  1. That quote and what you posted absolutely destroys all the hope Nick Nelson tries to sell in this article. It demolishes any chance we will see significant improvement on this roster via FA this offseason. Miller is suggesting we won't see significant steps forward in 2014 either - thus damning and killing optimism for next year seems mighty fitting. Nothing about what you posted changes that. The offseason is an awfully difficult time to tell if you are WS caliber. Hell, some teams don't even know they're WS caliber in July much less January. Waiting for the right offseason, with the right available players, with the right amount of available money, with the right level of talent to contend - is a recipe for doing nothing. There is nothing insulting about that, just realistic.
  2. I wouldn't go so far as to say contradicted - the contradiction here is in his statements about "longterm" and the idea that you'd add when "looking at the World Series". I think, to be fair to Ryan here, he's talking about using FA to go from non-contender to contender. I think we all agree FA isn't going to be effective for that. We're all talking about complements, so this is a pretty classic Twins move to paint the question in the extreme rather than a more sensible interpretation. No one wants them to build a WS contender out of FA, but if you are waiting for that magic moment to add a FA - I worry about that mentality. If 2015 or 2016 are legit targets to start contending, there is no reason not to add talent now. It would be foolish not to build a team in anticipation of those players developing well, not wait until you see the results. To me this just sounds like the same Ryan refrain. They will aggressively pursue players insofar as they are willing to accept contracts less than 4 years in length and the dollar cap he feels comfortable with. Then, he will bow out as soon as the price tag gets past his very meager standards for acceptable length and total dollars - a totally forseeable and preventable problem.
  3. I think today makes the team seriously consider trading Allen, Williams, Gerhart, and others for draft picks next year.
  4. He was asked a specific question and he gave a very specific answer. He even went farther than he needed to. He could've said "We'll use FA in the way we feel best to rebuild this club" or "We don't think in the near term that FA is an answer to helping turn this team around" or something else. To so flatly assert that it won't be used now OR in the long-term is far more than he needed to provide. I don't read that as they will do nothing, but as they will do nothing significant t augment the rebuild. Again, it's an incredibly damning quote for any of us that were hopeful of a more aggressive approach to adding talent without trading.
  5. Except he just said he won't. Pretty clearly and without much wiggle room to spin it otherwise. A quote like this is as clear and as concise as you will ever hear from an executive of a sports team and it completely undercuts any optimism about the offseason. To suggest otherwise is a really disingenuous re-reading of the statement he made.
  6. That's as damning a quote as I could have imagined. It isn't strategic media fodder, it isn't just next year but "long term", and it basically rules out all significant non-trade/draft options. Ouch....that should kill any lingering optimism by anyone rational. This is, as I've been saying for awhile, a matter of principle for Ryan. Never about timing.
  7. Well, it sure doesn't fit for us anymore.
  8. The very fact we continue to openly mock a culture and religion we all but destroyed speaks to the contrary. We're talking about a professional sports team, based in our nation's capital, in a league that receives significant government support and protections, not some individual artist. The comparison is pretty ridiculous.
  9. How about where we stop cartoonishly mocking a culture and religion by making them our sports mascots for starters? You want to throw the Irish in that...fine by me. There are obvious differences (like, we didn't slaughter them out of greed and then put them in a corner somewhere so we could try and more easily forget we slaughtered them. Minor difference I'm sure you'd contend), but if that's what it takes. Fine by me. As for the rest, I would argue the very notion we have to "battle" this, is an indictment in and of itself. One of our biggest problems is a disregard for how we mistreat others if even unconsciously. Small battles like this can go a long way, especially when they shouldn't be a battle at all.
  10. I never suggested these nicknames destroyed the culture, it would be a ridiculous suggestion. (almost as ridiculous as your use of it as a scarecrow) Short of genocide I'm not sure we can do that. This is more akin to pissing on the grave. What you don't seem to understand is that these nicknames DO demean a groups culture and religion. We are mocking it, stereotyping it, and cartoonishly mimicking it. We're just so accustomed to demeaning them that we can't even recognize it when we do it.
