  1. He was actually good at adding bit mlb players in trades, useless at trading them away, and brutal at managing the most important assets.
  2. Meyer?
  3. I think you are mistaken here. Pitchers and hitters roll differently. They'll have a plan A rotation without Berrios out of the gate and he won't come up until an injury or poor performance. I do think the presence of Berrios will make the rope shorter to pull someone.
  4. Bullpen WAR is beyond pointless.
  5. I realize that is not majority view, it was a response to a specific post in this thread. I'm also part of the call up Berrios now crowd, but have a more specific role in mind for him.
  6. I would be a little surprised, barring injury to others, if Berrios broke camp with the team. I would anticipate a desire to build depth and it is just hard for a rookie to debut in the rotation on day 1 and make it through the season. But I agree super 2 will likely have little to do with when he comes up next year. It had very little to do with the decision this year, more of a nice side benefit.
  7. Or you could see Milone in the rotation and May in the pen.
  8. I really think he could provide value as a 2-3 inning bridge in relief of a poor start to get to May/Jepsen/Perkins, and the shakiness of the current rotation could use someone like that. But man, expecting him to come up and be a really good starter from day one and pitch deep into games late in the season in his first go around the league is such a stretch.
  9. Though it did help the bullpen, and when they tried to put him back in the rotation it really hurt the pen. He might ultimately be a victim of his own success. I prefer May in the rotation but is it devastating if he ends up in the bullpen?
  10. I'm pretty sure Meyer will be back up, 1 er in last 15 ip and representative k/bb. Maybe even Polanco when the Chattanooga season ends. Not sure the Twins would need anyone else with Hicks coming back.
  11. This is nonsense. If they are overturning ~50% of reviews they don't have a problem reversing them. They give preference to the call made on the field and need clear evidence to overturn a call. Very reasonable standard.
  12. In 2003 Beckett was 23 and in his third season in the majors. It's not a similar comparison. You might get a Bumgarner in 2010, but even that was his second year in the majors. Berrios should be up and would contribute to winning games but you have extremely unrealistic expectations of what he would be able to do for the team this year, even if they had managed innings differently.
  13. The best is going to be when Nolasco is in the opening day rotation and Berrios is back in Rochester.
  14. Starting pitchers? Much less frequent recently. Here are the amount of pitchers each year that were 21 and younger and made more than one start in a season. 2015: 2 (Severino and McCullers) 2014: 2 (Walker and Fernandez) 2013: 3 (Walker, Fernandez, Skaggs) 2012: 6 2011: 9 2010: 5 2009: 7 For some reason it has dropped in recent years, so does seem to be the trend.
  15. And to be clear, I'm not even really "defending" Ryan in regards to Berrios, I absolutely think Berrios should be up and they should have shifted course around the time of the May spot start. However, it has to be acknowledged that Ryan's decision is not some huge outlier and franchises that are among the most respected in the game handle similar pitching prospects more or less the same.
  16. Yes. Yes. No longer.
  17. Clearly they wait until 2017, more years of control.
  18. A quick look at the rosters of Pittsburgh and (especially) Tampa both show they could absolutely use another dynamic arm in the bullpen. They are not so stacked they couldn't use arms of those types. It is absolutely winning time for both. Though I do agree and acknowledge the marginal win for Pittsburgh is much less meaningful than the Twins at the moment. Tampa has a history of promoting pitchers, but never have they promoted a pitcher as young as Berrios in this position. They were either college arms or high school guys 1-2 years older than Berrios. So no, nothing in their past suggests they would promote Berrios right now. And comparing pitcher and hitter callups is meaningless in this context, when pushing innings is the primary issue. Overall this strikes me as way too many qualifications to ignore the very simple point that of four prospects on playoff competitive teams that fit the Berrios profile, only one is coming up. And there are few, if any, historical examples of players the age of Berrios getting called up.
  19. Actually there are. Pittsburgh has a very similar (though not perfect comp) situation with Glasnow and aren't calling him up. And Glasnow is also a year older and has many fewer innings this year. I don't think the Twins are a unique outlier, there would have been more of a split than you are allowing here. I still would have called him up. EDIT: And I forgot Blake Snell with the Rays, which is even a better comp than Glasnow. Another guy who is a year older and has less innings and isn't coming up to a team that could use him. So, to recap, 4 teams had pitchers in a similar spot as Berrios and 3 didn't call them up, including the Rays and Pirates, two of the most respected organizations in the game. The one that did was the Yankees with Servino, a franchise in a different stratosphere as these three. Let's not pretend that Ryan is crazy here. I still would have called him up.
  20. It was always a fair trade, and Jepsen has probably exceeded most expectations (though statistically he has generally pitched better in the second half). The issue always seemed that the trade analysis/outrage of the specific move got merged into the bigger frustration of it being the only move. Might be amusing to read through that trade thread again.
  21. One of my jobs requires watching lots of different games very closely and logging each pitch/play - I would say umps are generally pretty solid. While some bang bang plays do get missed and usually overturned, there just aren't that many egregious missed calls, maybe one per 10 games. Home plate umps are actually OK too, better than I would have expected. I would guess no more than 5 calls a game max make me do a double take, and a lot of games I don't even notice. Same national guys (ahem Keith Law) go way overboard and there is much public scrutiny for the occasional dust up, but so many games go along perfectly fine. Ump shows suck but it's a long season with a lot of games and it really is a small minority of umps who engage in that nonsense. And what the hell, it breaks up the monotony a little bit.
  22. Agree with this too. I don't fault them for not planning in spring to develop a plan for Berrios to be making starts in late September/October, but once he and the team exceeded expectations it was time to recalibrate a little and catch some value from him down the stretch. I fully support caution with inning jumps in young arms but there were other ways to use him and multiple times to make adjustments to the plan up to and including the last week. It is hard for me to think anything other than on this situation (and to a lesser extent only getting one reliever at the deadline) that it got to winning time and the front office choked. And this team might still pull it off.
  23. Part of manipulating service time is increasing trade value in the future so in a roundabout way you kind of affirmed the move. That said I don't think this is primarily about service time. But it certainly isn't about doing everything within reason to win and make the playoffs either.
  24. I would have used him more as a multiple inning stack to back up mediocre/short starts. Twins are pretty covered in the last three innings. Could have managed innings just fine and gave him some reps to prepare for next year. Building on the failure to call him earlier just a big disappointment and missed opportunity all around.
  25. This is a fair point, I didn't consider the quickness of a chat, but I would expect more. And innings is not BS, it is generally accepted operating procedure by every single major league team, who have much more clear incentives than someone in a chat.
