  1. I mentioned this in another thread and Shane is here as well....but if these statements boil down to nothing more than stating the obvious, then you are absolutely correct. These statements are horrifically confusing, poorly worded, full of double talk, hard not to read pessimistic ally, and they make the team sound incompetent.
  2. this is the one that needs to happen. There is plenty of position flexibility with them too.
  3. I worry this is all premature until we actually know we have another catcher. Play Pinto plenty....but no permanant move yet for Mauer.
  4. I'm still in the boat of playing him at catcher until it's obvious he can't physically handle it anymore. But during these lean years when we are awful I'd like to see them scale it back considerably to protect him for the long run.
  5. None, but he's had close ties to the organization and has a good profile to be a successful manager. Let's be honest, the Twins are not going to hire outside the organization. It just isn't how they do things.
  6. Molly is still my vote. I just want to see some damn aggressiveness on the basepaths.
  7. This has been explained many times but let me preface it with something that will help you listen. This is not a rip on the Twins. This is not being negative. Most every sports team that I'm aware of operates like a business, so it operates on revenues and deficits on a year-by-year basis. It closes the books in this way also. The Twins are no different than anyone else in that they don't take excess revenues and stockpile it for future years. They just don't do it. I'm not making any comment about the taxpayers or payroll obligations in light of that. None. I'm telling you that you're just 100% wrong to think that excess revenues will be carried forward. It's just not how they choose to operate their business, not a transgression. Hopefully snepp or one of the other guys that has the FO's qquotes on this can dig them up to once again bury this notion.
  8. Like I said, I'm not sure what the value is, but we're at the point already where we should be entertaining anything we can get for guys not part of this team's future.
  9. Native Americans are welcome to keep using it then. It doesn't make it appropriate as a team name. Since when does the right thing to do depend on the person wronged feeling wronged?
  10. It doesn't follow. They don't do it. It would make sense to, but thy aren't the only team that doesn't operate that way. It's just 100% false that they will carry money forward.
  11. Just signing one of these key IFAs would be enough for me to call the offseason a success.
  12. The Richardson trade shows a shift in thinking. I'm not sure on value but ou might be surprised.
  13. Personally I don't believe prospect hope sells season tickets. That won't be enough.
  14. Yeah, stuck in old ways. I think that's just the nature of the beast.
  15. We as in our culture. Some Native Americans are insulted and some are not, the point is not that they feel insulted but that our culture should take a close look at how we continue to portray and treat Native Americans.
  16. My point was very clearly limited to old school sports guys. Baseball, in particular, has a very rigid old school/new school divide and I think a guy like Ryan has a hard time keeping up with trends much less bucking trends and forging new ground. It's not some kind of knock on old people, it's a knock on rigidity and some of the inflexible thinking we see in baseball quite often. The Twins under Ryan have been as rigid as any. Sometimes tht pays off and sometimes it severely limits your options. I think we've crossed that bridge into "too limiting" far more than I feel comfortable with.
  17. No, but many executives have a code or system for how they do things. We see that all across sports - some guys are very aggressive. Some guys very passive. Some prefer veterans, some prospects. The point is, we've seen an awful lot of Ryan and while there may be some argument to be made that he's never been in precisely this situation (an argument I don't buy into in any way whatsoever), there is plenty of very strong supporting evidence to suggest that your "well you never know" argument isn't really accurate. We know a lot about Ryan. We know a lot about what he looks for, how he likes to build his teams, and how he feels about contracts. The evidence isn't perfect, but it's really, really powerful. You're right that you never know and we may be in for some fantastic pleasant surprises. However, I'm not a real firm believer in the idea that you can teach an old baseball guy new tricks. Or any "old school" sports guys. I think this team has to look for some fresh perspectives and that is going to become very obvious in the next few years.
  18. I think they are banking on the season ticket sales being locked in to get AS game tix. The Twins have very successfully marketed that.
  19. this. But this confusing claptrap says it all to me: there is no clear plan for how to utilize the new revenues. This team still always says they will be used to "retain", not add. Contradictions like this speak to a higher likelihood of the pessimistic predictions coming true.
  20. Excellent post. To answer your question toward the end, I believe Ryan will target his classic "innings eaters" (even if the really aren't....looking at you Kevin) to fix the problem. Even beyond Ryan's principles on FA, I think he believes simply being competent for five innings qualifies you as a good pitcher. Thankfully we are drafting players who profile as higher talents but I still think our standards for good pitching haven't evolved enough.
  21. All good points. I'm personally not advocating for mega 7 year deals, but I do think there is a happy medium that I am worried the Twins aren't considering that would still drastically improve the club. At the end of the day if you want to find reasons not to utilize FA there will always be some but that shouldn't rule out using it for significant additions.
  22. With the extra money I think we will have to go 4+. The contracts are going to be higher IMO. With our situation we can afford it 5+. Not to mention, if you wait two years to make significant adds then your contracts butt heads with the end of key arb years from Sano, Arcia, etc. There will be negatives any way you cut it.
  23. Then that makes two of us, . I don't like feeling hopeless, but I don't see any other way to feel after reading that comment. Even in context.
  24. Time to get RRRREEEEEADDDYYYYYY......or am I just secretly hoping?
  25. Let me help you understand my points, maybe I was unclear. Ryan clearly is stating not to look for any significant additions this offseason. He's also contradictory about the long-term vs. World Series move points. But my two points are separate. For one, Ryan seems to be suggesting that when this unclear time of being "World Series ready" occurs then he will make a move. But the number of circumstances that have to align for this to happen makes it dubious if it ever happens, much less that we might make a move if it does. You can be hopeful that he means what he says about "World Series ready", but there are very legitimate reasons to doubt this scenario ever happens. My point you quoted and then conflated with this one is my personal viewpoint. I keep a fool's hope that we'll eventually do something, but the logical part of me says that Ryan has very strong principles about what he will and will not do in regards to contracts. I think those principles are very firm and will not budge even in some future scenario where the rubber meets the road.
