  1. 84 ERA+, -0.4 WAR… ugh. And not even a lefty. Was hoping for at least a Michael Fulmer level of reliever.
  2. Just saw that Tonkin is in the Yankees bullpen and pitching very well… not too long after we DFA’d him. Ugh.
  3. It would certainly not be a knee jerk reaction to improve the bullpen…
  4. At least get a reliever or two! We badly need a lefty we can trust with Thielbar cooked and Okert inconsistent, and who knows if Stewart will return to form (and stay healthy). They don't have to give up a whole lot to do that, prospect-wise or money-wise.
  5. It's incredible to me that they tried as hard as they could to have Martin be a SS when it was entirely apparent he couldn't handle it. Didn't have the arm nor the fielding ability, but that didn't stop them. His only true defensive home might be 2B.
  6. I was at a Saints game last week and realized that there were two Diego Castillos on the same team at once. MLB.com calls him "D. A. Castillo".
  7. As one who was attending the game in question, I can confirm Julien looked lost at the plate. Several swings and misses. I believe it was against Ken Giles he had an AB where he got mowed down in 3 pitches and did not look like a professional AB. Gotta hope this is like a Jose Miranda 2023 off year, but I don't know if he is hurt like Miranda was. The OBP is always going to be high, but he has to get the strikeout rate down.
  8. I was shocked when I saw that on Baseball Reference, I thought at first that was his brother Tylor but no, Trevor is back and putting up insane numbers. The Brewers have some magicians in their pitching staff.
  9. If Spotrac is to be believed, we have control of Lewis through 2028 (4 years of arbitration) and he hits free agency in the winter of 2028 and will be 30 in 2029. I've never one to jump at paying a player big money into their 30s, and while Lewis could be an exception given his talent... and then there are the injuries. If he were to hit FA around age 27-29, I would be more interested in an extension. Also given Boras being Royce's agent and Falvine's lack of a track record of signing extensions to players early in their career, I don't see it happening.
  10. I would have never guessed Vazquez would hit a walk-off HR on Hader!
  11. I was at the Saints game, unfortunately it was a clunker as the hitters stunk it up. I was wondering why Wallner wasn't in the lineup, and it wasn't until I saw the Transactions thread when I realized he was called up. Outside of the hitters unable to hit (Julien especially looked lost at the plate), there were two brutal errors - Chris Williams dropped a foul ball in LF to give Gwinnett a run, and Severino had one of the most embarrassing errors I've seen in a while at 1B, where he watched a slow roller bounce off the bag and get past him when he easily just could have gotten in front of it. Got to see Eddie Rosario play for Gwinnett. And I'm also surprised the teams only get 2 challenges using the automatic strike zone. Gwinnett used up both of their challenges by the third inning and didn't get to use any more.
  12. Nice rebound win, feels like its been a long time they've lost a series to an inferior team. Maeda has been pretty brutal for the Tigers, unfortunate to see but not super surprising. The dude is almost 37 now...
  13. Speaking of Joey Gallo, I saw he has a 43% strikeout rate. Maybe once he's healthy we can swing a deadline deal? 😆 It seems like the number of "uncompetitive" ABs have gone down as the season has progressed... though to be fair, since I can't watch games anymore I can't confirm this. But there seems to be less grumbling about it in the gameday threads.
  14. Gallo is on the 10 day IL, but you have to imagine he doesn't have much rope left once he returns.
  15. Polanco with the bunt single... gives me flashbacks of Paul Molitor asking him to bunt in the #3 hole. It comes back to haunt us again!!
  16. I just had a thought back to last year, where a lot of us complained about Correa in the clutch... I must say, he's taken a total 360 in those situations this year. And earning every penny of that contract.
  17. Trying to remember back from the draft day threads, I recall the logic on the Cavaco pick being that he had a ton of upside and had some of the tools to possibly develop into something... whereas Sabato was a likely-to-be DH-only with one tool, that being power. Even on draft day that pick didn't make sense, and while Cavaco was clearly a reach it seemed more defendable to a degree.
  18. That's one way to hide a bullpen! Hopefully Lopez can get his season back on track. Always good to be dominating teams that are clearly inferior. Would also be cool if Buxton could get hot and start hitting.
  19. If we're going off pitchers the Twins drafted, then you have to give them some credit for Cade Povich, who is looking promising for the Orioles. It's impressive these guys are pitching well, but given how many starter prospects have fallen off in this organization (and in baseball in general) it's hard for me to get too positive about it. Only about two years ago I was reading articles about how strong the pipeline was with the likes of Balazovic/SWR/Winder/Sands/Prielipp/Canterino/Enlow and others... out of the whole group, SWR is the only one who appears to be a legitimate starter while Varland and Sands appear to have a chance to be decent relievers, and that's it. There's a reason why "there's no such thing as a pitching prospect" is a thing.
  20. It is surreal to see Ben Rortvedt as a starting catcher in the major leagues...
  21. I do think OPS is a bit overrated with how much it rewards power compared to outs - speaking of Ichiro, he had only a .757 OPS. Arraez has a weird profile with poor speed and pedestrian fielding, but I will take a guy who can hit .320 with .380 OBP any day in my lineup. I wouldn't think about filling a lineup with more players built like him, but with the DH being universal, he is pretty good compared to what many teams are running out at DH. Take into account his hitting tool in clutch situations and ability to take more pitches than the average batter, and I think the modern stats we use underrate him.
  22. Just checking in... very surprised they are getting this game in. I suppose it was just a short stint of very hard rain.
  23. An 8 inning start from Nowlin? Glad to see some starters are actually allowed to have long starts.
  24. The whole reason why I don't classify them as victims is because they were very likely doing their own tampering because all teams do, just not blatantly. The point is that the NFL doesn't care very much about tampering right before the FA window because they know all teams do it, hence the slap on the wrist. You can tell what the NFL does not want teams doing by their big fines / suspensions - they came down hard on the Dolphins for tampering with Payton & Brady who were both under contract with other teams despite being retired, and they give out drastic suspensions for players who gamble on NFL games. They want absolutely none of that and make examples out of rule-breakers, but they don't care much about tampering on players who are about to be free agents. Even if tampering was not a thing, Kirk still would have hit the market and then gotten the ridiculous offer from Atlanta. Stopping pre-FA tampering would only push all of the signings back a couple days, since players usually wait until they see what other teams offer them to properly gauge their market.
  25. Gotta give credit to the Twins, for as much as some of us rag on them, they are taking care of the bad teams and that's not a guarantee in the game of baseball. The hitters are raking and they are fun to watch when they are hot. Great to see Correa earning every penny of his contract, and Lewis' ability to punish pitches is a joy to watch.
