  1. AJ does have his moments of awesome.
  2. Agree on all this, yet somehow that trade was infinitely more explicable than the Hardy trade.
  3. If Twins go dumpster diving after anyone, it should be him.
  4. Not fair. Not confounding. Kepler won't do much against mlb pitching, and Arcia brings nothing to the table but his bat, and I would bet on the production of the majority of the season over a brief hot streak a couple of weeks ago. If there was space at DH I would say what the hell, but there's not.
  5. There is certainly a difference between trading your 7th or 8th best pitching prospect and your only catching prospect.
  6. The beauty of baseball is you start with an 80% chance of being right. Now matter how promising the next 5-7 years look and how perfect (or imperfect) the moves, likely they don't make a World Series.
  7. I think it will be more out of desperation than anything.
  8. I suspect we all agree that Toronto is going to blow past everyone and easily claim the first wildcard and possibly even challenge the Yanks. What is interesting to me is the 2nd wildcard. As mentioned in other threads, the Angels are kind of in freef all and Trout is hobbling. Twins are only 1.5 games behind them. O's are a half game behind the Twins. I downplayed their odds, but maybe they can outlast everyone. But they aren't clearly better than the Twins in my mind. This swoon aside Twins can still hang with those two teams. And if they do hang around, no reason they can still pick up an arm or two for the stretch drive in the next couple of weeks. So ends my optimistic rant.
  9. They are better than their record but also a classic construction to underplay run differential. They have a great offense that expands the margin against the weaker parts of opponent bullpens, and they have a weak bullpen that will result in more close losses (11-23 in 1 run games). That is some bad luck in close games but also some cluster luck in blowouts.
  10. I think that is probably the next move.
  11. It was indeed a little slow to get rolling but May is clearly being used as the 8th inning guy right now, even if the recent run of futility has masked it.
  12. I never even heard them quoted so probably weren't even a justification. This was my own sleuthing! I would prefer May myself for all the reasons that have been cited, but it's not like it was an injustice or even bad strategy if May is better out of the pen.
  13. Don't make us bust out The Who again. But yes, no reason to be on the team anymore other than to troll fans. Cut him and bring up Tonkin for the rest of the series.
  14. They used him the last two days, back to back. Probably should have used Jepsen, or hell even Fien.
  15. Adding 3 years to a guy seems like a pretty big exaggeration, especially when you are using at as a point in the context of his debut relative to other elite prospects. Actually looking at ages would show he is doing fine, just a little delayed thanks to his latest injury. And I wouldn't worry too much about what other people are saying about Buxton and his usage. If he stays healthy he's in the bigs.
  16. I also said everything you said is pretty much true, so that should probably answer the question. That said, two basic stats about May as a starter that need to be continually mentioned (and not just excused away) - Leaving aside Nolasco who is out for the year, May has averaged the fewest innings per start and has given up the most runs per inning as a starter. That is about as basic as it gets, so I don't exactly think he is a slam dunk guy in the rotation. I do think he is likely to be one of best (certainly no worse than 4th) going forward, but it wasn't an atrocity at the time.
  17. It was a bad place to leave a successor. The team wasn't in shambles, probably due for a dip for a year or two, but nothing overwhelming. The big issue was that the changes involved two of the best players in the history of the franchise, not exactly setting Smith up for success or fan goodwill out of the gate.
  18. Good comps and I stand corrected somewhat. I found similar guys getting 2-12, 2-15, 3-15 in the past two years, but didn't spend much time researching. Does show that 1-5ish which he will get next year is not outrageous though. But certainly not a deal.
  19. That's life as a more marginal prospect. They protect the elite guys, let the others take the punishment.
  20. Just don't see it if he doesn't have space to play. I would rather they gave some at bats to Arcia and maybe even Buxton some extra reps before calling up Kepler in September.
  21. People should brace themselves that barring an injury or two he isn't going to be called up in September. Buxton and Arcia are ahead of him on the depth chart and they aren't going to call him up to sit on the bench. Enjoy the awesome breakout season, his shooting up the prospect rankings in the offseason, and the fact he will get a good solid look in the spring before being sent down, likely as the first callup if an of/1b/dh is needed.
  22. Why do you keep mentioning 40 innings?
  23. I understand, and that was a failure by Ryan. I take him at his word that he was toast at that time and perhaps couldn't bring himself to spend the money that it would take. I would respond that his recent spending the last two years show this probably isn't a problem anymore.
