Does Anyone Want to Come Here?
SteveLV replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Leftovers. You know, the ones that get pushed to the back of the fridge and you forget about for 10 days and then notice when you are looking for something else. You take a look and give it the sniff test and cringe a little, but figure it is probably still good. So you eat it, and it tastes off but you survive. That is the caliber of FA's the Twins will be getting. After the Dodgers and Yankees and all the other real teams have skimmed off the cream of the FA crop that is what we are left with. Leftovers. The only real hope for the Twins to be truly competitive is to trade off Lopez and Ryan for youngsters (and Buxton too if he wants to abandon ship and have a chance to play relevant games), play the youngsters and hope multiple ones turn out to be good/great players and HOPE that MLB can fix the sport with a new CBA in 2027 after an inevitable work stoppage. On the new CBA, I had another thought: the new CBA could allow teams that re-sign their own players to pay a higher figure than competitors. In a salary floor/cap environment, that would encourage teams and players to stay married to each other for their careers. And I am convinced a fair MLB will never happen. Unless someone with enormous FU money buys the Twins--and why would they?--we are doomed to a AAAA franchise. Finally, I am simply stunned that the underdog, plucky Dodgers won the WS. Just flabbergasted! Who could have seen that coming? -
Gotcha, I agree, but he would be the headliner as, potentially, a long-term masher at 1B.

The curves/trajectories for Rutschman are all wrong: His salary is rapidly increasing in his last 2 Arb years--then FA, and his play is getting worse every year both offensively and defensively. Why would the Twins want a player who would play in '26, might be locked out in '27, and then is a FA??? That is the exact same problem they have with Ryan. If the O's wanted something like Wallner and/or Julien and/or Outman and/or Miranda and/or McCusker--sure! If they want to take a flyer on some guys who have shown flashes for their own guy who the League has clearly figured out how to pitch to and is now injured, maybe something could be worked out. Otherwise, big Pass by me.

How Low Could the Minnesota Twins' Payroll Go?
SteveLV replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Major League Ready, if the Twins spend $7.5M for a FA relief pitcher I will buy you a lunch! No chance in heck do they do any such thing. They also wont spend $5.5M for another relief pitcher, either. Rest of the numbers look ok'ish. About $85M pending a decision on Pablo.- 63 replies

Mr. NYCTK, do you think the Giants would give up Bryce Eldridge for Ryan? I know you think the Mets would balk at trading McLean. Would the Giants balk at giving up Eldridge?

The Twins and the Illusion of Hope in a Rebuild

It would take lightning in a bottle, perfect storm, planets aligning---pick your metaphor. The deck is stacked so heavily in favor of the large market teams at this point that the Twins stand as much chance in winning a World Series as playing a poker game against Chauncey Billups. (By the way: That Dodgers figure is massively distorted by all the deferred money they are paying out.) Vegas has the Twins at +8000 to win the 2026 series, and they will make money on that. And that is before we trade off more assets this off-season and don't sign anyone with a pulse. World Series?!?! Give me a break. At this point we should play all the kids and enjoy watching a glorified minor league team for the next couple years. And that would actually be a heck of a lot more fun than trying to dredge up more Gallo's to futilely try and be remotely competitive. 2027 is going to be a crucial year for fixing Baseball. Not optimistic, but there is a tiny, tiny chance.....

At this point not sure what they are waiting for? Is there someone on the Dodgers and/or Jays' staffs they are interested in? Otherwise, pick someone already.

The Twins and the Illusion of Hope in a Rebuild
SteveLV replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am one of us old enough to remember the brutal '82 Twins. Lost a million games, but lots of young players learning and adapting to the major league. Hrbek homering in Yankee stadium comes to mind. Viola lost a bunch of games but learned to pitch. The Team lost, but the number of good young players sparked optimism for the future with a core that eventually won the 2 World Series in '87 and '91. I have zero problem following the Twins in '26 and '27 as long as they are giving the young potential star players a chance to play regularly and learn to play the game at the MLB level. What I don't want to watch and follow is the "bargain bin" approach to FA with a bunch of older never-going-anywhere cheap players who block the chance for younger players. Since neither Ryan or Lopez are ever going to see another contract from the Twins, the prudent move is to move them (and Buxton if he wants to leave) and gather as much young talent as possible.- 61 replies

I am asking a question out of genuine curiosity and not a backhanded criticism: Is there any actual real-world evidence that Baseball Trade Values represents even ballpark values for players??? Obviously, each team may see players differently, but have there been any trades where the BBTV numbers corresponded----even roughly--to what went down in real life? Did anyone run the raft of moves the Twins made at last years' deadline through BBTV to see if they were close?

If the Mets don't want to trade McLean, then don't trade Ryan to the Mets as far as I am concerned. They need pitching coming back and I am not sold on the other P's in their system. And I would want MORE than McLean for Ryan. It is certainly possible the Mets will not trade McLean, and that is their prerogative. Just as it is the Twins' not to trade Ryan, or not trade him to the Mets.

Any Mets trade has to include McLean as far as I am concerned. They need pitching coming back.

If you are going to trade him, this is the time to do so, if not last trade deadline. If you want to keep him, this is the time to extend him. But we KNOW the Twins are not going to extend, so it is time to trade if a good offer can be garnered.

What Will Minnesota Twins Do with Matt Wallner?
SteveLV replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think several of us do not think Larnach will be with the hometown 9 come Spring '26. Either traded or non-tendered.....I don't think anyone is suggesting Wallner will be let go, only possibly traded.- 101 replies

What Will Minnesota Twins Do with Matt Wallner?
SteveLV replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it is at best 50-50 that Larnach is with the Twins in Spring Training next year. He may be traded, and he may otherwise be non-tendered. I think he is a decent player, but does not elevate the team. Wallner had a poor year--like the rest of the roster besides Buxton. He should get another shot, but if he continues to struggle he may not be around in 2027.- 101 replies

Let's put it this way: There is only one Twin would be a starter on the Dodgers, and that is Buxton. They are so overwhelmingly talented that even with SSS in the Playoffs they are HEAVY favorites to win the WS. The Twins are utterly non-competitive no matter what "methodology" for roster construction you want to come up with. MLB needs a MASSIVE overhaul in the new CBA or the sport is doomed for the smaller market fans.

The Latest On Minnesota Twins' Managerial Search
SteveLV replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whoever we hire, I want the Manager to pick his own coaching staff. These folks need to work closely together for many hours a day over a LONG, stressful season and have to work well together. If Falvey is going to dictate the staff, too, this could be a recipe for disappointment. People work better with people they know and trust.- 73 replies

The Latest On Minnesota Twins' Managerial Search
SteveLV replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The fact that people like Bochey and Maddon have not reportedly been contacted tells us they are going young(ish) and are looking for an ascending talent who will not break the bank. On paper, I prefer Vasquez. I can't get over the idea that being bilingual is so very important with the make up of rosters these days. Plus, I want an outsider, not someone already working in this system who might be beholden to Falvey's decisions on day-to-day management.- 73 replies
