  1. You'd rather the Twins fail than succeed? I don't buy this for a second. They get Tulo, doesn't get them quite over the hump, hamstrings them from making other moves, then people complain that they don't do anything. I ran this by a couple of my non-Twins fans but savvy baseball guys and they chuckled at the thought. Made no sense in their mind from any angle other than the purely emotional.
  2. Most seems like a stretch. Hunters might not use the whole animal completely efficiently but they will likely eat the meat and maybe use some of the hides. I'm not a huge hunter but I have never been around one that doesn't eat what they shoot unless it is complete varmit hunting.
  3. I'll give Beane credit, he has done very solid work. Didn't mess around, moved the guys that he needed to move, and got solid returns. Do think this will lead to a little bit of a longer downturn than usual but they are reloading.
  4. Great trade. Several people were supportive at the time. Others, who assumed Tampa Bay and Friedman could do no wrong, weren't as supportive.
  5. I find it hard to believe this board sorts into lazy extremes. If people think of this in a straight linear ways that's their problem.
  6. Indeed. Great use of those resources. No argument. But the other key is they cashed them in at the right time when the core was in place.
  7. With the farm system they developed.
  8. Nothing is perfectly linear in any plan, but they were in the World Series last year and have the best team in the league this year by a significant margin. I would say the plan worked pretty well. There is probably some good examples of overly relying on an elite farm system, but this would be the opposite.
  9. That was half the story. That opinion was not near unanimous or even close.
  10. Uh, no. Their C, 1B, 3B, LF, 3 key RP, 2 key SP all homegrown. Their SS, CF acquired by flipping their best player (Greinke) before they were ready to compete. Their 2B, key RP, key SP all acquired with prospects. This is a classic model of building within and using a farm system correctly. One big trade, great farm system and supplement with some small free agents. Exactly how the Twins are rolling if they are patient.
  11. I come to the exact opposite conclusion with the last sentence. They developed a top farm system, let it marinate, and then traded from it as the core was coming together. Brilliant small market management. Royals seem a poster team for exactly why it is NOT ridiculous to follow/rate a farm system.
  12. Sure in that they aren't Buxton or Sano. But would have been equivalent of Berrios and May, perhaps even slightly better. I'm not sure how Reyes is valued but can't be much. Twins surely could have done it but would have clobbered their meager pitching depth.
  13. Got to admit, I didn't think the Rockies were all that serious about trading Tulo unless they were blown away. It is an OK trade for them, but certainly doesn't blow anyone away.
  14. Probably not much if the Twins take on the whole contract.
  15. The pitchers are good (Hoffman is way up from preseason) but the Reyes part makes me wonder. He seems to have negative value with that contract. Rockies do clear $50 mil overall though.
  16. I'll give you credit, you never offer short in your trade proposals.
  17. Twins could have matched the pitchers - Berrios and May - but I'm not sure how the Reyes part of the equation works out with the Twins. I'm sure the Rockies would rather of not picked up a player with that contract. It's a massive Howitzer, but this is about the last bullet, all in that the Jays can go.
  18. I agree he should be and barring injury he will be over current alternatives in the organization. That said I could imagine a scenario where they sign a Santana-like free agent and keep him in the pen but that is unlikely unless they can swap out Nolasco.
  19. FWIW, Law did a writeup and thought the Mets gave up way too much. Maybe not a terrible plan to try and wait out the market. And yes, it seems Gonsalves is the right comp. I wouldn't give that up for a bullpen rental. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=4154
  20. May and Nolasco will round it out to start the season. I'm already chuckling thinking of the response on the board when Nolasco is in the rotation to start the season and a dominating Berrios is sent back down.
  21. I'd also trade Hu in a second for Clippard. I wonder what the Twins offered, if anything. Interesting enough Ryan all but guaranteed the 25 would be different on Aug 1. Must have aomethingsomething planned, but Clippard would have been nice. Maybe the As didn't want anything.
  22. Unfortunately no one in this thread. If you do believe that trading Perkins would be prudent.
  23. With International FAs I wouldn't mind busting the budget over 3 years, but I also accept spending the cap each year. I don't mind a mix of strategies from year to year depending on how they value players, but the key is they should spend the cap. I don't know if anyone has the exact figure, but they more or less do that, don't they?
  24. I would certainly agree with the first sentence. It would be really disappointing if they are just playing lip service. Ryan just has never struck me as the type to do that. He is certainly conservative and methodical, but that is different than stubborn and dismissive. And this is off topic - but Correia was in my mind a perfect storm of Twins desperation and the worst free agent market of the decade. The Pelfrey re-signing is what has given me the most pause of all his free agent moves.
