  1. You don't think travel and lack of familiarity with the park have anything to do with playing worse?
  2. This strikes me as about the jump you would want. Other ways to control during the season too with skippinh starts, etc. That said, I would almost guarantee, called up now or not, he starts in the minors to begin the season. Really hard for a young arm to start a career in the rotation on opening day and make it through the season. I would have called him up a couple weeks ago, made the start May did and then moved him to the pen. Would have kept the innjngs right. I'm skeptical they call up Kepler if Hicks is back by Sept 1.
  3. I think it really manifests itself most with trades. One of the reasons Ryan doesn't chase arbitrage opportunities as aggressively as other teams might.
  4. Great that they do this, plenty of space on tv for different presentations. And things that work well will probably be adapted by more broadcasts.
  5. There is a difference between learning something new and having a foundation for understanding be shifted. There is a place for soft introductions to some advanced stats (Provus does this quite well imo) but that is quite different than shifting the stats that are cited most often.
  6. I agree with all of this and still would say that the tv broadcast shouldn't really change that much. There is probably value in incorporating the triple slash line and maybe k/bb ratios but even the second is a stretch. If people want to learn more there are so many sources today to draw upon. Trying to satisfy that on the game broadcast would strike me as cluttered and counterproductive and against the main goal of FSN. I take a baseball broadcast as akin to the 6 pm news. Touches on the tried and true, pretty conservative in incorporating new things and lots of fluff. Sells to the most people and if you want to know what's actually happening and have proper context you go somewhere else.
  7. I'm curious, what's the motivation for the angst? Do you want more fans to understand baseball better? Do you want the broadcast better for you? Do you think announcers should be better? I generally think FSN works in the interest of having the most viewers having the most enjoyable broadcast possible to have to the end goal of most viewers total. I'm not certain using newer stats and spending significant time explaining them does anything to advance this goal. I understand the desire to have things tailored best for your interests and/or having more people "educated" to line up more closely with your desires but I just don't see how that can happen in mass distribution like a baseball telecast.
  8. I agree with this too. I don't expect huge changes but it would be nice to add another good bullpen arm. Not a nightmare but I do think there will be one big trade for the Twins this offseason - lots of pieces that could move.
  9. Adding another middle of the road pitcher to a 3-4 year deal. I'm OK with taking one on if they can trade someone else, but they can't add to that number. I think best case for C and SS is a veteran on a one year deal to split time with Suzuki. I hope they think a little deeper than just re-signing their veteran free agents, but they at a point where their best move might be to do less.
  10. I can't remember where I heard it but Cory Provus had a great interview on this topic. He is fully aware of advanced stats but doesn't use all that often because he needs to tell a story that relates to the most fans. The fact is that most fans don't know/care about any stats beyond the basics. The people who spend time on message boards, frequent Fangraphs, etc. is such a small percentage of the people that consume baseball.
  11. I think John Sickels is on the extend Sano now bandwagon: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/8/22/9189335/miguel-sano-superstar
  12. They should make sure to sign him before Harper hits the market. I think he'll be the deal that really shifts the high end. Probably over $500 mil.
  13. Meyer was hurt last year. And the golden age of pitchers you reference is as much myth as reality, many more injuries and shorter careers. We remember the few and forget the many. All that doesn't mean Berrios doesn't shouldn't be up.
  14. Other than no bullpen guys (of consequence)* moved until the week before the deadline. There was no benefit to delaying the acquisitions, but no opportunity either. I think they were a bullpen arm acquisition short at the deadline but to say they should have acquired a bullpen guy in May or June doesn't take into account how the trade market works. *The best guy traded was David Carpenter - really no better than Blaine Boyer.
  15. Exactly, he's a pitcher. No need to play service time games when he is basically ready and the team is trying to win. If he's good enough the Twins can pop him for an extension well before service time becomes an issue. Looking back at the season I think the failure to call up Berrios and the resulting May fiasco will be the biggest and most inexplicable mistake the front office made. Really no reason for any of it.
  16. I agree that it does seem strange they could not have gotten another cheap reliever in the last year of his deal at the deadline. I even think Jepsen and Cotts, while not exactly awe inspiring, would have been an acceptable deadline. If they would have mixed that in with avoiding the May fiasco and just calling up Berrios at the time, the team would be in much better position, going for it with the kids, and still held the prospects for the real push that should happen over the next 2-3 years. Took longer to get there than it should have over the past 3 weeks, but they are more or less where they should be (minus Berrios) for the stretch. Worst case the young guys get some experience they can build on.
  17. I personally thought it should have been Duffey and Berrios with May in pen - but accepted the decision if it meant May was going back to the rotation full time. Alas.
  18. That's fair, potential is a good way to put it. Certainly has the tools to translate into value above and beyond anyone on the roster and probably the organization. I think he gets one more shot at SS and then falls back into a utility guy that can play multiple positions. He can run and has a really strong arm, that can play at multiple spots and that ultimately will have value.
  19. Yes he does, potentially at multiple positions.
  20. The Vargas production was beat to death. In short I think it was deceiving and masked a much bigger issue that was evident in his recall. And on the bigger point, come on, you don't differentiate between a SS and two bats with no defensive value? The bigger issues with Arcia and Vargas, above all, is they got passed up by better players.
  21. They handled Vargas almost the same way they handled Santana. Gave him until mid-May, a quick minor league reboot, another handful of games without improvement and then sent him back down. Arcia is his own unique circumstances.
  22. He went into the season as the starting SS. They gave him two legitimate shots at it and then moved on. I'm not going to argue he performed well, but I would argue that if you think someone has the job you give them a legit chance before you move on. They gave him a chance, they moved on, hence handling him OK. In the bigger picture I was absolutely supportive this season of erring on the side of development for a player if you think he has a future at an organization position of need.
  23. I think this can all be an argument that the Twins handled the situation OK. Seems he got demoted about the right time, maybe a week/10 days late - gave him time to reboot in the minors and then gave him one more extended look. When he didn't improve they moved on. Santana has tools and upside that some patience is defendable and I hope they give him another long look next year if they don't acquire a SS from outside the org.
  24. Rosario is such an interesting player in today's game. He has valuable skills that are not emphasized as much and his weaknesses are generally overemphasized. That said, metrics seem to do a decent job of capturing his value, but along a route that is less travelled. I'm not a huge WAR guy, but even I'll acknowledge that a 2.5-3 WAR guy is good to have on a team, especially while pre-arb.
  25. Twins actually did not lost a series at Yankee Stadium from 2012-14 and had the best road record against the Yankees in the AL from 2012-14 (admittedly 10 games, but still).
