  1. Is there a study on effectiveness? The issue that comes up for building up innings is effectiveness later into games and later into the season, not just injuries. May is a great example, as he is building up innings he is far and away last in innings per start among Twins starters this year. And what is proven from that study is that previous injuries are the best predictor of future injuries. But of course it says nothing about what can best prevent the first injury (but in Carleton's defense no one knows).
  2. It would take something the Twins don't have or aren't selling.
  3. I hope the Twins aim a little bit higher for a potential bullpen addition.
  4. I'm probably not going to add reliever wins to the stat line.
  5. Much more likely this has very little to do with why Duffey or Rogers is not up yet. I think for someone like Arcia the time is close, but I don't think they want to jettison someone with value like Robinson just to get a couple more games with Arcia over 2 weeks. A great prospect like Berrios will probably be more like Sept 1, as a means to keep innings up and put him in a position to move to the rotation if the need comes up. He could certainly be a dynamic weapon out of the pen down the stretch.
  6. I would trade Gonsalves for anything better than a bullpen or corner bat rental and not feel bad about it. If the Twins desperately needed a starter I would have had no problem trading Gonsalves for Kazmir.
  7. I'm not hesitant to use unproven guys if they are good. I just don't see it with the internal guys being mentioned outside of Duffey and Berrios, and I'm not calling up Berrios until late August unless he is replacing a starter. For who to replace - I would say Boyer is DFAed, and then May is either sent back to AAA or Pelfrey is flipped and May is back in the rotation.
  8. I agree with the Berrios plan. The other part is he is probably the starter that gets called up if a need arises. And keeping him as a starter might make it possible to flip Pelfrey and move May back in the rotation. It really isn't a dilemma to make space for Duffey if he is ready.
  9. I'm sure the Twins agree with this thinking, which is why they haven't given up on Fien or Duensing yet. Boyer is gone as soon as everything shakes out.
  10. I would agree with the last line. I think it is a great trade for Houston, but that certainly doesn't mean it's lopsided or even bad for Oakland. I think it shows there are trades to be made, maybe even something of a buyer's market.
  11. So taking another look, my bigger issue with May out of the pen is that, even if take out the 3 run bullpen game, is that he has been so meh. 6 ip, 8 h, bb, 4 k Maybe they haven't expanded his role or put him in higher leverage situations yet because as they have tried him out he hasn't done anything to prove he deserves them. If he had come in and blown people away they probably would have given him something more.
  12. Considering Oliveros is hurt, hasn't pitched in a month, and was pretty mediocre leading up to that, probably about time to stop mentioning him as an option. Duffey sure, why not, but the other two aren't exactly going to move the needle a whole lot. Rogers hasn't been all that great against righties so why replace O"Rourke and/or Duensing, and Tonkin is clearly better than Achter.
  13. I do wish they would make up their minds on how they want to use May. Does seem to be some limbo until the trade deadline. I do fear, like most things, some interesting usage patterns have led to people overstating May's talent a little bit.
  14. To me the logical internal guys to move into that role were Tonkin and Pressly. Tonkin got some chances and didn't do much and Pressly got hurt. I just don't see the AAA guys as coming in and being overly effective. Has to come from the outside and those guys haven't moved yet.
  15. If only they had traded for Kemp.
  16. I consider it more analyzing real options based on a real roster instead of advocating theoretical moves involving players that don't exist. But yes, the lineup is clearly better with Sano.
  17. Looking at the FAs from last offseason, these are pretty close to the options. Not sure where this magical pool of better available players is located. Twins went into season with Hunter and Arcia as starters with Rosario in minors as backup, and other bench guys as more emergency options.
  18. Agreed. Which is why they came up with Hunter.
  19. Or the Twins would have have been trouble with Arcia's annual extended trip to the DL. Unless you really like seeing Robinson and Escobar in the OF.
  20. Fien has an option, Boyer isn't long for the team, and Duensing is pitching just fine recently. These aren't problems. More to the point, the reason Fien is considered a liability is that he pitches the highest leverage innings. Calling up someone from AAA to take these innings would just change who the liability is. Twins really need to bring in someone from outside the org and push Fien into more of a 7th inning role and he'll be fine. Fien is good enough for a role in an mlb pen, just not as he is used. Boyer not so much.
  21. Yes indeed. Probably not go crazy and trade the best prospects for rentals, but BUY BUY BUY
  22. I think we can all agree it's time to get rid of Richardson.
  23. Thank goodness the Angels were slightly lower energy today than the Twins.
  24. I would really, really disagree with that Hicks description, and could go either way on the Santana/Dozier play. Still seems like extremely flimsy evidence to indict the entire team for a lack of energy. I would still call it not getting a hit with runners in scoring position.
  25. Rope for Hunter because I'm not convinced Arcia/whoever comes up and matches out of the gate. I would gave an extra game or two a week and see. The Plouffe leave comes very soon, I wonder if that triggers Arcia and other adjustments with the trade deadline. Just seems there is going to be a handful of moves in the next week.
