  1. Just for whatever passes for a record around these parts: I would be highly skeptical of a team with the limited resources of the Twins extending a pitcher for his age 33+ seasons. That is something the rich teams do, because if that pitcher flames out or gets injured, they just sign another guy. I would trade him in the off season if I liked the return; otherwise, I would look to trade him next deadline.
  2. The Twins are HIGHLY unlikely to get Ryan to sign an extension they are willing to pony up. So the analysis is: 1) 2 more years of Ryan for ~$18M plus a comp pick in 2028; OR 2) The value of trade assets he would return. I would submit that Door #2 would and should be a big pile of assets. Whether those assets outweigh Door #1 is the real question for the Twins' FO. Other than Buxton (should he agree to waive his NTC) Ryan is the Twins' most valuable trade asset. If they do trade him, they need to hit a home run.
  3. This is silly to discuss any further. He can't hit. He does not advance the franchise's trajectory one iota. 'Nuff said.
  4. WTF do they see in this guy? Seriously, what is the point? He can't hit.
  5. You could also use Prielipp as a pseudo-starter going say 3 innings and then turn over for an extended bullpen game to continue to build up his innings pitched. Twins have options for the bullpen.
  6. Jacksson, are you suggesting that we are now forbidden from ever trading with the SFGiants again because we had bad luck before? Seems like a bizarre, illogical take. Many teams have had bad outcomes with the Rays, but the Twins have done well. Yet the Rays picked up the phone this past trading deadline.
  7. I agree that this is an intriguing option. Certainly has paid his dues as player and coach in spades. Also bilingual, which makes so much sense with the demographics of modern players. I like him on paper and hope he is interested and interviews well.
  8. Those numbers on runners advancing at a slightly reduced rate on Wallner. Do those numbers account for all the situations where runners had no need to risk advancing because their team was already thrashing the Twins? Kinda like defensive indifference in reverse? He does have a strong arm, but you need to catch the ball first. I think he is destined for DH and occasional OF starts if he cannot play 1B which is what everyone is saying. I still want to trade for Eldridge....
  9. Quick thoughts: Naylor would not take calls from the Twins. He is going to get plenty of interest from contending teams. Alonso? Likelihood of Pohlad ownership paying him a FA deal is zero. Wallner to 1B. Give it a try in Spring Training and give him all winter to work on it. Might save his career. It would be so Twins to sign the Ghost of Paul Goldschmidt late in FA. He is done. My somewhat realistic dream is to trade Lopez to the Giants for Eldridge in some package and literally and figuratively swing for the fences.
  10. That Mets trade would heavily favor the Twins, IMO. McLean has already demonstrated dominance in SSS at MLB level, Jetts is a very highly rated prospect, and why would they want Lee (even though I also advocate moving him if we can get a SS coming back...).
  11. Parker, Counsel is coaching the Cubs. He HAD MLB managerial experience when he was hired by the Cubs. 7/8 with prior coaching. If he were still coaching Milwaukee, 6/8 would be correct, but he is not.
  12. And Counsell did have experience with Milwaukee before the Cubs. But he did not when Milwaukee hired him. So 7/8 had MLB coaching experience. I agree that I want them to hire a coach who has proven coaching track record, please.
  13. We have so many weak players on our 40 man roster it is child's play to make room for guys with projectable talent. Youd could cut the 40 man to 27 or 28 with no loss of actual talent.
  14. If you are trading Ryan to the Tigers, I want McGonigle for Ryan and Lee. They would never do it, but that is who they should get.
  15. I strongly believe Ryan would fetch more trade capital than Duran. Am I way off base?
  16. Next article will ask whether we should tender Joe Ryan or let him walk as a FA.......
  17. I would trade Jenkins for Skubal right now! Are they offering that? :)
  18. The numbers are what they are, but they are obviously skewed by what division each team played in over this time frame: easier to chalk up wins in weak central divisions than on east or west coast. Have only had balanced schedules for very short duration of this compilation. The Yankees have not had a losing season for 23 years. The Dodgers have made the playoffs 13 consecutive years. The rich are going to out-perform the poor. There may be flukes, but money will win out. NFL Salary cap and floor with full revenue sharing, and you won't see this type of domination. Baseball is less inclined to this phenomenon than football, where a QB like Brady can allow a team to dominate for many years. Baseball has no equivalent, although Ohtani is close!
  19. By the way: The Title of this thread should not be roster "trimming". Roster "pruning" at a minimum, if not wholesale re-landscaping.
  20. 3 pages on an ok player who is slated to make more money than he is likely to produce. Keep him, trade him or non-tender him, it will make no meaningful difference to the Twins' future.
  21. If the Twins have to spend money after a tear down to meet the effective salary floor due to existing revenue sharing, I would rather they sign some long-term contracts for their young studs and front-load them if necessary. Spending money on older guys with no realistic future with the team is just treading water. You only sign guys like that to plug a gap in a good, competitive team, e.g., Don Baylor. What good does it do anybody to sign guys like Hoskins or Bell on a .500 team going nowhere???
  22. ERod also walks over 26% of the time, so you need to factor that into the analysis. His OPS was .840 in a down, injured year (not that he has many un-injured years, but you get the point). Larnach's OPS was .727 last year.
