  1. Funny, they started trading more prospects as they got closer to Target Field.
  2. They had plenty good bullpens for a long stretch in the aughts. I don't buy it is anything systematic. I think the best explanation is that the pitching depth collapsed so spectacularly in 2011 that they haven't had the excess pitchers to move to the bullpen. As you suggested there are now finally some options. Personally at this point I would add from the outside for the stretch run but I would be pretty surprised if there isn't some significant improvement next year.
  3. Agree with all of this. He's a good pitcher but not an ace, nice to have in the rotation, unlikely to find 5 better guys, but could be a trade option if he fills a hole for multiple years. A couple bad starts in a row against the best teams in the league does not lead to concern, seems more like a reality of a pitcher of his ability. The timing was a little unfortunate though.
  4. But I agree with the previous post that May is probably not long for the bullpen this season.
  5. Wait, they finally use May as an 8th inning setup guy, as requested, and people are still complaining?
  6. Small point, and I know what you meant, but I chuckled a little when you said his xFIP improved when he struck out more people. You don't say! Almost as informative as saying his k/9 went up when he started striking out more people. But he does show that striking out people generally leads to a better ERA and better performance overall. What a concept.
  7. I also think if they were truly soft they would have been buries 3-4 times already this season. Maybe this is the stretch that finally kills them, but I'll wait until it actually happens. They were a couple of Perkins blown saves from a winning record over that stretch, which would have been impressive.
  8. He said exactly what I said. My job doesn't produce data that is used by mlb (it is for other sources for other purposes) so it doesn't even matter what our output is as far as pitch f/x is concerned. What I'm saying is that the exact same pitch can be logged as different types from pitch to pitch and especially from start to start. So if you are looking at different pitch usages from year to year or even start to start, it is from inconsistent pitch logging. I was trying to provide some context for people that are looking at pitch type and potential differences from year to year. They do a very sound job with speed, location and break - because that is the automated aspect of pitch logging. The human part, pitch type logging, is extremely inconsistent. I'm not saying I'm "better" I'm saying their logging often makes no sense, unless you think the same pitch with the same speed and same break should be classified as different pitches. Pitch f/x is fine, but for pitch types you might find more variance than you would think, and it is perfectly possible, if not likely, that Hughes hasn't actually done anything all that different in the comparisons that you are making.
  9. But how many of these are upcoming free agents? Pelfrey and Hunter aren't getting you enough in prospects to justify a trade when you are up 3 games in the wild card. Anyone else can be traded in the offseason for basically the same return.
  10. I blame lack of energy.
  11. Are you sure on the last sentence? At the time the Rangers offer for Lee topped anything the Twins could do. So there is no way to know either way.
  12. Berrios is much more valuable than Finnegan right now. I would take him over the three. Good for the Royals for going for it but I would find a similar trade by the Twins to be foolish this year.
  13. It's not about cost as much as filling a need the Yankees currently have. And Twins shouldn't be acquiring prospects at this time either. Offseason if anything.
  14. As good as any other agent? Boras has proven he'll take the Pohlad's money.
  15. Don't let jimmer see this.
  16. What I'm saying is if the output from pitch f/x is the same we get in real time on mlb.com then the pitch identification is very inconsistent. Direction, spin, location are probably acceptable. One of my jobs is to track every pitch and use pitch f/x as a check. Their pitch identification leaves something to be desired. If this is the data that is then ripped for the pitches you cite above, that would explain some of the questions you have.
  17. I don't buy this reliever narrative as stated above. Perkins and Graham were locked in. Fien, Thompson and Boyer were pitching above their ability early in the season and the Twins wisely rode them. Duensing was obviously bad but it seems the patience was rewarded. Stauffer not so much but they moved on. This leaves one clear spot as well as occasional 8 man bullpen and injury replacements. Th is is where they used Pressly, Tonkin, O'Rourke, Thielbar. Just because they haven't dipped into the next tier down doesn't mean it was a mistake. They went after wins aggressively when they had the chance. It was the right move.
  18. I'm not 100% how they pull pitch f/x but if it is the same service that mlb.com uses there is reason to be suspect on how they differentiate pitches. The publicly available data might not be the best, but should at least be directional.
  19. Don't fly ball guys generally have lower babips?
  20. I would personally include Sano in discussions of RH power.
  21. He's also 7th in innings and has the lowest bb rate, so not devastating. Would help if he cut the hrs a little.
  22. Finally got their energy back.
  23. This started right when there was some concern about a dead arm. Good to see he is savvy enough to battle through that. Also seems Twins have protected him.
  24. There have been long, intense debates about much less.
