  1. Terribly. Too many injuries and not enough young guys stepped up and the best reliever went in the tank at crunch time right when the bullpen looked like it was about the stabalize. Fien was acceptable duct tape for a while I'm not sure throwing 3/15-18 type contracts is a better option but I wouldn't have a problem blowing out Fien and signing a handful of similar guys. Maybe they strike gold.
  2. Had is right, before signing Iannetta and trading for Clevenger. Zunino is now their 3rd catcher. And happy dancing seems a slightly strong description for people thinking he's an acceptable 3rd catcher and slight upgrade on Herrmann and Fryer.
  3. Fien has an option I believe, I would think $1.5 makes it more palatable to either option him or DFA him if he's terrible. I'm personally not offended by starting with a handful of "mediocre" guys to start the season, see what sticks, and then move on if younger guys emerge. That is probably more preferable than locking in to multiple years for guys that have slightly better track records but really aren't much of a sure thing themselves.
  4. And half the ratings.
  5. Harper has a shot at $600 mil. And why not? Lots of money in the game right now.
  6. Slightly off topic but the last response made me think about it. Have the people who complain about Gilmartin actually seen him pitch? I'm not necessarily defending the move but I still really don't care. He's a slopballing lefty who put up a few numbers when properly hidden by the Mets. He didn't get a significant out the entire postseason and likely won't make it through next season. Duensing had a two month run of similar success last year, Gilmartin was just fortunate enough to fool hitters a little longer. Jones has much more upside than Gilmartin ever will.
  7. If nothing else, it's probably time to bring in scrubbing the backs of teammates in the shower.
  8. Without question. Military is the living, breathing example in our country of the dangers of bloated bureaucracy. On this issue specifically the Twins actually deserve some credit. They do nice things for soldiers and veterans and aren't compensated (from what I remember reading). The Vikings are bad and the Wild are the worst.
  9. Comments like this makes one think these minor league free agents ever actually had trade value. I don't see it.
  10. If I lacked a dominant, Kershaw like guy, I think the optimal staff could be: 4 starters for 18 batters or 80 pitches 3 second guys that rotate every third game for 2-3 innings 1 mop up/swing guy for blowouts and low leverage 3 setup guys that can go 1/3-2 innings depending on matchup (with at least one lefty) 1 closer I think we see this type of strategy sooner than we think.
  11. I don't want to comment too much on what people think are and are not big problems, what people think is legitimate. My thought on racism in general is that the country is the least racist it has ever been and will almost certainly continue that trend. What I think we are seeing is historically oppressed groups rising up and attempting to challenge this oppression. That is a good thing but also a messy thing and a destabilizing thing. People are feeling uncomfortable, insecure and uncertain about the future in ways that they haven't in a while and traditional structures are much less stable (as they should be). This insecurity plays well to media companies that are desparate for ratings/clicks and have no incentive to be fair. The ability to take and spread video adds to that as well.
  12. A BA list with 46 players that might get drafted in the Rule 5. Zack Jones is the only Twin to make it. I suspect the rest of marginal guys in the org are going to be fine. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2015-rule-5-draft-preview-names-remember/
  13. True, they don't generally move, which probable means this isn't a very realistic scenario. But thinking about it, Addison Russell would be the closest to Buxton, and he was further away at the time and I would say not as highly regarded (but close). He certainly went for something much less than Fernandez - but most people were pretty surprised by the trade and they were certainly justified in their surprise by events that have happened since. And if it had been a GM that wasn't Billy Beane, he would be getting absolutely destroyed, continually. So not sure if this helps or hurts my case...
  14. The elite of the elite still do. And Fernandez is far from the best starter, has his own issues (as you state). From the beginning I should have been more clear certain teams might not value him as high, but others certainly do. This isn't just about Buxton, it applies to any elite, elite prospect in his situation. I really don't think initial struggles in the bigs hurt value as much as others here seem to.
  15. I'm thinking they get in as a second Big Ten team, especially if Michigan St beats Iowa. If Mich St wins out, any two of the other four (ND, Bama, OK, Clemson) losing would seem to open the door. Not sure anyone else leapfrogs a one loss defending champion.
  16. Stronger prospect than Myers. And Cameron is certainly entitled to his opinion. But you do bring up a good point I didn't articulate and was too strong with. He may not get Fernandez specifically because the Marlins might not value him as highly, but he would absolutely be valued that highly by a significant portion of front offices. So I amend my statement.
  17. Fair points, I used my response to you to address several posts other than yours (I should have included that in my response).
  18. WAR by PA? Yikes. So we are discounting guys that play everyday and pumping up guys that are hurt or are able to exploit favorable platoon matchups? I'll go out on a limb and state teams don't value players the same way. They might not expend assets thinking they can cover for holes but they would take the everyday guy every time and probably by a significant margin. I'm admittedly a WAR skeptic in some ways, but merely lining up a list of players, sorting by WAR, and pretending that represents how teams would value players strikes me an especially poor use of the metric.
  19. He's the top 1 or 2 prospect in the game. Elite, elite guy. He gets 3 years of a slightly damaged ace. Easily. People are vastly overrating the impact of his struggles last year on his overall value.
  20. Way different scenario. Ventura was an egomaniac but empowered competent people and pursued reasonable policies. I don't see that with Trump. That said, I really want him to run as a third party candidate. For all his craziness he raises issues that some percent of the country finds attractive and will force the R and D out their comfort zones and hopefully lead to meaningful debate.
  21. Buxton is easily getting Fernandez, but Twins aren't doing that.
  22. I'll take the way, way over. We'll probably find out soon enough.
  23. No question. Way too many perverse incentives in the structure. And similar to complaints about the economy, much easier to point out the problems and blame others than to propose solutions. But when one party offers neither solutions nor a credible critique, seems pretty apparent which way voters will go.
  24. For the record I wasn't doing a complete breakdown of the article, it just got me thinking there could be gains by swinging back on the defense vs power continuum.
  25. Doubtful. And especially not if you want a mlb player back.
