    Abortion

To me the solutions are pretty clear and I think would fly decently enough with the more pro-choice crowd. There would be a tradeoff of a hard prohibition (probably in the 4 month range) with expanded/free access to birth control combined with increased incentives for adoption, mother's allowance, perhaps a few other things. This will never fly though, for multiple reasons. 1. There is no trust between the sides (to put it mildly). 2. Like many political issues, much more money in fighting for solutions than actually creating them. 3. On the pro-life side, many of my religious brothers and sisters include abortion in a bigger picture of sexual revolution they want to push back on, which would have free birth control as too much of a surrender.
  2. I agree it would help to make it younger, and I suspect it will happen soon, but the bigger issue with the Twins front office is not the slowness of calling up young guys but their poor track record of identifying and plugging in veterans (either through fa or trade - at least in comparison to other teams that were on a similar rebuild.
  3. That's the reality of mlb rosters, you just won't find that many under 26 on any team. For reference, Astros will have two, Cubs will have four.
  4. I agree with this. Cutting bad veterans and bringing in talented young guys is not a sign of defeat. In addition to Berrios and Buxton I would add Polanco, probably time to give him an extended look. Other than Tonkin, not sure there is a reliever all that worthwhile. I expect a little bit of a dead cat bounce at some point, hopefully for them on the homestand, or it could get ugly.
  5. Bingo. Rehashing whether they should cut Boyer and/or Pelfrey or calling up Arcia just isn't doing it for me anymore.
  6. It wouldn't straighten out the "mess" it would be a disaster. And the US is not a mess right now. There will be deficits for a long stretch, but that is certainly manageable if growth remains close to what it has been recently.
  7. They aren't.
  8. On the flip side there are a lot of Justin Forsetts out there. Not all Christians are like Republican Presidential Candidates or Pat Robertson or Franklin Graham or whoever you want to reference.
  9. I personally found the section with his exchanges with Justin Forsett the most fascinating. Seems to be the closest to what I experience in exchanges with people of no faith and should be a model for conversation. Christians should welcome thoughtful skeptics/agnostics/atheists, sharpens their faith and keeps them accountable.
  10. So here's the problem with that line of thinking that you need to consider. There are a significant amount of people in this country that think that easy and frequent abortion is the biggest moral scandal of our time. I'm somewhat sympathetic to this way of thinking. Their thought with these videos is that if people became aware of what happens they will change their way of thinking. The idea is that people are accepting of final outcomes but don't want to think about the process that gets to that point, and exposure to the process will lead to people changing their minds. If you don't think this happens with many other political issues I don't know what to tell you. I don't agree with these tactics and I would pursue a different set of policies to reduce the number of abortions (see my first post), put that is probably true for many different political questions that are out there. All that said, while I acknowledge the benefits of fetal medical research, it is ethically sketchy (to be kind) and I suspect the ethics behind it won't stand the test of time. Also, while Planned Parenthood certainly does a lot of good, and defunding would be foolish (almost certainly would result in more abortions), their hands aren't exactly clean. They don't pay people for abortions but they are soliciting donations for fetuses and I suspect they are corrupt in ways that haven't come to light (yet).
  11. From what I have read from conservative/Christian sites, it seems that the thinking is more that they are trying to raise awareness of what actually happens during an abortion/to the aborted fetuses, thinking that the "middle" on the issue will be more sympathetic to their position. There was a brief time that it was thought this would be the breakthrough needed for the pro-life movement. Since there hasn't been the outrage expected, it is now the liberal media's fault for suppressing conservative ideas. This isn't unlike most political ideas/debates. If only people understood the issue better and the other side/media didn't use dirty tricks to suppress the information, then most people would come around.
  12. I prefer to point out other people's logical fallacies while being blind to my own. World makes more sense that way.
  13. I heard the scouts still use slide rules.
  14. I thought it was obvious I was referring to position players since the post was about SS and C. Reyes might be a tick better but yuck on that contract. No chance I take the other guys you mentioned (other than Castillo). I didn't consider Castillo, he would have been nice. I will take that one back.
  15. Do you think he gets called up ahead of Buxton and Arcia? Barring injury they aren't calling up all three. I cannot remember the Twins calling up a prospect to sit on the bench, and it's not like Hicks and Rosario don't need the reps.
  16. Berrios is the better prospect by a long shot, but it is not unreasonable to think that Duffey gives them a better chance to win tonight and in the next couple of starts. I find it wise to not break in Berrios against Toronto in that launching pad.
  17. Along with 2 or 3 other relievers.
  18. I surprised there haven't been more calls for a return of Vargas. That was such an obvious move less than two months ago.
  19. I'm not sure that is true.
  20. By far the hardest position to fill in baseball.
  21. Why would national pundits even talk about the Twins, boring franchise from a smaller market. Not going to compete with a team with a history like the Cubs or a new way of doing things like the Astros or a team making a blockbuster. Slow builds and conservative actions aren't exactly conducive to clicks and ratings.
  22. We need to start calling you Mr. Questions.
  23. Of course this is true. As crazy as the deadline was only 3 players better than Ben Revere were traded that had more than one year of control. Gomez - not a position the Twins should spend resources for Hamels - no trade clause to the Twins Tulo - there has been some conversation on him Despite the many comments to the contrary, fixing long term holes on a team just doesn't happen at the deadline.
  24. As a Twins fan, I'll take it.
  25. I always think of this.
