  1. Agree with this. It is a solid group, but nothing especially special. Get excited about arms when they are healthy and have success in AA. Or to put it another way, one of these arms is not like the others.
  2. I think that is fine in theory, but I would be adamantly opposed to anything that provided an incentive for more abortions. Providing aborted fetuses for research opens out all sorts of potential for corruption.
  3. I think a couple of decent postseason performances (and especially a title) would cancel out a lot of the negativity the last 4 years built up in the minds of voters.
  4. Based on this reasoning, wouldn't the same apply (on a slightly different scale) to moving the best hitter from #3 to #2? The NL and AL are slightly different scenarios because of the pitcher. There is logic in not having your best hitter within 2 spots of a black hole, which is why Maddon probably bats his pitcher 8th and his best hitter #2. I think the era of a #2 hitter whose primary responsibility is to advance the leadoff hitter is over.
  5. A nice rule to consider is having your best hitters getting the most at bats. I would not have Dozier bat any lower than 2nd. The sabermetric argument for not having your best hitter batting 3rd is that there will be a higher frequency of at bats each season when he will be up with 2 outs and no one on base relative to other top of the order lineup positions. Having a hitter with OBP and power bat 4th will come in handy for driving in high OBP hitters in front of him and also the certain amount of times he leads off the 2nd inning (higher OBP). With Dozier and Sano, the Twins almost have prototypically modern 2 and 4 hitters. Buxton will probably be a great leadoff hitter very soon and I think Mauer is fine as a 3rd hitter. Lots of OBP with those 4. From there you probably just stack the best hitters in order with some adjustment to L-R matchups, and you usually want a better hitter (especially if they have some speed) batting 9th than 8th, so makes sense to go catcher 8th and Santana 9th.
  6. This month, and I actually think any day now.
  7. Absolutely agree that Buxton will replace Robinson in that role, but might not happen until September.
  8. But I would add as well that when Plouffe goes on paternity leave that Arcia will likely get the call with Sano playing 3b. Maybe he'll hit enough to force them to keep him up.
  9. Until later in the year or next year. I think Arcia getting everyday reps in AAA and waiting for an everyday spot is not the worst situation at the moment. He will get his chance. And Robinson is perfectly fine as a defensive guy, pinch runner and occasional starter against lefties. Pretty much the exact opposite of what Arcia brings to the table. Ruesse brought up a good point a couple of days ago that if Molitor wanted Arcia the front office would bring him up, but I imagine Molitor values the various skills Robinson (and others) bring to the table over the better bat at this point.
  10. From all accounts the development of his changeup coming into the year was a little ominous, so it's probably appropriate. But of course this is all speculation, "fooling around" could mean a handful of throws to see if it was comfortable and moving along quickly.
  11. I would trade Kepler way before I traded Plouffe. I like Kepler but he is more than a year away and his most likely outcome is an oft injured tweener. Either way not enough to get Vogt.
  12. Clearly another wasted first round pick by Terry Ryan.
  13. He needed some sort of changeup if he was going to be a starter and the other grip wasn't working. Maybe he has big hands so it was worth a shot?
  14. Of course it wasn't the reason, but let's also not pretend that this is the reason he continues to be bad on defense. People never tire of excuses for young players not performing other than the player himself (not saying this is you, just the context of the entire conversation).
  15. Van Mil was traded in 2010 for Brian Fuentes.
  16. I wonder why Buxton no longer qualifies but Sano does, unless they created the list before the callup. Ironically, it will be likely that Buxton will be eligible for the end of the season list while barring massive injury Sano won't. As I suspected, Stewart still above Gonsalves on merit and Hu not in the top 10. They are higher on Walker than I would have thought, but hard to argue. Still a very solid top 7.
  17. Abortion is a terrible, terrible thing. I'm really bothered that it has gotten to the point where there can be no moderation or nuance in discussion on how to prevent the maximum number of abortions - starting with cheap/free birth control and a secure safety net for mothers, to significant adoption credits (on both sides), to laws that restrict the most barbaric practices (such as quoted above) and perhaps even hard stops in the second semester outside of danger to the mother or perhaps proven abuse/incest to the mother (and even that I waver). It seems much of the movement (both ways) happens in sneaky ways with huge battles over even the most low hanging fruit ways to prevent actual abortions.
  18. Russia will now be able to sell weapons to Iran funded through assets that are unfrozen.
  19. Other than it being an easier position?
  20. The links don't line up, no link to this year. I thought his analysis on the Suzuki catch last year was atrocious. Guerrier missed his spot by 6-8 inches, there is no way Suzuki could have minimized his movement all that much - just happened Guerrier missed more into the zone not away from it. Some umps will still call the zone true but many will not reward a pitcher who misses by that much. I would go 30% ump, 65% Guerrier, 5% Suzuki.
  21. But their weapons markets are currently a little dry.
  22. Probably only delaying the inevitable, but China doesn't want to deal with the fallout of a NK collapse (refugees, etc) and they are terrified (rightly) about what NK leadership might do on the way out.
  23. By this definition aren't all trades supply trades? Do teams trade guys and create holes in their rosters often? Teams probably engage in arbitrage more freely than the Twins, but I'm not sure it is sell high in the sense that it is being described here. I think that is mostly a myth because it is more of a zero sum transaction than a mutually beneficial trade that most are.
  24. Span and Revere were absolutely sell high situations. And trading a guy with at peak value with years of control left vs. flipping guys on the last year of their deal (Ryan also didn't trade Delmon) is such a different calculus. I agree he does not go out of his way to sell high anymore now that he has more financial resources, but I'm not sure if that is a bad things. Track record of those types of deals are mixed.
  25. There are certainly questions/concerns with this deal, but it does seem most knowledgable opposition comes from sources that want war against Iran.
