  1. Buxton untouchable, bump those two down. I really only trade Berrios for a controlled starter. Kepler not for a rental.
  2. Absolutely. "Red flags" might be a little strong, he is still young and adjusting, but this isn't some dominating performance no matter what the era might be.
  3. That's kind of a stretch. It was Smith's 4th year. Basically the entire bullpen left and wasn't replaced, he let Hudson leave and salary dumped Hardy to roll with Nishi and Casilla as his middle infield, he ran back with Thome, doubled down on career years of Young/Valencia and counted on Morneau and Nathan for bigger roles than their injuries should have. I'm not saying this all should have equaled 99 losses, but that was a disaster offseason leading into 2011, coupled with really bad luck.
  4. I would say significant trades. Smith was actually pretty good at adding minor pieces. But significant trades are obviously what bury a franchise over the long run.
  5. Garza, Bartlett for starters. He helped create a Tampa Bay powerhouse.
  6. Development and management of assets counts for something no?
  7. Ryan didn't leave the franchise in the best shape, but there certainly was talent on the roster (a lot of which was squandered in trades).
  8. You keep going back to one small part of a GMs job. And it is focused on the straight money side, where he has obvious limitations relative to other franchises. He has also: Turned over minor league coaches Brought in a new Farm Director Overhauled the medical team Hired a new manager and most of a coaching staff Enhanced analytics department And this is just a short list of the top of my head You know, created franchise infrastructure.
  9. Smith was great except for the epic collapse and franchise in shambles from top to bottom by the time he left.
  10. This is a different world than those 17 years. Half that time was spent cleaning up the messes of other GMs and the rest was spent being hamstrung by low revenue/cheap owner. He is on a different standard now.
  11. The flip side is he hasn't leaked talent either. Isn't it possible (likely) that he saw a wave of talent coming and wanted to rebuild the infrastructure of the franchise to put them in a position to be successful. That's a huge part of the job of the GM.
  12. Based on the ideas people propose here on a daily basis, it absolutely is fair.
  13. I won't defend him because there is no evidence either way. But that is quite an assumption.
  14. But the Padres did something. Isn't that what half the people here want?
  15. I would say maybe give him a chance? This season is the beginning of something Ryan has never been a part of in his GM tenure. Perhaps he is a up to the task? Probably deserves a little longer than the day before the trade deadline for full judgement.
  16. It's like the weather, goes in cycles. When Ryan makes a trade and the Twins take 3 of 4 from Ms people will calm down again.
  17. I think realistic goals is to be in the hunt for the playoffs most seasons and then to aggressively push when the opportunity presents itself. They are well aligned for the first part going forward and don't think this is the year for the second part.
  18. He's absolutely correct. I also think the Twins expected at least one of Pressly or Tonkin to be contributing right now. Ryan should have done more but very little broke right in the bullpen over the course of the season. Which is why it would be amazing if he didn't trade for an arm or two.
  19. Neither is Dozier. And Rosario isn't playing IF.
  20. I wonder if players realize the deadline is July 31 or also think it has already passed.
  21. I think the system has one elite untouchable, one near untouchable, some solid prospects that have value, and a lot of depth of C+/C guys. Another thing the Twins have are young guys on the mlb roster that have good value - much, much more than any of the previous 4 years. Twins have the pieces to get good rentals and good guys with lots of money (Tulo), that isn't the issue. The issue is whether they want to pay the prospect price.
  22. I could go either way - but I do think we should wait until at least after the all star break. I also think if they were muddling along at 500 and playing kids people would be more happy. Funny how that works out.
  23. Sano will obviously graduate, but I also think Kepler sneaks in the top 100. I thought 4-6 would be about right in the offseason rankings.
  24. Agree on that. Which makes trades like that rare.
  25. Agree with this. I wouldn't trade Sano for Lucroy.
