  1. Great topic - lots to respond to. The concept of a decision tree might work with a few players but not a lot. Wallner doesn’t even know the dead ball rule and he is going to effectively judge when game strategy calls for a challenge - don’t think so. Jeffers is really adept at it making his usage far more important than a hitter. I would treat it like stealing a base for the hitters. If you haven’t been given the green light you don’t challenge. That way the manager can decide who and when are the right times to challenge. From a game theory perspective there is almost no time a hitter should challenge at the beginning of the game. Lastly, each club keeps track of umpire tendencies so the catchers can really go to school on where the ump is likely to miss. Likewise, clever pitchers and catchers will note where a hitter has incorrectly challenged a call as it is a sure tell of a hole in the batter’s judgment. Not to pick on Wallner but I believe all his bad challenges have been on balls up in the zone.
  2. That bunt attempt was horrible. The proper way to bunt is to set the bat at the top of the zone. That way you only have to adjust the level of the bat one direction - down. If it’s above the bat it’s a ball. Then you are supposed to “catch” the ball with the bat, not jab at the ball. Well Lee set his bat at waist level and jabbed at it up which of course leads to a popup. The guy is really struggling on both sides of the ball.
  3. Martin beating that throw was huge. I couldn’t tell but he must have been running on that play? On the pick off I assume he just made a mistake but teams do sometimes have that as a play so it might have been intentional seeing as Buck was at third. In any event much more fun to watch than three true outcomes baseball.
  4. If we are talking Falvey I judge him by his entire body of work, not just one trade. Falvey did some good things and some bad things. Overall he was mediocre pretty much like his teams. Taj does provide a new, positive story line to follow which is great. He’s must see TV right now.
  5. Ober did his job. I thought speed was a big factor early in the game with Buck and Keaschall setting the tone - they don’t win that game without it. The bullpen got the job done somehow - Bandas line isn’t great but he had several balls on the ground that found holes. Man Fundy has some games ( a lot of games) where he has no idea where his pitches are going. One thing that is a constant - sloppy baseball. A couple errors in the infield and brain farts from Martin and Wallner. They showed Shelton in the dugout explaining to Wallner about putting your hands up on the dead ball. Mind boggling to me that he he is in the big leagues and doesn’t know the rule.
  6. I noticed this as well. Royce is pretty exuberant when he gets a hit which is fine I guess. Reminds me of Bud Grants rule against celebrating touchdowns “I want them to act like they’ve done it before”.
  7. Jeffers is fighting it back there tonight.
  8. If Jeffers is in a traditional crouch he smothers that ball no problem.
  9. I enjoy Keaschall with the bat more than the glove.
  10. Another bonehead play by a Twins player. You always take the dead ball there.
  11. JFC just make a proper throw, you got all day.
  12. It’s almost as if you have athletic players with a little speed you can make plays in baseball
  13. Not doubting you but that seems impossible.
  14. It’s pretty much Martin and Wallner that botch the challenges, correct?
  15. Unless you are getting some free agent years I don’t think these deals are right for the Twins. The cost certainty is nice but IMO not worth the risk the player gets hurt or doesn’t perform. If these deals go bad it hurts the Twins relatively more because of the tighter payroll.
  16. Interesting point.
  17. The stuff has been there, it’s always been about the control. There has been a marked change in that area and if it continues the Twins have a gold mine. I’m sure Jax will bounce back but if they are both performing at a high level you take Bradley every time. As others have noted Odorizzi was a good deal as well. The Delmon deal was Bill Smith so Falvey doesn’t own that one.
  18. Let’s hope Taj is dealing because we’ll….ya know.
  19. I would also like Mendez and K Rosario to start playing first.
