  1. 7th seems about right. Right on the border of getting his number retired.
  2. Like many things, they started paying more as soon as Target Field was on the horizon.
  3. Out of curiosity, what are you basing this opinion of Ryan on?
  4. One of those price points is not in the same stratosphere as the others.
  5. I overstated my point. I think there are a handful of teams up top, a big bunch in the middle (with the Twins) that are bunched together, and a couple of stragglers that the Twins are mercifully no longer a part of.
  6. I would too. I would even overpay a little for Lucroy.
  7. I think people would be shocked if they knew the staffing of all front offices. We (rightly) focus on the top 5-6 teams and compare them, and the Twins clearly aren't in their league, but there is a whole big group of franchises that have a handful of guys at most. I also remember Ryan saying something to the effect that scouts have to do some of the advanced analysis themselves (or presumedly executives in the scouting department). It can be hard to compare personnel directly because organizations do split the labor differently.
  8. The Twins were obviously, embarrassingly late to the party involving statistical analysis, but I have always figured they were at worst middle of the pack over the past couple of seasons. They just don't advertise as much as some organizations. Good for them for getting some information out. I do think there have earned their skepticism (if not outright hostility) on this. And lots of work still to do.
  9. Or maybe they were legitimately trying to win. Seems to have paid off.
  10. Fair enough, I was referring to conversations on the board - I shouldn't have assumed you were referring to offline conversations. If you were getting slammed for a reasonable suggestion you probably need a different sounding board.
  11. Nope, that was hyperbole meant as a joke in response to the fact there really is no consensus to what the Twins should do. I don't think Ryan can win.
  12. Indians play under their abilities almost every year. Maybe we need a new metric of what actually represents a teams abilities. But I do agree with you the window is not huge at the moment, mostly because the Twins aren't clearly that good. The opportunity is there and the Twins are probably the team best positioned in the division to take advantage of it.
  13. Neither will unicorns and other mythical creatures.
  14. Top 3-4 starter available last offseason. Are you implying the Twins fail because they haven't outbid the absolute top teams for free agents. Unrealistic.
  15. Absolutely would have approved of a Cliff Lee trade in 2010.
  16. I've never bought that Lucroy or Tulo are available in anything but an egregious overpay that would theoretically make any player available.
  17. I appreciate drama as much as anyone, but no way you were slammed in that debate. I'm sure people disagreed, but many people were advocating the same thing.
  18. This strikes me as more myth than reality right now, and the little bit it reflects reality is probably more in arb and fa salary. Good relievers, closer or not, are valued - and they probably should be. And Oakland is really an outdated example to cite, they have bought more closers recently than sold.
  19. I am quite confident that no matter what they do everyone will be complaining. Should be a fun deadline.
  20. Isn't there a balance between your definition of conservatism and trading their best prospects for a rental? This, like many things, is probably people talking past each other. And biding on elite FAs will almost never happen for revenue reasons, or if they actually get someone like Santana there will be a shifting of the goalposts of what actually defines "elite."
  21. I look forward to it too. But I do not look forward to a Cueto type trade because I wouldn't approve.
  22. Meyer has pitched in relief every appearance since he was sent down to Rochester. I think they are trying to groom him. And the other relievers have all been terrible - why would you promote them, much less make them a closer?
  23. I would expect similar talent to increase at roughly the same rate as league as a whole, which further indicts how far the Twins fell in regards to bullpen construction.
  24. So you want to go down this road again? McPhail was so aware of the changing economic landscape that he jumped ship. Comparing 1991 to say 2005 is comparing two different sports. So yes, it is all about the new stadium in the context of baseball's economic model post 1994 strike. Though that is starting to change with the increases if pooled resources. 1995-2012 was a terrible time to be a low revenue team.
  25. I won't defend the Lohse dump, but for both of those Morneau injuries (especially the concussion) there is no way they could have predicted he would be out for the year. To criticize them for that is the worst kind of hindsight - especially since in 2010 they didn't have a hole in the lineup.
