  1. Right, and I'm sure the marketing gurus with the Twins know more about this, but I worry our revenues are going to start dropping right when we need them most. An investment or two, slightly prematurely, might be a factor in keeping that base excited.
  2. Those of us that aren't radically skeptical about most all baseball insiders, rumor sites, and journalists have some facts to work with. It's just, for whatever reason, being dismissed in favor of speculation. The Pirates got cash in another deal and gave up a better prospect. That could be because of the players they dealt for, but it's counter-intuitive that you would receive more in the deal (cash) and not correspondingly give more in return. That's essentially what your position boils down to. But we don't know and, to me the real issue, is that neither do the Twins because they never even entertained the idea by all reports.
  3. One thing that might be something to chew on jorgen....at some point next year the All-Star game won't be a factor for keeping season ticket holders and the only things left keeping people there are Target Field and the team. If the team is awful again, how much longer does the awesomeness of TF keep people buying season tickets and not just individual tickets? Or stub-hubbing it to a game? It's possible Sano or someone might be up to generate a buzz for the team...but maybe they need to make a signing just to keep people invested and not feeling cheated. Just throwing out something to chew on.
  4. By all means, present the facts you have for your opinion. You've been asked a few times but thus far your contributions to the discussion are basically to ignore what is factual and focus on the speculative. What is a fact (assuming you don't completely throw out every report by a journalist/beat reporter/accepted rumor site) is that we made money an issue. Not only do I not deny that the value may not have been all that different - I went so far as to call that a "valid issue" and "may not have changed much". I thought I had stated that fairly clearly. But by no account - national media, local media, the local manager, or the deal that was ultimately done - was paying for his contract even on the table. There is ample evidence of this. Would it have mattered? Maybe not - maybe even probably not. But if it's never on the table....isn't that leaving some value out there? I'd kind of like to know why organizationally we don't seem to entertain the idea. There may be a good reason for it for all I know, but it's tough to swallow when ya get a crummy return for a beloved player. (And, I should add, there is a chance that option may increase the return. If even a remote chance)
  5. I won't directly respond but try to say it another way in hope of clarity. The Pirates knew that if the Twins were going to trade him it would be to them. They knew other teams were put off by the money owed and the refusal to pay it. THey held out hoping the Twins would cave on the money. You can argue the value may not have changed much either way and Ryan ultimately got what he could (which contrary to your post was not much). What is clear is that the money was a hurdle - the Pirates were content to wait it out until the end and gve up what they did. The real winner is Justin. Good for him and good that he had a hot august to help drive value.
  6. I think the Pirates held out knowing they had all the leverage. Had the Twins helped pay the salary this would have been done sooner and also warrented more value. Money, by all accounts but by posters here, was the factor holding off a deal. Its the only reasonable conclusion that it changed the value of the return. Now how much so is a validissue
  7. Who had him in the "lead the team in homeruns" pool?
  8. Maybe not a good one, how about a better one? I think this was the best move for all parties, hopefully Morneau comes back next year.
  9. No one knows what the negotiations were, the ignorance argument is garbage. What we know is Pirates ownership had to approve going over budget. Which very likely meant the bulk of negotiations had the Pirates Gzm working to avoid that. Which likely means had we been willing to help them avoid that dilemma the compensation MAY have been better. its the most simple, reasonable conclusion. It would've been nice if we had entertained that notion. As it is I think the Twins organization is pretty principled against doing that (their decision, that's fine) and it may have cost us value. I don't understand the insistence on ignoring the most reasonable solution. Notice - i am not, nor implying they are cheap. I don't know their reasons, but it's clear they don't entertain that option even in prudent situations.
  10. I'm pretty sure Lt Commander Data is out of work these days......
  11. Arguments from ignorance aren't much of an argument. We have a variety of clues, partial evidence, and tendencies to reach a conclusion. If you are waiting for a line by line description of metric use by team to form an opinion, it won't happen. Not to mention how easy it is to question the accuracy of public disclosures. (the forum is ripe with this in regards to comments made by Ryan on many things) So I'm not really sure what the aim is here. The preponderance of the evidence that is available (and it's sufficient) indicates we are behind many teams. Playing the ignorance argument just isn't valid.
