for the Twins in the next couple of weeks, and does well as his track record portends. Thanks for the great write up Tom.
  22. Are we to the point where Joe Mauer (.256/.344/.293 vs. LHP) needs to be in the lineup against lefties just for his defense? Yes, and his OBP.