  11. I missed two great ones! I bet all the PC complaining right wingers would line up to support, in principle, some group calling their team the Fiddling Fiars or Pedo Priests and similarly mocking and stereotyping a whole group of people for their own entertainment.
  12. This shouldn't be that surprising, many here were chastised for suggesting the preseason predictions of an above average offense were unrealistically optimistic. Its been that way all year.
  13. We already destroyed their culture, this is just insult to injury. But you're right, I'm sure if it was the Mississippi Uppity Negroes or the Wisconsin Mass Murderin Honkies you'd also be complaining about political correctness shutting those names down too. This is just subtle racism at work and you're too busy looking to feel insulted by it that you don't see the deeply rooted message this sends. It doesn't even have to bother someone else for it to bother some of us thtwe are still stuck in demeaning a people that already had so much taken from them.
  14. Well yeah, but last I checked no one is named the Florida State Crackers. The issue here is thinking a race of people make for good cartoonish mascots. I despise political correctness, but that isn't even remotely the issue here. It's latent sentiments of racial superiority or indifference for cultural destruction manifesting as team nicknames.
  15. I'll say what many will probably think - that's a damn fine second post sir. Even if Delmon Young's defense and "serviceable" belong together like oil and water.
  16. Well, for one - destroying September pitching is hardly proof positive. Parmelee and hundreds of others have done that and fell on their face in a full season. He's got a better track record and projects better, but so does Hermann defensively. As for Doumit, I'd love to let him play just to regain value, but the Twins seem incapable or unwilling to let those players leave via trade. They seem more inclined to extend their deals or let them ride out the season. I just have zero confidence in the Twins ability to utilize that option - so I'd rather he just be gone.
  17. I don't think you can just learn to be less clumsy and awkward fielding. I have no problem continuing to run him out there now, but to the point of the thread about predicting the future....I hope once more talent arrives it pushes him to a position morebefitting his skillset.
  18. I tend to agree. For example, I'd sooner consider trading him than Rosario. But the truth is, this team's best chance to contend will still be with Mauer at catcher for the bulk of his at-bats. I'm not opposed to Arcia being in the outfield, I just expect Delmon Young-like defense out of him. I, for one, am quite happy to be done with that. Even if Willingham is only marginally better.
  19. A fair point. But if you have a spot (and the Twins look to have an open DH spot long term) - I think we'll have far, far better fielders to throw out there long term. Frankly, I think Kubel is/was a superior fielder to Arcia.
  20. Virtually everything went wrong. We got clarity, but not any of the kind we could have hoped for.
  21. This guy just baffles me. How can you have his repetoire and his minor league success and still be this awful? I almost want to keep giving him chances just because I don't get why he sucks.
  22. I have a rule that I think pretty well when it comes to defense. Bad defensive players and great defensive players are easy to spot. Their skills (or complete lack of them) don't take a lot of analysis to see. Arcia, from everything I've seen, is a bad defensive player. He looks like Delmon Young out there in how he takes routes and approaches fly balls. Some guys just aren't naturals and I (and this is just my opinion) can see that already with him. Doesn't take anything away from how big of an impact player I believe he will be, however.
  23. I predict he'll continue to develop into a legitimate middle of the order bat. I also predict his god-awful defense will rightly relegate him to DH most of the time.
  24. There are many more threads about Pelfrey, Correia, and others. A half dozen threads about one of the team's biggest disappointments does not speak to your point. In fact, it speaks contrary to it. I'm surprised there isn't more frustration with his erratic waste of a season. As to what I quoted - there is no "objective" reason for anyone to feel anything about Plouffe. You included. There is no magic formula that objectively proves an opinion and that insinuation, I think, is part of why you are (as you said) confused by this.
