  1. And the Herrmann trade and moving Hicks to open up space for Arcia (or Sano) and the probable Plouffe Sano swap.
  2. Recent moves suggest the Twins are prioritizing power in their hitters, sometimes at the expense of defense (especially at the corners). Is it possible they are attempting to exploit an undervalued asset? http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/are-we-undervaluing-the-slugger-now/
  3. I agree with this. Signing Park doesn't come close to forcing a Plouffe trade. But trading Plouffe before signing Park does cause a potential problem.
  4. Strikes me as in the ballpark. An established reliever with upside, a decent prospect and perhaps another throw in seems about right.
  5. He also can't trade him until Park signs.
  6. That's all you want for two years of Plouffe? That's a bad return for a half year rental of a setup guy.
  7. What is true and what people think/experience are not often the same thing. People can state things that are factually true and then in response people can look around, have enough anecdotal stories in their head, and vote accordingly. The old adage for elections are that voters are never wrong, and even when they are wrong they aren't.
  8. I really like the system too, and I figure 8 is coming within a couple of years. Seems Alabama and Clemson are locks. The politicking will be interesting if Notre Dame, Oklahoma and a Big Ten team are left. I do think the problem will take care of itself though, all of those teams have tough games left, highly unlikely all get through without a loss. I put it 50/50 Ohio State still sneaks in (assuming they beat Michigan).
  9. You comment to say you don't care? Interesting.
  10. One other thing to add: Here is a link on some analysis on the political situation in Kentucky: http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2015/11/whats-matter-kentucky I can take or leave Drum specifically, but he does link to some other articles which is why I linked this article. I remember after the Kentucky governor election how people had no problem ripping the voters for voting against their interests. What a comically bad interpretation of that election (personal thoughts about the governor aside). The situation is that people who are benefiting from expanded Obamacare or increased welfare (food stamp, disability, etc) benefits are likely not voting, and the people who are voting are their neighbors who work hard, pay taxes, are still struggling financially, and see other people get all kinds of money (out of their taxes) for doing nothing, and they are voting Republican. This is why Democrats are getting crushed all over the country. It really has very little to do with the things that most people spend most of their time debating, here and elsewhere in the media.
  11. My take on the Syrian refugees is that the current situation is more of a temporary situation caused by an (understandably) emotional reaction to a terrible attack. With time and (hopefully) confidence in the vetting process refugees will again be welcomed into the country. And like many things, the backlash against refugees probably has little to do with the refugees themselves and more about frustration/anger with Obama about lack of progress against ISIS and probably even some bad feelings about immigration as well.
  12. Seems pointless at the moment. There really isn't any elected office of prominence where a 3rd party could make consistent inroads. Sadly the better move is to work within the party infrastructure for change that is meaningful. The parties are, at their core, constantly changing coalitions. Work to make a voice heard. Many of us might not like the agenda of the conservative wing that is currently dominating the Republican party, but they work like hell in every election across the country, consistently vote, and bend the party to their agenda. 30, 40 years ago they used to sit around and complain, then decided to actually put in the work to do something about it.
  13. Total numbers of pitchers vs. position players probably prove the point though. Teams are much more aggressive protecting pitchers which would limit the pool. But yes, if a team was motivated, they could make Michael work, but would have to be (imo) a team that has absolutely no desire to compete this year.
  14. I agree, but impossible to know if Marlins might like someone else - they generally go for bigger SP. I personally wouldn't shy away from a package built around Berrios and Kepler.
  15. This is a point that is often overlooked. Very easy to hide a pitcher, very tough to hide a position player with 4 player benches. And usually everyday guys that are kept bring at least one plus tool to the table (usually speed or d), not sure Michael really has this. Fine guy for org depth and may ultimately get some run as a utility guy, but a team would really have to punt that position to keep him all year.
  16. I understand Rosario, but don't really get Landa over Jorge otherwise. I do think it is a pretty small chance that Jorge is ultimately lost. They may lose others, but no one other than Jorge would bother me all that much. EDIT: I saw your velocity explanation. Seems legit to me if they had to make a choice of one over the other. Much better than my baseless injury explanation.
  17. I apologize if it was discussed earlier in this thread - but seems to me a Fernandez trade could potentially include May and/or Duffey (or possibly Gibson) to avoid putting Berrios in. Would almost certainly need Kepler though.
  18. I found that interesting too, I just didn't see Achter as much of a long term asset. But I suppose if you have roster space. Pinto is just unlucky, wouldn't be surprised if he carves out a little bit of a career, but will probably take another 3-4 orgs before he finally settles.
  19. No, this is speculation on my part in comparison to Rosario and Landa.
  20. I think Dean shows that Milone and Nolasco are gone in some way. Protects a little bit with starting pitching depth more than worrying about losing him as a LOOGY. The Rosario, Landa, Jorge aspect of the decision is probably based on things we have no way of knowing for sure (injury status).
  21. I imagine Jorge is not healthy. Rosario vs. Williams was probably the debate.
  22. The QO is such a silly concept. The fix seems pretty obvious and clear. 1. No lost draft picks for signing free agents and all regular draft picks can be traded. 2. Keep (or not) the competitive balance picks as is. 3. Free agent compensation is calculated the same way as NFL. Take net free agents signed (free agents lost minus free agents signed), assign value points to them, provide comp picks based on net value lost that occur after rounds 1-10 that count towards overall draft pool (but can't be traded). The split of the revenue pot between owners and players is a potential land mine in the next cba negotiations, this seems like an easy give up for owners, and makes offseason even better with more assets that can be traded.
  23. I generally agree, giving up good but not elite guys for one of the 2-3 best relievers for three years of control seems reasonable. A franchise like Boston should be willing to do this all the time. Mid-market teams should probably be a little bit more conservative. I also don't fall as neatly into the sabermetric dogma that diminishes the value of late inning guys quite as much as is now generally accepted.
  24. I don't have much to add, but I am pretty sure that the #1 thing ISIS wants is Western military boots on the ground. I would think long and hard before I do the thing my enemy most wants me to do. I say that while also acknowledging that I don't have many other great ideas about what else to do. Saying no to refugees and arming everyone so they can stop attacks (the two things I most saw referenced in response aside from bombs, bombs and more bombs) don't strike me as all that desirable or effective either. Maybe boots on the ground, a "flypaper" strategy, is the best of many terrible options.
  25. I would be shocked too. I still think Plouffe is moved and they sign a RH OF to compete with Arcia to bridge to Kepler.
