    Term limits

I would actually be tempted to increase the number of Representatives. If more districts combined with an open primary system it could actually increase the ideological diversity of Congress and ideally allow the creation of less rigid coalitions on various issues. Would potentially weaken the power of the party as well.

    Term limits

"Career politician" is not only an easy target but pretty much a meaningless one. Sounds good and tough but in practice wouldn't change anything. There is so much surrounding the actual Representatives (party, consultants, lobbyists) that the actual people themselves don't make much difference. All term limits, without other reforms, would accomplish is expedite the machine of former Congress people becoming wealthy consultants/lobbyists.

    Term limits

I think it would be a race to the extremes for both parties. The nomination process would be that much more important and that is dominated by the smaller number of true believers. Representatives are already afraid of wandering too far from the base for fear of a primary challenge, and that is already with the advantage of incumbency, it will be that much more with even more turnover. Speaking of turnover, this last Congress there were 13 new Senators (out of 33 elected), and 59 new Representatives (out of 435). So 13% new Senators and 14% new Representatives. That strikes me as enough turnover to prove that term limits wouldn't make any difference.
  4. This does strike me as a little of: 1. We have cameras and technology! 2. ....... 3. Perfect strike zone!

    Term limits

I disagree. Unless term limits would magically cause representatives to buck the system that got them elected (and cut themselves off from a lucrative career following their elections). Term limits is very low on the list of reforms needed, and really won't do much of anything to change the system of how people are elected and the incentives they have once elected. It is the long time Representatives and Senators that provide the minimal semblance of moderation we actually do see in the country. It is the newer elected officials that are the most aggressively partisan. What exactly would term limits accomplish?
  6. That's kind of the paradox of Trump. He actually serves a good purpose in the political process but it would be hard to do what he does unless it was an obnoxious, don't give a bleep, kind of person.\ Highly doubtful he sniffs the nomination but I would love it if he can stick around a while. And with the numerous gaffes he has already committed and his support actually increasing, hard to see him going away any time soon.
  7. Cleveland is a game behind the Angels, 3 behind the Twins. Twins need to dominate Chicago and Detroit if they want to make the playoffs. 7-2.
  8. Correct, nothing conclusive. And there probably never will be because teams aren't going to push young arms and smaller frames to figure it out. And it wouldn't matter if there was anyways, as all arms/body types are different and have different injury likelihoods.
  9. I second this thought, Pittsburgh is a great and beautiful city. I had no idea until I got there.
  10. I don't have a problem with any of those moves outside of Santana, and even on that we don't have all the information on how Santana was. And even that didn't matter since they scored one run. The '06 bullpen was really good, pulling Boof bleeping Bonser after he survived 6 innings is prudent, not a mistake. Garza was not especially effective down the stretch after being rushed to the majors and had been shut down, Baker had been hurt and not all that effective when he returned, especially in his last start, and Silva wasn't a good pitcher that year. And not Gardy's fault that was the best DH options he was given.
  11. I agree. The Gardy mismanaged his pen in the playoffs is more myth than reality. He put the right players in the right spots and they didn't produce. Such is baseball.
  12. I think he gets more than David Freese got last year, which was a 4th of and very solid of prospect. Obviously Twins won't target ofs, but think of comparable positions. Maybe a good reliever and solid (not elite) catching prospect. Is that enough?
  13. That is of course the question. Is he what he is this year or will he recapture some of his previous performance. I think there is some possibility of regression back to the previous 8 years both statistically and just human nature. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his dip in performance, other than a worse defense, was based on pitching for a team out of it. Saving bullets and all that. But there is a lot of risk, it is not a great contract, which is why Nolasco has to go back.
  14. It's minimally different with Nolasco. He's going to get a shot in the rotation to start the season. Absolutely nothing wrong breaking camp next year with a Hughes, Santana, Gibson, Shields, Milone rotation and Berrios and Duffey in the minors.
  15. Shields is no longer a great pitcher but would be an upgrade over much of what the Twins can offer next year. I don't buy the Twins have a rotation glut, either on the majors or the minors. Outside of Berrios I wouldn't count on anyone in the minors making a quality start next year. Padres might be willing to deal him because presumably they are looking to reset/reload what they have and Shields, while an acceptable middle of the rotation guy, is overpaid, and there is significant risk over the next 3 years. Twins can take that on if they are able to dump Nolasco. They question is how good is Shields. His k rate is up, though NL probably inflates that. His bb rate is way up and his hr rate is huge. Question is if the bb rate is a blip and if hr rate is a fluke. Target Field can supress lh power, so that would help him, and the Twins of defense should be significantly better than the Padres this year, which would also be a benefit. A move I would make if the Padres are interested in moving him and if they have interest in players like Plouffe/Santana/Polanco/Stewart in addition to taking on Nolasco. And I would certainly expand it if they want to include a catcher.
  16. Just need to squeeze one more year out of him.
  17. I'm not sure it looks exactly like this, seems light for the Padres, but there is certainly a trade to be made between the two teams. I wonder if they might like Santana or Polanco as a way to get back Hedges. And not saying that is the whole deal, but Twins have some pieces to deal and Padres have some that the Twins might want. They also have Benoit on an $8 mil option, might be a little too much though.
  18. You do draw one important distinction though, in reality no pitcher has command without control. But of course the opposite can be true. I can always hit a dart board, but don't often hit the triple 20 I'm aiming for. I can certainly control the dart, but don't have great command of it. At least not until I have a couple more beers.
  19. I guess my question is why is it a problem to be more conservative with a smaller pitcher when it comes to innings jumps? Seems prudent to me.
  20. If Hu sticks for a while as a #4 starter, which strikes me as the 75% outcome, it is a good get for the Rays but certainly not devastating for the Twins. Time value and all that.
  21. With an offseason and spring I could see it. I'm skeptical they go into the season with a locked in DH, especially if they want Buxton to start in AAA. Most likely move is a Plouffe trade.
  22. Gardy is a perfectly fine manager. He'll get out of a team what it deserves to get out of it.
  23. Is this a guarantee of a Plouffe trade?
  24. Leidner doesn't exactly have tons of weapons around him or an especially imaginative offense to run. Can obviously upgrade there but that can probably be said about any position on the team. He seems closer to middle of the pack in D1 but he is going to take far too much abuse this year.