  12. I'm glad he went to Pitt, that's the team I'm already getting behind for the playoffs. Nice to have him on there to cheer for. Also, and I could be wrong, but does moving him give us more options with resigning him next year? I thought there was some rule about resigning a player to a certain percentage of their previous salary. (Maybe that was just with extensions...) In any case, not a great return so far but that could change with the PTBNL. Let's hope it isn't cash this time too, it already looks like we dodged paying the rest of this year's bill.
  13. For the record, I've always been down on Plouffe, but I think he can become a functional bench player. He kills left handed pitching, so he could be used pretty usefully that way. But to be fair to Plouffe - our expectations were too high. His minor league numbers are not overly impressive and if you take out that several week binge he had last year his numbers are pedestrian at best. Frankly, I don't think he's that far off from what a more realistic expectation would have been. His defense and decision-making....well that's another story.
  14. The attendance issues probably won't be seen yet for two years. The Twins have been pretty successful pimping the All-Star game. It's after next season that I have some serious concerns about the team's season ticket holder levels going down dramatically unless we start winning.
  15. The Phillies also pitch in a park (true or not) that has a reputation as a bandbox and is about to undergo a major rebuild most likely. I think, on a team with a lot of immediate opportunities, in a relatively pitcher friendly park, might be a nice place to establish a career. One could make the case either way. I do know that if there is any team in the league that has some wiggle room to gamble on red flags, it's the Twins. Doesn't have to be this one necessarily, but it shouldn't deter us automatically either.
  16. Sounds like an excellent place to gain an advantage if we can be the first to do that. Could reap enormous rewards for a relatively small investment.
  17. In this case there is a good chance that cash was the best we'd get and we did this more for Carroll then us. Fine, but if there was something on the table like what we got for Butera - your other considerations should never be on the table. Prospects flame out all the time, the more ammo your farm has, the better your odds of a successful rebuild.
  18. Right, we're going to see history repeat itself. Much sooner than I think many would have predicted. I wish I could sit back and laugh at conservatives decrying this sort of military action and liberals defending it - but it's just so freaking pathetic.
  19. Sure, but it's sort of silly to combine deals to evaluate them. I could care less what they got for Carroll, I personally find this result amusing given some other things with the state of the team, but in the end no big deal. It's just confusing how the team is holding out so hard in some negotiations and not others.
  20. Now I'm just confused about what we're doing. Are we holding the line at "we have to get value" or not? I'm not too worried about the cash, I think most of us can agree this organization is frustratingly cheap since TF opened, but Carroll didn't serve any purpose. The question is - why be ok getting nothing here and then dig your heels in so hard on Morneau and Willingham when there potentially is value to be had?
  21. Thanks, that's wht I thought. Pretty good get. waiver claims aren't typically going to land hot prospects (especially with a player floundering that was claimed). Instead, targeting guys whose luster wore off might be good value and more realistic to ask for. At the end of the day, asking too much gets you nothing.
  22. With Obama's Iraq....I expect much the same as we saw previously. Only this time with the sides comically flipped in attacking/defending it. Pretty sad.
  23. Avery used to be pretty highly thought of if I remember right. its becoming a bit too consistent that are demands are "too high" with our block players. I'm all for wanting quality, but there might be a happy medium we aren't reaching right now.
  24. Well....it's potentially a positive that Mastro gets some ABs.
  25. That's a really good article, thank you for sharing. The beauty of this is that it exemplifies that you don't have to throw the baby out with the bath water. Scouting is still an integral part of their process. Character is still integral. But they've also incorporated another important aspect in order to make themselves better. The Cardinals should be the model for the Twins in every aspect of how they run their operation. First class, smart, and (perhaps the part we need to learn most) how to be innovative and flexible rather than antiquated and rigid.
